Lavaredo by UTMB // The Race That Broke Me

- The Lavaredo Ultra Trail is one of the most iconic ultra races in the world, set in the stunning Dolomites of Italy. With 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) and over 5,800 meters (19,000 feet) of elevation gain, this race is a true test of endurance and willpower. The course takes runners through breathtaking landscapes, including the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and features rugged trails, steep climbs, and technical descents.
This race was different from my usual experiences, and I didn't find the joy I normally feel while running ultras. It's been a tough journey, but I'm taking the lessons learned to come back stronger in future races.
Thanks for joining me on this journey, and stay tuned for more adventures!

Thank you Marcus for the wonderful scenery video and recognition. Next time (if ever happens again) just lay down, relax and wait for me and then we can search together for a happy thoughts...The key is, as I mentioned, to focus (completely) as much as you can on something else when on that (bed) state, because if you don't and you still focused on the state you are, that state remains and even gets worse as you experienced. So now you have experience and next time you won't go from the beginning but from that experience. See you at Kullamannen, if not before.
I will remember that. Thanks Ivi for the company. See you at Kullamannen
@@MarcusKjellberg Jeff Pelletier may inspired me to try out trail running & start dreaming about UTMB, but you, Marcus, were the one that made me sign up for Kullamannen 100k race (still not ready for the 100M challenge). I am extremely happy to find out that I will run somewhere nearby you and Ivi this November as you both are legends. Thanks for the content you create!
@@EimantasMiksys that is great to hear. Hope to see you there!
Marcus, you're such a hero! Thanks so much for the stunning footage and look into your journey, both physical and emotional. And I really appreciate that you use such mellow and atmospheric music in your videos, such a welcome change after having my ears blasted off in other running vlogs! Can't wait to run the 120km distance in 2025.
Thanks 🙏I was lucky in the lottery so I will be back next year. See you there 🤩
Thank you so much Markus. You give inspiration and encouragement to us all. It’s a privilege to watch your films.
Thanks 🙏 Great to hear. That means a lot to me 🤩
Congrats for the race and the video you've made! It tells a pretty incredible story and being there at this race myself, I can say you captured the beauty of this race and those mountains!
Regarding your DNF, congrats for doing 97 km up to that checkpoint, that no easy feat to do while having stomach issue! What happened do you, happened to my as well starting exactly where your problems started, at Cimabanche and struggled up to Col Gallina, where you have DNF. I was about to quit at the same checkpoint, I was 95% sure I wanted to quit, but luckily, my friend who helped as a support crew pushed me to eat a hot sandwich, a fresh Coke and a bottle of sparking water from the cabin nearby. And a trip to toilet helped a lot. Otherwise I would've DNF, 100%
Again, congratulations for your awesome effort to run 97 km, and find the energy to film it and speak to the camera as well. It's not easy at all!
Congratulations and well done to turn it around 💪
Ivi Hrastovec, the legend of Slovenia trial run scene, when he does not run barefoot he usually wins :), really great video. All the best in the future.
It was a pleasure to meet Ivi again 👍
Love your videos Marcus. You've inspired me so much on my trail running journey. I have a long way to go and I still can't fathom accomplishing the races you do. Don't worry about that DNF you will come back strong and accomplish your next goal! Keep up the great content and motivating us!
Thanks a lot. Really appreciate your comment. That means a lot to me if I can share my experience and inspire 🤩
come back stronger marcus...going home safe and sound is the ultimate finish. hope to see your next great trail running videos
New race this weekend 💪
Amazing views and tough race. Congrats for giving it a shot!
I will be back for more 💪
Thank you for the quick reply Marcus! You are a huge inspiration!
🤩🙏
That bare foot guy gets around!!!!
Another awesome video!
I have this in my 2026 calendar (UTS for 2025) and this has absolutely made me commit!
Great to hear. Great race 👌
Marcus, you try hard, man of steel. To tell the truth, it was incredibile to see you back in race, Lazarus from the grave, a sort of. Resilient is your second name. Looking your great video, I think you struggled so hard for 12 hours or more. Question: no trouble with glycemia? That was great. You wasn't alle to assume food for a day. Good luck and best eishes for next races. I hope to see you in Itsly next year. Take care.
I managed my diabetes ok but was worried about it. Not great to manage a low blood sugar when you can not eat sugar 🤩
Hey Marcus, thank you for another great video. It's very useful to see not only when things go to plan, but when you are faced with the unexpected. Great job toughing it out and getting to the point you got
Thanks. Now I’m hungry for more
You gave it all you had! Sometimes it is just not possible to finish anyway. Well fought Marcus!! Se you!
Yes I fought hard actually
I feel you, brother. I had to DNF in UTMB at Champex Lac. It sucks, but those are still great memories. I think you made the right decision to stop. It can get very serious quickly. Thanks again for the wonderful video and story!
