What I absolutely love about this is how much these guys analyze. After the winner finished, they all were so interested in things like “what was your biggest bargain? What did you spend the most on but never use?” It seems like everyone enjoyed the race and it made it a great watch too.
Yeah though I'm happy it didn't since it could maybe have made the Flygon's extremely optimal plays throughout the late game felt a bit less strong, and of course the E4 run wouldn't be as hype
Not Kidd calling Decidueye trash and then it coming in mad handy on Whacko’s team at the end lol now that’s poetry. We love to see grass owl succeed This was a great race, can’t wait to see the highlight vid eventually
This would be really cool to do for charity. Like obviously start with a reasonable amount of money to be considered disposable for everyone involved and use that.
Or do it in waves, like a few at the beginning, then when the donation goal hits x amount, start new auction with amount raised split between everyone. To spice it up make all streamers donate at end based of standing. First place is nothing, second is x amount of donation, 3rd is 2X and so on, anyone who fails to complete is 5X. Just to give the streams a sense of urgency.
Honestly just making it a streamer thing, with some popular boys, where the donations they get are what is used for the auction could be pretty fun. Though you would need to make sure everyone is around equal level of popularity, or even include some popular ones, with some of the streamers with high skill. So if you can see if it is pay 2 win, or the talented nuzlockers would still do better.
It’s so funny to see the stream that only knows Pchal and Kidd saw they have the best odds. No one knows vanilla emerald better than Flygon and Wacko is crazy.
The whole draft nuzlocke has been an interesting concept. It’s cool to see the change when “experienced” nuzlockers tackle this. It is interesting to see their knowledge of the game specifically influence their choices. From the routes they take to the mons they pick up. It’s amazing to me how quickly everyone was able to come up with a plan with new mons in front of them. As I’m sure they were already somewhat team building before/ during the draft. But, I know that they did make use of new Pokemon as well as some staples from previous runs they have done. Looking forward to when this happens again. With either a new cast of characters, a new rom, or a new twist. I think an interesting direction to take this might be a “coaching” aspect. There are examples of this in the Pokemon community. But, as far as the draft it could be that each player has a coach and they share the same cash pool. Each round alternates between players and Coaches (all players do a bid then the coaches it could be an alternating thing or all the players could go through a set number of Pokemon then the coaches do the end of the draft). Keeps the draft fun and there is another layer of strategy and comedy. Having to either get the silly Pokemon you want or thinking about trusting your coach to pick out better Pokemon with their share. Once the draft is over each team has some time to converse a bit. Once the run starts the coach and the player they are matched with play the game. The coach gives guidance on where to go, who to bring, etc. But, for every “important fight” (bosses, rivals, gym leaders, etc) the coach isn’t allowed to give any guidance during the actual battle. So it would be important for things to be discussed beforehand. The no communication thing might be a little to strict (even if it’s only for the important fights) so maybe per gym they get 1 sos emergency time out that lets the coach talk them through a series of plays to maybe make but, after the player takes 2-3 turns they have to deafen(back to no communication for that fight) again. More rom hacks are also a cool way to spice up the formula but, it could be dangerous if they are rom hacks that only some are familiar with. I would personally like to see how the draft might change in a draft centered around double battles. TLDR I love drafting in Pokemon. Having “pros” do the drafting was super interesting to see. Having double battles or a team/ coaching element might be really cool. But, honestly there is a lot you could do with if you choose to revisit this format. This stream proves that there is still a lot that can be done with the draft nuzlocke series.
i don't know how much influence we vod watchers have but this was absolutely my FAVORITE draftlocke, i loved watching the professionals go at it and i also loved your commentary and analysis, i am soooo looking forward to another one in the future! you've got amazing cast, it was such a delight to have so many creators i love in one place. one of the alpharad vods of all time for sure
One thing I'd probably add for this is to give everyone with money left some fodder pokemons as bonus, something like a zigzagoon that can't ever attack (nor use the cap candy on) for every 300/500/any amount you agree on. So that at least the people who saved some money have a little bonus
If you want to do this again and also participate, you could have someone else make the list and then do auctions like they do in the monopoly videogame where it cycles through everyone and it's either bid or drop out. Might even be able to make a think with a few buttons to automate it. Edit: Also have any leftover money take off from your time, a minute per $100. That seems impactful enough to matter without being an actual strategy. Basically functions as a handicap. Edit2: What about a Draftlocke where everyone submits 20 Pokemon to be in the list. If more than one person picks the same Pokemon, it still only gets added once. No one knows the final count.
Please host more of these! I put this vid on expecting to be entertained by the auction portion and be able to fall asleep during the gameplay race, but here I am at the Flannery part way too invested and excited to sleep lol Great choices for the background music, too. Good thing this was posted on a Friday night and I can watch the whole thing!
