15 Things Rabbits Hate the Most

  • In this video, we’ll discuss the top 15 things that rabbits hate and you should avoid.
    High Temperatures
Rabbits prefer temperatures of about 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit. And temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit are hazardous to domesticated bunnies.
In fact, rabbits have no sweat glands. They can exhaust excess heat only through their long ears. Make sure to construct a hutch to keep your bunny shaded during the heat of the day.
    Certain Smells
Rabbits are prey animals. In order to survive, they’ve had to develop an incredibly keen sense of smell to know when a predator is in the area. The smell of blood or urine scares them away because they may think a predator is in the area. Bunnies also can’t tolerate the smell of crushed red peppers, ammonia, vinegar, and garlic.
    Being lonely
If you see a bunny in the wild, it’s unlikely to be alone. Rabbits are very social animals who need constant companionship. They travel in pairs and large groups, protecting each other from predators.
    Having nowhere to hide
It is important for bunnies to have a safe place to hide when they feel threatened or get spooked. Having nowhere to take cover, will make your bunny scared, stressed and anxious.
    Socializing with predators
Outdoor rabbits face many dangers from predators. You may think it’s cute to introduce your bunny to cats or dogs, but these are predatory animals by nature and can be very frightening for your rabbit. Surprisingly enough, rabbits can die simply from the stress of hearing or smelling a predator in the area - even if they aren't attacked.
    Loud Noises
Loud noises are stressful for your rabbit because they have much more sensitive hearing than humans.
The sound of fireworks, thunder, loud music, horror movies, loud vehicles, slamming doors, shouting or your vacuum cleaner can be terrifying for your rabbit.
    Washing them
Rabbits are very clean animals and they almost never need a bath. Bathing your rabbit can even be harmful because they may panic and fracture their spine or a limb if they thrash around
    Damp, stale dusty hay
It’s important to give your rabbit high quality hay. It needs to smell nice and be dust free. Fresh and greenish hay is better than brown hay. Remember, hay is the most important part of a rabbit's diet as it provides the fiber necessary to keep their digestive systems healthy. Make sure to give your bunny additional hay types like Timothy and grass hays.
Rabbits should have a daily diet of mostly hay, a smaller amount of fresh vegetables, and a limited number of pellets.
    Small spaces
Rabbits are social, intelligent, and highly curious animals who need to be able to explore their surroundings. In the wild, they're incredibly active, and love to run and jump.
Keeping your rabbit in tiny cages is unkind and can cause a range of health problems such as obesity, depression
    Roughhousing
Children are unpredictable and impulsive. They can sometimes agitate or frighten a rabbit.
Young children should be introduced to bunnies in a calm and peaceful manner, carefully letting the bunny gets close to them at the rabbit’s own will.
    Riding in a car
Rabbits hate car rides because a car is an unfamiliar environment, filled with strange noises and weird smells. And remember, bunnies hate being outside of their known environment. When they are in a moving vehicle, they get anxious and even tremble with small, fast tremors.
    Being picked up
Bunnies are very skittish animals and it takes a while for most rabbits to trust their human. That doesn't mean they don’t like you. It’s just that they are prey animals and they don't know if you are going to eat them or not! Remember to be patient and let your rabbit come to you first. If they sniff or nudge you with their nose, do not move away.
    Petting their behind
Rabbits don’t like being touched on their back, stomach or tail. This is because they feel they are being preyed upon from behind.
Rabbits tend to love their ears, nose and cheeks to be stroked.
A home full of urine and droppings
Rabbits are very clean animals and they appreciate a clean, nice home. Dirty smelly homes will depress your pet and will attract flies.
    Dressing your rabbit
    rabbit hate being dresses up
    Chasing After Them
Although chasing after your rabbit may seem all fun and games from your perspective, it can be devastating for your rabbit.
When chased around, rabbits get frightened and their heart rate could skyrocket.
    A high traffic environment
Rabbits can get anxious and startled if they are kept in a high traffic part of your house. Like where many people and young children are constantly walking around. It’s important to avoid suddenly reaching out and touching your pet. A rabbit that doesn’t feel safe in their home environment will be in constant fear and anxiety.
    Belly Rubs
A bunny’s stomach is a very sensitive part of their body. rabbits hate being touched on their belly area.

