Veikko Ahvenainen plays An Operatic Rag, Frosini, 1994

Veikko Ahvenainen is a great performer from Finland. He plays everything from Bach to folk to rock to originals from Frosini, Deiro and his own fine compositions. Here I caught him performing in U.S.A. in 1994 playing his Russian made bayan. Notice that he uses free-bass to capture Frosini's style, since he used a free bass system.

I heard him play several times when he came to San Francisco in the eighties. His playing is amazing....his use of the bellows and dynamics was outstanding. That accordion was the last Bayan made by a very famous Russian builder and perhaps the best sounding bayan I have heard. I once played right before him....now that was intimidating for me ;-)

Thanks for your comment Zac. The full sized bayan has 105 right hand buttons as compared to the standard 92. It also has the free-bass left hand. By pressing a bar all the chord buttons are converted to single notes. Also the bayan has the right hand button board built a third way into the box intead of on the edge. This enable the arm to be more relaxed because the elbow doesn't bend so much. There are also more differences pertaining to tuning...

Veikko plays finnish system, which is unique, probably not used anywhere else but Finland. It's almost like C-system, but the the rows are in different order. C is in the middle row.