I think it was good to add some money part way into the draft, but I think it could have been a smaller amount so as not to punish the players who were saving up as much. But yes, it definitely made the drafting more exciting again. This was very entertaining, thanks for introducing me to Whacko!
this is cool to see and def repeatable with the optional improvements about the drafting and a different set of pokemon. it makes me want to watch everyones POV with their own commentary as well
Since Jacob mentioned a good few times throughout this that he wants feedback on this style of content, ill go ahead and mention that i love this. Seeing races and general competitions in games like pokemon or maybe some mario games is a lot of fun. And having Alpharad as the host basically get to just be watching along with us is like grade A non-slop reaction content
Something that might be interesting in future attempts is have something to do with left over money . Lets say Some one loses the last bid and has 1000 bucks, that could mean they start with game corner coins or some vitamins . Nothing too crazy but still a consultation .
Rather than the idea of "you have to use every pokemon you draft/buy," I think perhaps "Each pokemon can't be used again after being brought to a gym leader fight" might be a better way of forcing people to use a wide variety of pokemon. Though, that would mean you actually have no incentive to keep your pokemon alive in each fight, and it also means you'd need to draft a LOT of pokemon which would take a long time. I think ideally you'd do something like "each pokemon can be used for 2-3 gym leaders" or something, but that's significantly more clunky because you have to keep track of how many times you've used that 'mon. Also, this was a great idea! I loved it!
Idea for a future draftlock: Hardcore nuzlockers and people that have no nuzlocking experience, after drafting have them pair up (preferably randomly) pro with noob and now we have a soullock, the first drafted mons for both are linked together and so on You give the pros a reason to coach the newbies, have way more chatter to listen in on, more losses which gives possibilities for comebacks and uses more of their boxes and shakes up expected teams because they still have to check which pairs of mons can be used together on a team according to soullock rules
I really enjoyed this! I think there's a lot of variation that could be done in the auction, increasing minimum bids over time, organizing by types, mystery prizes, auctioning some held items/evolution items, there's a lot of options that could be fun.
3:13:08 omg this is so sweet, when I found out Arlie was gonna be a part of the thing I was so excited because all my favorites were doing something together
I think it'd be cool to add certain items to the auction next time. Like that one that lets you switch to a pokemon's hidden ability, or just being able to have a boosting item guarenteed at the start.
Kidd mentioned the “Nuzlockers vs speedrunners” event he hosted and honestly having a team setup would be kinda cool for this. Like everyone would still draft for themselves, but people would be on teams so they’d have to coordinate their drafts to they don’t accidentally leave someone on their team without a specific type coverage/gym answer, which also gives the other team an opportunity to snipe said Pokemon. (And also instead of just fastest time, it’d be the total time of all of the team members.)
Don’t know if Jacob will see this but maybe having a list of types (probably just the 1st) for all the Pokemon in the auction, then around like around 12-16 Pokemon per person Edit: or have auction tiers like early game, mid game and late game for more budgeting
Ideas for next race: *Trading period after draft, before race *some H2h battle element at end *Alpha spontaneously controls AI or injects chaos some other way during race *Players allowed some custom nominations during draft *general quality improvements to draft: Salary values visible, bid timer, highlight highest bidder *auction some held items *some chat selected pokemon for auction pool (dono incentive or polls for the memes)
Love the format! Also mad respect for dropping Ironmon. It's waaaay too RNG heavy and repeatative. There are like 5 poketubers that i used to watch freaquently, that i basically completely stopped watching because all they did was ironmon for MONTHS!
Love this! Suggestion would be if in the black space between all the screens we could have like a badge list to easily see what gym each person is on? Since they announce when they complete the gym leader, wouldn't be too difficult beside the graphic formatting. But I love any competitive nuzlocking.
Different idea for something like this: you know the "you have $15 monies to spend on pokemon what do you get?" And then there are like 4 categories ranging from $5 to $1 why not make something like that, give people the different cards and a certain amont of money?
I think the auction is such a hype event that you could include the community somehow next time! Have a vote on a pokemon that participants have to prebid on before the auction, no bids afterwards. Or subscribers being able to submit pokemon to a wheel and some of the auctionable pokemon are decided live by spinning. :)
Lowkey wish thered be a buyable item to give someone a hidden ability or something using an earned credit or something. Feel like it would enable pretty good viability
"I should have brought a hammer" could have borrowed Ludwigs from the charity auction with Conner last year lnfao. Oh and I like the way point Crow does his races, chat gets set to emote only no Infor sharing allowed.
I dunno if you check the YT VOD comments, but if (and hopefully when!) you do this again, I'd like there to be something for people that have money left at the end, that way if they're not top dollar in the last couple of mon they'd still get something even if it's minor.