I had a pet rabbit (a “meat” rabbit I got from a farm) he followed me everywhere, would nip me only when I stopped petting him. (Bossy) he played out in the yard all day everyday (no fence) with my dog and six cats. I would call him in in eve by clicking my tongue and he’d come running inside house into his hut. He wandered into neighbors yard and they took him as their pet. They had very young children who grew to love him, and by the time I found out who had him, I was glad he hadn’t fallen prey to a hawk or fox.. and just let the young children keep the rabbit. It was a great pet.

We once let our rabbit out outside on a leash in the big garden behind this apartment. One son held the leash. Other son started to bark. Rabbit ran off into the bushes and he couldn't keep the leash. Then he ran around so fast. We couldn't get as fast. Horrible. I thought we'd never see him back. And then he just sat down. I won. And my other son could pixk him up. I read on internet that he just wanted to show off how fast he was. That was the first and last time we took him out.

Sometimes bunnies will play like that, they will steal something and run off with it. :) but you will need to "chase" them in the most non-threatening way ever. Pay close attention to the chasing you back though, that can very often be a sign of aggression and that your bun is telling you to bugger off :) clear signs are flat ears, a charge, grunt and or a raised tail. Other than that, they love to steal things for the fun of it :)

I personally think that mostly all of these are true except the being rouched on their back part, my rabbit loves when i pet her back, and she teally enjoys it and shows no sign of feeling uncomfortable! Of course i am not any animal expert, but i know that most rabbits do like beibg touched and patted on their back, because they feel cozy that way and my bunny even fell asleep once as i was doing that! So i don't know about any other rabbits, but I've had an experience with living with 3 rabbits and every single one of them loves to be patted on their back and cuddles there too!

Honestly I think all of this depends on the bunny personality. My male 2 year old Holland lop free roams and he poops a lot even though he uses his litter box. I use a vacuum cleaner to clean up his poop and he doesn’t mind the sound of the vacuum cleaner at all. My bunny is very playful and binkys a lot so I think all of this depends on the bunny

While the note of rabbits' preference being in pairs is generally true, they are fiercely hierarchal and territorial. I had two bunnies, bonded brothers, but when one of them lost his eyesight (the dominate) the other attacked him to gain dominance. Bunnies fight to the death. It's important if you're bringing another rabbit into a single rabbit home to work to bond them, and to closely monitor them, especially if they're young and two males.
As with any animal, getting another as a "companion" because they are a social species carries a huge caveat. You have to work hard to bond them. Would you rather be alone or trapped with your worst enemy?

i got my bunny back in september. prior to that i did 2-3 months of research to make sure i got the right type of cage for him (we live in a flat so he is an indoor bunny, however we do have a balcony and he plays out their when its warm enough), and made sure i knew everything i needed to know. he is honestly the happiest little rabbit ive ever met. i do have a cat but they get on really really well. we got thumper when he was 11 weeks old and straight away slowly introduced him to my cat. my cat is a very laid back cat anyway, she sleeps most of the day so she doesnt really bother him. when doing my research i found if either of them were going to attack the other it would more likely be Thumper because he’s defending his territory. we have never had any problems with him hes very chilled, loves to sleep on top of his little house thats in his cage, he loves strawberries, he loves tickles on his head and behind his ears and he loves running around when we let him out his cage. he’s completely litter trained and im so proud of him. i had a lot of worry and doubt about getting a rabbit because of all the kind of problems in this video but theyre surprisingly easy to deal with/avoid. or if you have a rabbit from a young age it isnt difficult to help them get used to these kind of things. they are extremely smart animals. my rabbit knows his name, he comes to me when i call him and he follows me everywhere. it was his first christmas this year and he got absolutely spoiled with all his favourite treats. ive decided that with the cardboard boxes left over from christmas that im going to build him a house to play in when he isnt in his cage. this video helped to make me aware of things before getting my rabbit. please keep all of these things in mind if youre planning on getting a rabbit💗🐰xo (sorry for the long story) x

Reading this definitely helped me relax a bit over getting a rabbit. Graduating college and wanting to move out into an apartment, on top of dealing with a lot of emotional things from last year, made me want a pet and a rabbit at that since it has the lifespan I want while being the size I’d prefer and quieter than a dog or cat but also something to interact with. I did research and wrote extensive notes, felt confident but watching some videos and seeing everyone say “rabbits are very difficult to have as pets” reeeeeaaally knocks that confidence down a notch. I know they’re not super low maintenance animals but reading your experiences with your rabbit helped me.

