  • The Aer Duffle Pack 3 is a solidly-build, functional and well thought out bag that marries work/EDC functionality with a duffle-style opening and main compartment that works great for the gym or carrying bulkier items.
    00:00 - Introduction
    02:45 - Who it's for/not for
    05:19 - Exterior design
    08:55 - Exterior Pocketing
    14:24 - Shoulder/carry straps
    20:07 - Laptop/EDC compartment
    25:04 - Main compartment
    29:05 - Show Pouch
    32:55 - Other bags to consider
    The third iteration of Aer's long-running duffle pack, the Duffle Pack V3's main claim to fame is that it's just a very functional, very well-thought out and executed, robustly-constructed bag made with some great straightforward materials that is fairly fashionable (within its given aesthetic). It is well-suited for carrying a mix of bulky items such as shoes/gym clothing and equipment) while also have plenty of organisation and compartments for work and EDC gear/tech devices, and overall represents what I think is among some of the better bags widely-available at a general consumer-level price point and distribution.
    Conversely, something to consider might be exactly the above - as a solidly consumer-level bag (and being quite excellent for what it is), this bag might not quite satiate the needs of more dedicated carry enthusiasts looking for exotic materials, class-leading refinement or advanced construction, etc. Additionally, while the bag is quite functional for its intended use cases, it also has a relatively lower capacity-to-size ratio and is larger/taller than other bags with a similar or higher capacity. Additionally while zipper access to all compartments is relatively frictionless, the main and laptop compartments don't open quite as wide as we might like which makes accessing items deeper inside harder than it needs to be.
    All in all, the Aer Duffle Pack v3 is a great refinement to an already excellent product and should be high on the list of consideration for anyone looking for a bag that will transition seamlessly from work to the cafe to the gym without skipping a beat.

    Okay so I LOVE this bag. Had the cordura V2. But it got stolen :/ been missing it for a while. I really love how big it was and just learned this one is 4 liters smaller. I also love their x-pac. Would you recommend getting a x-pac v2, or wait for the x-pac v3 that comes in September and not worry about the smaller size ??

    • @TheMountainborn
      @TheMountainborn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Apologies for the late reply!
      So first of all, I'm so sorry to hear your previous bag got stolen!! 😱 That's terrible!
      Regarding your question... I think it depends on what you're carrying whether the extra size really would make a difference or not. For myself, when comparing the two versions I have (the v3 and the v1 - note that the v1 is essentially the same rated capacity as the v2 so I think it's a fair enough comparison) I honestly didn't notice much of a difference in what I could pack in one versus the other. The extra volume seems to come from a slightly (≈4-5cm) difference in the length as opposed to the horizontal or depth dimensions which for me ended up being negligible - it's rare that I would pack something so long that the vertical length of the bag was the constraining factor but usually rather it was the depth or horizontal dimension that would limit what I could pack into it - and here there really isn't much difference between the two bags.
      More than the relatively minor (in practice) difference in capacity, I found that the differing pocket layout was the bigger difference between the two in day-to-day use - I don't know that one is necessarily objectively better than the other but I ended up slightly preferring the updated pocketing on the v3 to the v1 though there were also a couple of points some people might arguably consider a slight regression. But on the whole, I think the v3 is an improvement in EDC usability over the v2 (and also there's the extra water bottle pocket which is probably a plus for most people)
      I noticed you're considering between an x-pac v2 and x-pac v3 so those should be equivalent in material choice (I'm assuming) - thus I would say the main consideration points should be:
      1. Will the new pocketing layout work for you and your needs?
      2. Will the relatively small difference in vertical length *really* make a meaningful difference in what you can/cannot carry inside the v3 vs the v2?
      Only you can answer those two questions for yourself and your particular use cases but on the whole I think *probably* many people would consider the v3 slightly more usable than the v2 and not really notice a practical difference in size during daily use.
      Good luck!

