Winter Dreams grew from the 'Farewell' pas de deux, which MacMillan created to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's 90th birthday. The full ballet, created for The Royal Ballet, had its premiere in 1991. It is inspired by Chekhov's play The Three Sisters but is not a narrative portrayal of the whole story. Instead, MacMillan delves into the inner lives of the characters and displays their hidden thoughts and feelings through a series of solos, pas de deux and ensembles.
Winter Dreams ranges in style from the lyrical, yearning pas de deux for Masha and Vershinin, to the folk dances performed by the local soldiers, and MacMillan's characteristically dramatic style, with every movement full of human emotion, is evident throughout. This is matched with Tchaikovsky's music, arranged by Philip Gammon, and traditional music for balalaikas, and set within the period, provincial atmosphere of Peter Farmer's designs.

Not gonna lie, whenever I watch these two dancing together, for the first 5 minutes I'm constantly thinking, "They used to be married! This is so weird!" But they're so talented and such incredible dancers (and professional) that you soon forget and just enjoy the moment. It's such an interesting/unusual dynamic, and I have a million questions I wish I could ask, but obviously their relationship/friendship is no one's business but theirs! I don't want Nela to ever retire!!!

Thiago is adorable!! I met him several years ago and he was so humble and charming.
They were actually married and were such a gorgeous couple. Sadly they splited up a couple of years ago and it is so amazing to see them still working together and getting along like two real professionals

Nela is art, perfection, technique, subtlety, kindness, sweetness, strength, passion, dance, glamor, brightness, delicacy, modesty, genuineness, divism, desire in one person on and off stage
I love watching these tremendous artists both dance from their souls and also take creative direction so beautifully. They don’t let their egos get in the way of producing the most complete performance possible. Marianela is such an incredibly natural actress and dancer, when I watch her I see her movement naturally develop, it never looks forced or posed she is just so fluid

This choreography is so beautiful with many touches I've never seen. This video doesnt tell what they are dancing. Is it McMillan? I've been astonished by the beauty of his dances before. Guess I'm a fan! (My bad, push a few buttons girl. Yes. Its McMillan. Lol) God, her jumps!

'en point' and would spin on one toe, she would release violent farts, even heard over the orchestra. She would be in tears, but the public would be hysterically laughing. So sad and awful for her.

Idk if this is even a question, but why does the ballerina have to work 100x times harder than the ballerino in every single pas de deux. They jus t be like: booh hoo im lifting u so u can shine better than me
"Ballet is Woman." --George Balanchine. I think women's bodies are so much more flexible than men's that they can do more amazing things, though I do love to see men jump and pirouette.
