🖤 I'm so glad I googled him! I was watching Amen and just felt the urge to look up his history. I smiled all the way through this. I wish I had had the opportunity to meet him in person.
I don't remember the exact year, but it was in 1985, 86, or 87. I was singing in a church choir, and we memorized five of Jester Hairston's compositions. If memory serves, they were: Amen, Mary's Boy Child, Hold On, Elijah Rock, and Oh, Rocka My Soul. On a following Saturday, Jester came and rehearsed us for most of the day, and on Sunday, we sang these pieces under Jester Hairston's direction. It was a highlight of my life, and I will never forget the experience nor Jester Hairston. What an amazing man!
I've been watching Amen tv series daily for about a couple of months now and I had no idea about his life, gifts or talents. But oh my goodness, he was a STAR ✨ I wish I had the opportunity to meet him on this side ❤ I seen a little about Clifton Davis but not enough about Jester Hairston. I love the talent show episode that the choir sings "fare ye well" I watch it at least a couple times when it plays in the line up, I noticed he seemed to really enjoy it and had such joy, now I know why. I also love him as the straight man in Amen, he was quite gifted and talented in several areas, what a treasure he is ❤❤ even though I didn't know him personally I seem to miss him none the less. Rest in power Jester ❤
So glad to see this documentary, thank you! I ran into it while trying to learn about Jester Hairston, after seeing an old Johnny Carson episode aired first on October 15, 1987, where Hairston was a guest. Hairston (b. July 1901) looked great, though he had recently recovered from a very bad heart attack. (Other guests were Tim Conway and Kevin Rooney.) - CHDH alumna :)
My mother maiden name was Hairston so I'm guessing I'm a direct descendant of the Hairston clan. I always wondered where my mother got her voice from because my grandmother couldn't sing lol.

Same here. I was watching reruns of Amen, and became curious.
Me googling him led me here as well! I knew he had a rich and impressive career. However, this documentary solidifies it.
He brought beauty, love, and happiness to a world in desperate need of all three. Rest his precious soul in the joy of the Lord.