      Me too - I was fascinated by the design and materials/build of this bag which is why I picked it up. It's definitely a very very niche bag in my opinion (an odd intersection of people who want/desire a truly waterproof bag, but in a more urban style with slight amounts of organization... but don't need to carry a laptop or delicate electronic devices... and can live without any kind of external first-order access pocket) but I love it when manufacturers take an idea and run with it - that is part of what makes the carry world so fascinating for me.
      Anyway, it's a fun bag! Definitely worth checking out if you fall into the narrow target demographic of fashionable urban kayaker? 😂

    Another great video! With shoes in the shoe pocket, could you fit a pair of boxing gloves in the main compartment? And subsequently fit other stuff around them (eg clothes, gym towel, boxing hand wraps) and still use the water bottle pockets?

    • @TheMountainborn
      @TheMountainborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tim - great question.
      So I don't have full sized boxing gloves but I was able to fit some MMA style finger gloves (definitely smaller than full sized boxing gloves) in there alongside some gym shoes (size 29cm Nike mens cross-training type sneakers) a towel and a change of clothes whilst still being able to use the water bottle pocket (500ml water bottle). The latter expands outwards somewhat as shown in the video so it should be okay under most loads.
      The main concern I have for your load out is the size of your boxing gloves - I haven't seen any in person in a long time but as far as I recall (and googled) they seem significantly larger than the finger-type gloves I have.
      If you look at the 7th photo on this page:
      www.aersf.com/duffel-pack-3-black
      You'll see what this bag looks like more or less packed out with the loadout you mentioned. I was able to fit my gloves in the top part where there's some grey-looking thing in the sample photo on the Aer site but it was a tight fit (I actually ended up packing the towel atop the clothes which sat atop the shoes in the shoe compartment, thus freeing up a bit more space to fit the gloves.
      If you think your gloves might be able to fit in this space (width is ≈ 30cm as there is some flex since other stuff in your loadout is kind of squishy) then I'd guess it'd be okay, but I'm guessing it might be a tight squeeze.
      One other option - if you can give me the dimensions of your gloves laid next to each other (i.e. as if they were packed in a back, so L x W x H) I can try to roughly measure if they'll fit in there with the rest of that load out.

    • @timrandall5502
      @timrandall5502 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMountainborn I think the most efficient configuration to pack the gloves is on top of each other, palms facing each other so the fingers tucks into the cuff of the other glove.
      In this configuration the length for both gloves is roughly 38 or 39cm. Width roughly 20cm. Depth roughly 16cm.

    Hi mountain, since you mentioned it’s shaped like a racket bag, do you think the bag can fit a tennis racket, with the grip poking out from the top? Thanks.

    • @TheMountainborn
      @TheMountainborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah great question. I don't have a racket handy - do you know the approximate dimensions of the racket(s) you're looking to carry?
      I think it could as long as the non-handle part of the bag isn't too huge - so would want to confirm that.

    I like the look of AER’s bags and they have the certain look you can spot from miles away. I’m curious what you think of AER’s smaller bags I don’t any reviews so I’m guessing you are not overly fond of them. I prefer smaller bags and they have a few in the under 20L so I like that. They just came out with the city pack, I have the original fit pack gym work bag but I do think the version 3 looks much better. They have some travel bags like the flight pack 2 which I think is a very nice looking bag. I’m just curious what your thoughts on them are. I’m going to subscribe really enjoy the reviews I have seen so far. 🙋🏻‍♀️