Its a good list. Its not necessarily true though that they are afraid of dogs. Our rescue rabbit Crazy Alice isnt bothered by the house dogs at all... in fact she would bow up on the Jack Russell back when he was still with us, and chase him away if he happened to get near. Total "Stand Your Ground". And we have a much larger dog that is mostly Pit Bull, another rescue, who is fascinated by her and follows her around everywhere watching her and just staring. She moves around him, through his legs, rubs up against him, no problem.

Thank you for this educational video! We need to bring more attention to caring for bunnies, as many people are still keeping them in poor conditions or don't understand their body language.

The worst are all the videos of people trying to bathe them, and thinking it's ok because the rabbit freezes. For some reason people will argue that the rabbit doesn't mind the bath instead of recognizing it's scared out of its mind. 😭

    • @CarlyDeFoxx
      @CarlyDeFoxx ปีที่แล้ว

@@shellieperreault6262 I agree! Before I got my first bunbun I researched their body language so I could understand what they like and what annoys them! And I was 7 yo... I wish more people would do research before getting the pet they want, they often don't realize that their actions harm their little ones :(

My rabbit plays chase with me; we go back and forth and he binkies around then comes back for cuddles. He's a special child for sure! He has a hutch indoors and supervised running around time, and is generally spoiled rotten . Moose also loves all the touching and demands it.

Depends on the household. My rabbit and cat get along great, but my rabbit was very small when they were introduced. My rabbit gets about 3-5 hrs of free house time so hes def part of the family. Mine doesnt mind being picked up and doesnt mind butt scratches (but he prefers head scratchies). But ive also had my bun since he was about 3-4 weeks old and didnt buy from a pet store.

It doesn't specifically state that it can send them into shock and kill them which is the most important part. Without FULLY accurate information how are people meant to take care of their pets? I will not delete my comment because it is important and still stands.

Nevermind the fact that if they do bathe a rabbit, NEVER put water near their ears or face and be super careful when drying them cause a hair dryer could burn them and if not dried they can die of hypothermia

This video is great! I would add one more thing: they hate being flipped over on their back. This not only annoies or frighten them, but can cause them to panic or seriously injure their fragile spines (possibly fatally) as they struggle to turn theirselves on the other side again.

This is a very accurate video! Though I as a rabbit owner can say that after years of living with your bunny, it starts to trust you if you give it the chance to, and will be fine with you petting its back, vacuuming, picking it up once in a while etc. Nowadays my bunny stretches out her back legs and relaxes completely when I pet her back/bum, but she hated it when I first got her. Trust, respect and patience is everything with a bunny!

  • @Gacha_Ed
    @Gacha_Ed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

06:37 They meant not to do it when your bun don't expect it.
Some rabbits can enjoy it but if your bunny is facing backwards and doesn't know you're there then you suddenly touch it behind or pull their tail they'll be frightened. While if they know you're there and you start the stroking from the head or let them see your had getting closer to them first then they'll expect it and be more/completely comfortable.

many of these things are potentially lethal--bathing, high temperatures, moldy/dirty hay, even the stress of being chased could all kill a rabbit. kinda weird to frame them as things rabbits "hate" as if they were mere preferences.

My bunny hates the smell of ANY meat cooking. She lives in a large pen in the living room so whenever we cook, she hides away until the smell goes away. I just leave her alone during this time or else she gets scared and runs from us (the only time she’s afraid of us)
Also when it comes to stuff like the vacuum, get them used to it when they’re babies!!! My bunny used to be terrified but now she doesn’t mind it at all and will even sploot next to me while I vacuum