DNF sucks but it does happen to everyone. Part of the game I guess. Thanks for watching 🙏
@@MarcusKjellberg that's right. I've learned some valuable lessons from my DNFs :)
Those views were just spectacular! A shame that you felt so bad you weren't fully able to appreciate them at the time. You really soldiered on to the bitter end and gave it your all. Your wife is a tough cookie who got you back up that hill again, my woman would be worried sick if I called her in the state you were in.
Next time 💪
nice pov docu :) Ivan is so cool. I followed him for some minutes photographing him when he won Ohrid Ultra Trail last year. his speed was so crazy on that terrain there.
Ivi is a superman 💪
This looked like a psychedelic trip, kudos to you for the good video, as well for your bright spirit!
Thanks 🙏
Well done Marcus! I was routing for you even though I knew the result! Great video again.
Thanks 🤩
another legendary video man
Thanks 🙏
Well done filming this race despite the GI issues! Such a shame to have such a lovely day during such an amazing race. Well, I had the same race evolution during the UTMB last year so I do understand the frustration. Fortunately I managed to enjoy both my Lavaredo races, the last one in 2022. My advice.. let's do this again m8! 😄🤙
100%. I will be back 🤘
Great video! Would love to do Lavaredo one year. Sorry to see you struggle with stomach issues, but it can happen to the best. Good luck with the next race.
Thanks a lot 🙏
You have my respect, this happened to me this year too, exactly the same story. As the saying goes, sometimes you are the dog and sometimes you are the tree. But things like that only make you stronger.
My wife tells me I’m the tree 🌴😁
@@MarcusKjellberg 🤣😂👍
it is a hard decision! Respect!🙏💪❤️
It is. Thanks 🙏
I DNFed at same check point due to altitude sickness, it is a wild ride, and I learned that I cannot come day before the race and expect to be acclimatized :-D
Bettet luck next time 👍
Great video. Thx for sharing! Sorry for DNF, but you gave it 2 solid GOs. I enjoy my comfort zones😂
I love my comfort zone as well 🤩
Be proud. You tried. Most don’t. ❤
I will be back and try again 👍
Hi Marcus, great video! Could you please tell us what camera area you using to shoot these great videos? Thank you, Jan
I'm using an Insta360 X4 camera
Thanks for another great video! Sorry you had a bad race. Do you know what might have caused it? Would you make any changes for the next race? I had a similar experience for the first time running the PDA in Vielha last week - luckily I could just grind it out to the finish, but it was certainly uncomfortable.
It was some stomach bug for sure. Lasted for a few more days. Only lessons learnt is not to stop in the medical tent ⛺️
Ivi Hrastovec 🦶
Hello Marcus, which camera do you use?
Keep up with the videos, it’s good to see the point of view of a not elite athlete, it’s a different race.
I used the Insta360 x4. Thanks for watching 🙏
bravo for trying so hard - you made the best decision to not continue in the state you were in. maybe next year 😊
See you next year. Love to come back 👍
0:21 that guy bare foot OMG
Amazing
So you can use trekking poles but not shoes?
Poles are optional but shoes are mandatory. However the rules does not say that you have to wear the shoes.
Gött köttat ändå! När man hamnar i tältet finns det inte mycket kvar att göra. Vilket är loppet om två veckor?
GAX den 20:e juli
How would you say it ranks as far as views compared to other ultras?
This is probably the most beautiful race I have ever seen
@@MarcusKjellberg yeah I was wondering because I don’t do ultras , but I was hiking near you when this race happened in the Dolomites , the beauty is stunning , didn’t realize how much of a hikers paradise it is , hike in the alps often but there is something about the lower altitude and accessibility in the Dolomites… cool thx for confirming maybe one day I try to run it !
The one climb for you all near Cinque Torri is SO intense , I saw the faces of racers , … wow
I’ve been lucky enough to have been able to get my stomach back under control with ginger chews and/or gu roctane electrolytes pills when it has turned. But I hardly have the race pedigree you have. Just has been my limited experience.
I might try that 👍
Dnf?
Yes
Sorry for the illness. As a YT comment section "expert" it seems like you and others got Salmonella..... 1:23?
Maybe. It did stay for a few days and my wife got it as well 🤢
DNF=Out of confort zone FINISHER=Confort zone ????
That is not what I meant. If you never DNF you might not test the limits and if you test your limits you will at some point also reach your limit which results in a DNF. In this race the plan was to enjoy and stay in the comfort zone but I failed
I think your main problem was dehydration.. and toomuch calculating and focusing on time.. you should try to enjoy from start, and when you stomach started to hurt, you'd have to have some coca cola asap, and if it wouldn't be better, should try to throwup, then sleep for half an hour (to rest your stomach) and then eat some real food.. and continue just to enjoy
(I'm usually a support at 100 milers to friends - I was even Ivi's few times (when he did some preety nice race records), you should believe me. 😊😉)
This time I was not prepared for a battle. I was just there to enjoy. I tried many things to fix the stomach. It lasted for a week so not the regular problem this time. Ivi is great 👍
Great video! Also, 616 is the number of the beast! 😅 See here en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_beast
Ah. Did not know that 😁
