There is Joy in this music. The players and chorus alike are so enjoying each other’s performances. We see it and we feel it, even via TH-cam. To have actually been present when this was music being created would have been ‘a never to be forgotten’ experience of a life time. Such is the power of Bach 290 years later. Praise be to God amidst the horrendous acts of violence unfolding each and every day.
Of course, Shunske Sato is an amazing violinist. But I’m totally taken with his beautiful, bright, wide open, and joyful direction here. You can see that he and the musicians are utterly connected. Stunning and inspired all around!
This performance blows the mind clean of all earthly clutter!!! Must be the best performance of NBS that I have seen so far! Bach in Heaven was tapping his foot to this. In my next life I will sing with the NBS, for now I can listen. Thanks for making such music, we need it desperately to soothe our sick world.
Matthias Helm, bass, is remarkable here. Makes a difficult aria sound easy, but his strong projection throughout the whole range, and the sparkling ornamentation make this one of the top performances ever for the Netherlands Bach Project.
Helm's ornaments in "Großer Herr," are so precisely executed that it reminds me of a figure skater entering a triple axel jump and then landing it with the greatest of ease.... absolutely inspiring.

Everyone on this recording is superb, but I have to say Ulrike Malotta is truly exceptional in "Bereite dich, Zion". The best rendition of this aria I have ever heard. It gives me chills.
Se me partió el alma cuando en la aria con trompeta dijo "Él, que sostiene el Mundo, tiene que dormir en un pesebre" Jesús nació en unas condiciones muy humildes, muy duras, recién nacido dormido en la paja donde las vacas descansaban... y aquí Bach le pone una música bellísima y solemne con una trompeta. Quienes somos cristianos no saben cómo disfrutamos en demasía, en demasía, la música de Bach. Y el coro final "Jesús, hazte una camita suave en lo más profundo de mi corazón para que no pueda olvidarte" coro ufffffffffffff muy lindo, yo lloro.
I've just heard Malotta perform Bach Magnificat in concert with RIAS. I went straight home and came on here to find this beautiful aria sung by her.. My god, she has an incredible voice!! And let me tell you it is even more beautiful in live performance! All the emotions she transports through the music with her timbre are simply amazing

This has become a yearly ritual for me. Thanks for uploading this uplifting and beautiful work of Bach! This is how Christmas should actually feel like, when someone walks through the city, at least for adults. I guess it's too complicated for most kids and teenagers, but boy this fills me with joy, in an age where presents and such don't have such impact anymore.
I can assure you that even though I'm a teenager, I feel transcended the same way, if not more 😅. I don't think that this a matter of age. As well as it is not a matter of religion...

What a wonderful, uplifting performance of this masterwork! It has been a favourite of mine for the last 47 years, and I've enjoyed listening to many versions over that time. This offering ranks amongst the top for its spirit and musicality. It's great to have the English subtitles for the libretto, as well. I look forward to hearing the remaining five cantatas from the Netherlands Bach Society.

I was wondering if your smaller-chorus format would have the required impact for the opening chorus of the Oratorio. Well... absolutely you do! The articulation, colour and full-sound are just great. I've listened to many Christmas Oratorios and this is the best one I've heard.
i've probably said this before but for me these performances are near-definitive for most of the works I have encountered on this wonderful channel - some of the singers are just utterly perfect Bachians.Matthias Helm does wonderful things in Grosser Herr (and has a most unusual articulated trill technique I actually really love)
