I really appreciate how much time and consideration you have put into your sub plans. As a sub currently, I realize how stupid people think you are. Little do they know I have 2 degrees in education and am interviewing. Middle school kids are the hardest to sub for!! God bless you! They try to get away with everything when they see a sub in the room. I understand they get excited and think they don't have to work but it goes back to how they are being raised. Some kids will talk back or not care , even if you tell them you're writing down their name. I try to give kids the benefit of the doubt but after 3 times of not listening to me or being warned, I have to write down their name. It's amazing how many teachers leave complex lesson plans to follow too. Like be specific and keep them short and sweet. We only have 5 mins before class to review the content so don't expect us to continue the instruction. Thank you for this video!

+Brittney Lyn Hopefully some teachers in your district will see this video and tone down their lesson plans and ramp up their consequences! Lol. Thank you for what you do! I try to make the sub's day as enjoyable as possible because we never have quite enough subs and we need more! :)

It is SO exciting to see my two favorite teacher mentors doing a collab!!! I learn so much from both of you so I know this is going to be great! Thank you so much for being this teacher's teachers. :-)

You are so precious! Great information I am definitely enforcing some type of behavior in my class. I've seen the brownie points on Pinterest and if the kids fill it up they get a treat from me. Thanks for the reminder. Fantastic video!!!!

I’m currently a sub and I’m in my multiple Subject credential program. Subbing sometimes is really hard.... I agree with you and telling the students the assigned work is due at the end of the period and it cannot be turned in late. When I’m a sub I tell them it’s due and if they don’t finish it, it shows the teacher they weren’t working diligently. However it all comes down to the teacher sometimes, I HATE when the teacher leaves me with busy work. The kids know it’s busy work and they mess around and don’t get it done. I can go on and on... when I do sub middle school, I hand out the assignment for the students and I study for my csets while the class works on their assignment lol

I'm an 18 year veteran, but I love hearing what young teachers have to say! I'm on year two of perfect attendance, so I rarely have a sub, but I keep plans just in case. Thanks for all of the great advice and reminders.
I will be checking out Bridget's video because I enjoy her channel and the fact that she spells her name the same way I do. Haha!

Such good info! I took 3 days off last week and sub plans were a nightmare, mostly because I am a floater. It was so stressful wondering whether my things would get disturbed in each of my 4 different classrooms over 3 days. I love the idea of not accepting late work from a sub day and being really clear on that- not something I did last week and it was a pain in my side.

You should try what we have done at our school. We record ourselves teaching the class or walking them through the activities. If your subs have access to technology, you can just have them play it over the projector. In our school this is fairly easy to do if we leave our laptop and directions for the sub. This takes a lot of pressure off of the sub to explain things. It also kind of freaks the kids out a bit because they've seen your face even though you're not there.

+Plan2bPerfect With Courtney Oh wow, that would be awesome! If only we had teacher laptops! Or something to film on. Or desktop computers that weren't from the 90's, lol. If my district ever steps up our tech resources I will totally try that!

+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) Oh that does stink. I'm in a title 1 school and it used to be that way until we started to get funding from somewhere lol. Do you guys have a BYOD program? I remember the days of it being hard. I'm sure it will get better soon!

+Plan2bPerfect With Courtney I think we're trying to work up toward all that. We got 2 Chromebook carts and 2 iPad carts recently, but I can't use any of them because I'm on the second floor and there's no elevator. One of these days our Title 1 status will pay off for me! Lol! ;)

That would never work where I went to high school. Most of subs were older people who couldn’t figure out how to turn on the teachers computer let alone plan a video.

Hi you had some great ideas. For 5 years I was 1of 8 permanent sub's. My district experimented with this idea. We were sent out I. our field or as close as possible.. so we actual taught the lesson ,esp if subbing for a few days.I. always carried puzzles iny subject.. wordsearch, crossword, logic...that I would give out when lesson completed. this helped a great deal...We worked 200days..so we were out the same days as reg teachers..on pre and post days we would go to a school our choosing or requested and help teachers open /close their class room.

Some teachers I sub for need to watch this. Sometimes I find myself having to explain/semi teach a lesson and I sub for middle and high school! And i'm an art teacher! In a math class I am totally lost when a teacher gives them a worksheet they have no idea how to do!

This is my second year teaching, and I teach 6th grade (Elementary). My issue when getting a sub is that they are completely worthless. I hate being out but when I am for an IEP or "training," I get subs that sit and look at their phones all day or ignore what I have written as sub plans and do their own thing. I even had a sub say they couldn't find my plans - my room is OCD clean, they were sitting at the center of the kidney table (in NEON GREEN). So I have resorted to letting my sub be a worthless babysitter, and I assign ALL WORK within Google Classroom, my students are expected to get their work done, but it would be nice if the babysitter would check to see what the kids are doing on their chromebooks.

+MsBestInShow That's really cool that you can do everything through Google Classroom! Helps to keep them accountable.

This is such a great idea for a video! I had to get a last minute sub yesterday to take my puppy to the vet and I came back today needing to write five referrals because some of the boys convinced my sub they needed to use the computer lab to finish a project and spent the whole class period photocopying pictures of their butts instead!

+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) I have no idea, but the horrified look on their faces when I reminded them that there is a security camera in the computer lab was priceless. One of them couldn't even speak above a whisper when he asked, "Mrs. Farris.... Did you see my butt cheeks?"

I'm graduating with my degree in December. Can you make a video with tips on the subbing process and subbing experience. Would it be better to just be a sub for my grade level (HS) or do you suggest subbing for all grade levels?

+Jonelle Roberts Hi Jonelle! I do teach both. If you scroll back a few months in my videos I have a couple about how I got started. But the short version is I have credentials in Social Studies, PE and English, and degrees in Liberal Studies and Kinesiology :)

+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) Oh wow thank you for replying that's amazing!! I'm new to your channel so I'm going to defiantly go watch that video on how you got started. The main reason I asked was because I'm a Sophomore in college and I'm taking my class that I need to get into the college of education currently and right now I am Secondary Education the subject being English but I love History as well and that's what made me curious about how you were able to do both.

You say that you, "can't really expect your substitutes to actually teach something?" Really? I am a certified teacher and a substitute teacher. I am highly qualified to not only follow a lesson plan from another teacher but instruct the students in a professional and competent manner. Also your comment that "I always tell my students that I know some substitutes are weird", is insulting. You then go on to say you tell your students that they should give their substitutes respect. Talk about mixed messages. I was subscribed to your channel but after this video I am not. It's too bad because you have good suggestions in this video but please, show some respect yourself in your videos toward your teaching colleagues.

+Jen Ocean I really appreciate your feedback Jen! Thank you for wording it in a constructive way. Since I have kids who are a little bit older, I just don't want to assume that a substitute who has a Masters in Biology is going to be able to come in and follow a History lesson plan from primary source documents about the reasons for and consequences of the Cherokee Nation assimilation to American culture, for example. I never know which area a substitute is trained in, so I don't think it's fair of me to ask them to teach anything too in depth.
I often get kids giving me the excuse that "the sub was weird" so that's why they didn't get their work done. I was trying to make the point that it doesn't matter if you liked the sub or not, you're responsible for you. But you're right, I totally sent a mixed message and sounded like I don't respect substitutes. There were a few minutes of dialogue that I trimmed out of the video that might have provided more context, but I agree, not my best representation of myself!
