You Need to Be Watching Ayo Dosunmu: The Biggest Steal of the 2021 NBA Draft

  • The Chicago Bulls selected Ayo Dosunmu with the 38th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Ayo Dosunmu has stepped up in a big way for the Bulls, being one of the best rookies in the league since becoming a starter. Dosunmu has a lot more to his game than you might've seen just yet, but he looks like he could be a perfect complementary piece alongside Zach Lavine, DeMar DeRozan, and Lonzo Ball.
    In this video, I’m going to cover what Ayo Dosunmu brings to the table for this Bulls team, and at the end I’m going to talk about how he is going to play a bigger role than people think in the Bulls quest to win a championship around Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan. Ayo may not be a big star now, but he has more potential than people realize.

    About halfway through the video, I said “he’s not going to be putting up double digit assists anytime” soon. Of course, he goes and drops 11 assists. I should clarify I meant that I don’t think he’s going to be averaging double digit assists anytime soon, but even now I’m start to reconsider that position. Either way, he’s been awesome!

    Something that stood out to me was the fact that DeRozen drove the 2.5 hours through corn fields with him, down to Champaign, to be there with him when the Illini raised his jersey to the rafters. That speaks to the respect he's already earned. Maybe it speaks to DeRozen, too, but that just seems like something most 2nd rounders aren't seeing from their star teammates.

      Derozan is the glue. He's not "bigger than the game". He supports everybody and that makes everybody play harder. Would Pippen have been as good if he had not played with Jordan? Ayo's got great fundamentals but I don't think his ascent is as quick without Derozan.

    Ayo's was drafted in the right situation at the right time. Can't be sure Ayo would be this good if he didn't have Zach, Zo, DeMar, Javonte Green and Alex Caruso to learn from, but Billy Donovan's guard heavy lineups allows Ayo to expand his game beyond 1 position. Once he has a full offseason to develop a NBA body, the skies the limit for him.

    At Illinois, Ayo shot lights out from the same spots on the floor in his midrange game that we see with the Bulls. It is a big part of his game. Also, he was coached hard at Illinois, which he wanted, and now is coached hard by Donovan. Ayo drinks up coaching, like a thirsty man in the desert drinks water. Who knows where his ceiling will be?

  • @josepedroza3400
    @josepedroza3400 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    Duhon out of Duke was a 38 pick by the Bulls and had a 10 year career as a rotational player. I believe Ayo has a higher ceiling, mainly because of his 6-5 frame and reported 7 foot wingspan. What Ayo does to make the team better is a huge intangible. He is a top 8 rookie imho when you consider playmaking, defense and winning.

    what stands out is his work ethic, idk if it’s just me I haven’t seen people talk about this but I feel he’s gained a lot more size, he’s looks way more filled out since he declared for the draft. even since the summer league, looks like he put in a lot of time in the weight room.

    To us Illini fans, this is no surprise. He's a smart kid, and a hard worker.

      Got to see him play quite a bit at college level, and for the life of me can't understand how he was taken after 37 other guys. I think part of it is the modern NBA's obsession with getting the youngest guys possible, but man. Just don't know what else you could want in a player
      He's so smooth when he scores getting to the basket or in the mid-range. 3pt shot could use some work, but is already good enough it needs to be respected. He's clutch and has no fear trying to score or make a play if he needs to. And he also has no ego/issue deferring to a teammate. He's got handles, above-average passing ability, he's a long, smart, gritty defender. Always hustles, seems to work really hard...
      I just don't get it lol, but good for the Bulls. I don't know if he'll ever be a "star" or not, but I'd bet the farm he'll have a longer career than most guys in his draft class because his floor is so high

    I think his ceiling could be a Jrue Holiday if he continues to improve.

    Imo hes gonna soon play better than the higher drafted rookies, 1. hes in Bulls where they play winning type basketball. 2. he has lots of good hardworking vets there that can teach him a lot. Surely a player to watch out for.

    I think everything happens for a reason and he doesn’t give a fuck that he was a second round pick and instead is very happy he is on the bulls. Specifically, from the likes of how he is playing next contract man is making bread.