      Hello again AM! (And sorry once again for my late reply - I was traveling recently so didn't have time to reply to all my comments).
      I actually am a fan of smaller bags (I am particularly interested in the recently developing area of "cross over slings" - i.e. small bags that inhabit the realm between small messengers/bags and really large slings. Ever since the pandemic (and concurrent with the continued evolution and slimming down off my EDC kit) I find myself carrying less and less and find that even many previously "normal sized" 20-24ish liter bags are too big for what I need to routine carry on a daily basis.
      WRT Aer's smaller bags, I actually just released (well a couple of weeks ago) a review of their City Bag which is a fairly small bag by their standards - please check it out if you get a chance, but the tl;dr is that I really, really liked it.
      Beyond that, while I haven't released a review of it yet, I have owned and used the Aer Slim Pack which is a svelte 8.5L but still packs a great punch. I really like this bag for its execution on the ultra-slim EDC bag genre (I find it a more refined and better experience than the Arcteryx Blade 6 for example, which is also in the same genre). If you like the look of Aer bags and are looking for a smaller daily carry bag, either the Slim Pack of the City Pack are both excellent choices.
      Also, if you like Bellroy's aesthetic, I also recommend you check out my review of their Melbourne pack (a few months ago) - this is a good small/slim EDC small pack that has some interesting ideas although I should note it also has some important compromises. Notably, there is an even *smaller* version of this pack available on their site that is even more suitable for people with smaller frames.
      One last suggest - Able Carry's 13 Daybag is another excellent small bag that works great on people with smaller frames, comes in a variety of interesting colors, is made of X-PAC for extra bit of pizzaz in terms of the materials and also is really comfortable to carry. This particular bag was too small for me so I ended up not using it, however I have had very good experiences with Able Carry's other products (Able Carry Max and Able Carry Daypack, the former of which I reviewed recently) so I am certain you will be satisfied with the 13 Daybag if you go with it.
      I hope some of these suggestions help! Good luck!

    Know this may be a bit specific, but I have a full sized MX Keyboard which is about 17 inches long. Do you think this would still be able to fit in the main compartment of the v3?

      Hello fellow mechanical keyboard enthusiast! Wow, that's a huge one! I'm more of a 75%/65% guy myself.
      But yes, that length should fit comfortably in the main compartment with room to spare (unless you've also got the compartment stuffed with something huge like boots and/or your keyboard is ridiculously wide as well, which I can't imagine it is (unless it's one of those ones I sometimes see on r/Mechanicalkeyboards that has a LCD display jutting out the top 😂 )

      If so, I just tried and was able to fit a 16" Macbook Pro + 12.9" iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard cover attached, together in the laptop sleeve. It was a little tight but completely usable.

      LOL well R, my review style is focused on going into deep detail based on extensive use and testing - I believe the details matter.
      There definitely a place for more shallow, faster, bullet-point style reviews too - plenty of other channels out there offer this style (Pack Hacker, Chase Reeves etc.). There's no shortage of algorithm-chasing-quick-bite reviews out there on TH-cam - in fact I'd wager most reviews out there are like that.
      What I have found is the latter style is often just generally a regurgitation of marketing bullet points and mostly conveys information you can find on the website yourself, only in video form (which to be fair, is quite useful since you get a much clearer idea of what a bag looks like in video). I've found these kind of videos most useful in the initial phase of looking for a bag when you're trying to gather broad-based information across a variety of products before narrowing down to a couple of options.
      Once people have narrowed down to a couple of options and are trying to compare deeply between two or three bags and/or are considering fairly expensive bags and want to make a very carefully considered purchasing decision (or understand how bags work for their particular use case) that's when I think these deeper style reviews are more important. I like to think that I spend my money (and make these reviews) so other's won't need to waste their money on making a purchase that doesn't work for them.
      If you find yourself getting frustrated by the deeper, longer review style of my videos might it be possible that you're still in the "browsing" phase? (Or alternatively, maybe the details aren't too important to you and/or you don't mind occasionally making a bad purchase decision? The latter is totally fine, I'm like that too, I buy bags I'm pretty sure will not work for me just because I am curious about them)
      If the above describes you, no worries! It just means you're not in the right phase of the consumer life cycle for this review style to resonate with you. If/when you enter that phase - where you want to double check the explicit details and real world use of a bag you're considering to purchase - then my review style might be more useful for you.
      Anyway, the beauty of TH-cam is that it has an infinite set of videos for any style - go out and find some ones that resonate with you my friend!

      @@TheMountainborni am using v2 which is slightly bigger (3liters more, I think). Gym shoes,shower flip flops, t shirt, shorts, socks, change of underwear, toiletries, towel. If the duffel part had more dimension it would tick all the boxes for me. Aersf should make a 30l duffle pack and it would be the perfect office/gym backpack for me.
