- In this first cantata of the Christmas Oratorio - recorded here for All of Bach under direction of Shunske Sato - Bach attains a perfect balance between the jubilant celebration of the birth of Jesus and the serious, sad undertone that points to his fate on the cross. From the orchestral firework show of the opening chorus, via the sensual aria ‘Bereite dich Sion’, to the simple prayer of the final choral, surrounded by the royal sound of the timpani and trumpets.

There is Joy in this music. The players and chorus alike are so enjoying each other’s performances. We see it and we feel it, even via TH-cam. To have actually been present when this was music being created would have been ‘a never to be forgotten’ experience of a life time. Such is the power of Bach 290 years later. Praise be to God amidst the horrendous acts of violence unfolding each and every day.

Of course, Shunske Sato is an amazing violinist. But I’m totally taken with his beautiful, bright, wide open, and joyful direction here. You can see that he and the musicians are utterly connected. Stunning and inspired all around!

Clarity, lightness, body. The listener never fears for the performers and the work is uplifted for it. A half century of scholarship and instrumental development over the best efforts of the 1970s is so clearly heard here. The engineering is invisibly at the service of a recording for the ages.
To have the level of dedication and discipline and still to hold such observable joy, Sato is a remarkable human.
Helm's ornaments in "Großer Herr," are so precisely executed that it reminds me of a figure skater entering a triple axel jump and then landing it with the greatest of ease.... absolutely inspiring.

This performance blows the mind clean of all earthly clutter!!! Must be the best performance of NBS that I have seen so far! Bach in Heaven was tapping his foot to this. I'll miss seeing Shunske Sato in these videos. The Netherlands Bach Society has been a wonderful staple on TH-cam and I've greatly appreciated their work under Sato's leadership. I hope the next director has the same commitment and keeps producing these wonderful videos.

This is how Christmas should actually feel like, when someone walks through the city, at least for adults.
I guess it's too complicated for most kids and teenagers, but boy this fills me with joy, in an age where presents and such don't have such impact anymore.
I can assure you that even though I'm a teenager, I feel transcended the same way, if not more 😅. I don't think that this a matter of age. As well as it is not a matter of religion...

Lebhafte und wunderschöne Aufführung dieses perfekt komponierten Oratoriums mit gut harmonisierten Stimmen des ausgezeichneten Chors und herrlichen Stimmen vierer genialen Solisten sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intelligente und unvergleichliche Violinist-Dirigent leitet das ebenso ausgezeichnete Barockorchester im gut analysierten Tempo und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Alles ist wunderbar und frohe Weihnachten für alle!
i've probably said this before but for me these performances are near-definitive for most of the works I have encountered on this wonderful channel - some of the singers are just utterly perfect Bachians.Matthias Helm does wonderful things in Grosser Herr (and has a most unusual articulated trill technique I actually really love)

What a wonderful, uplifting performance of this masterwork! It has been a favourite of mine for the last 47 years, and I've enjoyed listening to many versions over that time. This offering ranks amongst the top for its spirit and musicality. It's great to have the English subtitles for the libretto, as well. I look forward to hearing the remaining five cantatas from the Netherlands Bach Society.

I was wondering if your smaller-chorus format would have the required impact for the opening chorus of the Oratorio. Well... absolutely you do! The articulation, colour and full-sound are just great. I've listened to many Christmas Oratorios and this is the best one I've heard.

Wonderful, but still only the first part of this oratorium. There are six parts in this. But regarding this first part, I have to say mr Sato and NBS are splendid in singing and playing this the best way.
I understand the difficulty of patience :) The other parts will definitely follow in the coming years. Bach composed the different parts of the Christmas oratorio for different days. This has made us decide to publish the movements separately. That way you will hear each part fresh again.
