    This motor looks just like my Mercury 75hp. Hopefully the maintenance is roughly the same. I'm worried about the o rings in my lower unit. They may have come out without me noticing. Have a part number for those? Are they all the same size for the lower gear unit?

    • @brinsonmarine
      @brinsonmarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can be different. The best way to get the right part is by looking it up with your engine serial number. Mercury has a good electronic parts catalog you can try using on their website

    Great video. For those of us that live up north and store our boats in unheated garages or outside, how do i make sure all of the water is drained from the motor so it doesn't freeze?

    • @julianberman8600
      @julianberman8600 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The outboards self drain so just make sure the engine is in the upright position and all of your water will drain out

      @@julianberman8600 Like trim down or on?

    • @julianberman8600
      @julianberman8600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SethHarvey yes just trim down and the water will drain out the bottom. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check the gear lube for water intrusion but otherwise the engine is self draining (unlike an inboard engine or I/O)

    • @pikehunter23750
      @pikehunter23750 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @SethHarvey I trim it all the way up....let it drain....then all the way down...let it drain and that should be all of it. There may be some around the prop so when you take it off to drain the gear lube....it should all be out.

    Is it necessary to use a torque wrench when putting prop nut back on?

  • @daniellachance9526

    I have a question: when you say at the beginning at halfway through as well that you’re running the engine after the stabilizer and again on e the oil has been changed, is it safe to do this out of the water? Or do I have to put the boat in the water prior to running it for those few minutes?

    • @viragoxv
      @viragoxv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hook it up to water so you don't burn the engine up which can happen very quickly.. or put it in the lake.... these motors require water

    • @brinsonmarine
      @brinsonmarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. @Chuck Bowling is right, you will need water to safely run the engine. We use motor flushers (or "muffs") to connect a regular garden hose to the engine. The flushers are low cost and work very well. Just make sure the water is actually pumping through the engine when you start it to prevent overheating. You'll see a stream of water (tell tale) spraying out of the engine to indicate that the water pump is working.

    Great video, however I've heard that you don't need to spray fogger into this engine anymore. I've read it's bad for some sensors. Your thoughts? Lots of debate online about this.

    • @kckrol85
      @kckrol85 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am debating on whether I should do this as well. I have the exact same Engine. I have to replace the Plugs this year anyway and wondering if this is absolutely necessary.

    • @brinsonmarine
      @brinsonmarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the feedback! It is true that you don't want to spray the fogging oil into the intake on these fuel injected engines like you would on an older carbureted engine. Because of that, Mercury recommends spraying the fogging oil directly into the cylinders like Alex did it in this video. If you spray the fogging oil directly into the cylinder, it will not damage any sensors or injectors.
      It may seem redundant but just keep in mind that you only need a quick mist of the fogging oil. Just enough to coat the cylinder walls. If you're ever in a situation where you think there may be too much fogging oil in the cylinder, just make sure the spark plugs are removed before turning the engine over to prevent any damage

    • @brinsonmarine
      @brinsonmarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@kckrol85 I'm sure there are plenty of folks that do not use fogging oil and don't run into issues. That said, the purpose of the fogging oil is to prevent any corrosion from developing on the inside of the cylinders while the engine isn't being used. Fogging serves as relatively cheap insurance against the internal corrosion. Mercury recommends it so we include it in the service

    I recently purchased a 90 hp Mercury. Changing oil and filter, fuel filter and lower gear oil tomorrow.
    Should I also change out the impeller?
    I also have a question about a Water Separator? Should I install one as well? If so, can you do a video on that as well?

    • @julianberman8600
      @julianberman8600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mercury recommends replacing the water pump impeller every 3-5 years or 300-500 hours, whichever comes first. Some boats have water separators installed, some don't. It's up to you. We don't have a video on installing a fuel water separator but maybe we can in the future. Thank you

    So you dont have to run antifreeze through the water intake?

    • @julianberman8600
      @julianberman8600 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mercury outboard is self draining so you don't need to run anti-freeze thru it. It's a good practice to tilt the outboard all the way down so it drains any water in the gearcase and if its outside and tilted up we cover the prop so snow/ice/rain don't get into the exhaust area.