It's funny to see everyone way overvalue kubfu because they're all run and bun pilled lol. Extremely entertaining as always and nice to see "experienced" nuzlockers try this for a change!
Definitely have an announced top up of money before hand. So they can still have money saving strategies and the betting can be interesting but anyone that plans around saving won't be screwed over
To keep the last pokemon from just simply going to whoever has the highest money maybe players should have some sort of reward for the money they've kept, perhaps money in game but I doubt that's super useful
For next time: Put in a extremely weak pokemon that can be traded in the late game for a some legendary. Reward the players for picking a bad pokemon at the auction!
Honestly as far as the auction goes i feel like a lot of the problem could have been solved by just revealing the whole auction list at the beginning. People still have to make their strategy on the fly but they don’t have to gamble on what’s next being better, it makes the bidding more competitive, and if you want some element of surprise you can leave the legendary a surprise since they’ll still know it’s a legendary.
You should do the bidding in a discord chat so that theres no confusion on who bet first and how much. Also, it be interesting if the amount of money a player ends with is added to their trainer.
Like it, think a silent draft would be interesting spin. Or possibly adding a time penalty to certain based on amount spent, or a head start based on amount spent. Also a penalty on amount left at end
why is alpha continuously cheating flygon out of money? :p edit: big issue with this format if you decide to host a competition like it again: For some reason you keep on full-screening peoples streams so we can't see the others, even when they are clearly more interesting, or at least the whole picture if more interesting than some focus. I agree that sizing it up makes sense to show who has your focus, but I think it should simply size them up, but leave the others at least as still _visible._ ps: also, you covered bottom left participant with mic icons :p And top left with your webcam, but that was your own stream so it was fine.
awesome stream/video idea & i loved watching this vod, but as you guys discussed it does need some adjustments. i think cutting down to ~75 mons would be good, essentially 15 to each player on average. this would make boxes easier to remember to some degree, but also make deaths more punishing. as for the economy, instead of boosting everyones money, maybe give rewards after the auction based on the amount they have remaining? for example, an item shop (that they dont know the wares of until after auction); it could contain anything from early evo stones, to type-boosting held items, to vitamins, to a rather expensive leftovers. things such as choice items &, arguably even moreso, life orb would be explicitly op tho, imo. lefties is fantastic but it most benefits slow play, which i think makes it far more balanced by comparison. maybe even toss in pokemon-specific items, like leek & thick club alternatively, there could be a direct conversion of remaining money into a specific item, like a rare candy that allows you to exceed lvl cap. as far as that conversion rate goes, its hard to judge, but maybe 500:1 or 1000:1? bear in mind, this is in a hypothetical game where players dont receive an extra $5000. you could hide as much of this information from the players as you want. smth vague like "you can use your extra points afterward for smth nice" or "youll be able to exchange money for rare candies, but i wont tell you the price" i think these sort of post-auction benefits ultimately hinge on how valuable the pokemon themselves are. someone with a strategy akin to flygons, for example, could dump money on 3 strong mons up front, pick up a few cheaper desirables as the auction goes on, then be *heavily* rewarded by being able to dump all remaining funds to buff up the mons hell be bringing to nearly every fight. in that sense, there should probably be a hard cap to how many you can receive. it may even be wise to set this in relation to the number of mons they own in some way, thusly not rewarding players with a smaller amount of exceptionally strong mons so much. or, the price increases for each one you buy. say a candy starts at 500, then 750 for the second, then 1000, etc. this logic can also be applied to the aforementioned shop, where even with a wider range of items, duplicates scale in price as well. this isnt AS necessary because the base prices & generally economy is far more customizable for each item, but as the rest of this comment goes, its smth to consider. it would probably be better to not allow duplicate purchases in the shop anyway addendum: would post-auction mon trades be interesting? i think it undeniably changes the dynamic of the auction itself, hard to say in a good or bad way, but having the players interact with each other more directly by making deals right before they even begin the competition, all while others have to watch a deal unfold that they are potentially NOT happy about, could be good for content. i do think it should be limited to one trade per player though, just for the sake of time as well as stressing the importance of purchases in the auction itself. it would be funny to see someone make a trade for a mon that ends up harshly underperforming, like flygons breloom, while they gave away a mediocre mon that pops off, i.e. decidueye thanks for the stream! & happy auction.... unday? excuse any typos, i dont feel like proof reading a youtube comment more than i alr have
I think if you do the extra money thing again in the future it should be in order to take it they have to sacrifice like 3 Pokémon whether that’s random or of their choosing
If they do auction of less pokemon, they could possibly auction of some items (e.g. repels at the start) and maybe auction of tips about the auction that might be usefull.
I put this on to fall asleep and ended up having a dream I was on vacation with everyone except Jacob wanted me to sleep like, on this tiny lil space on the other side of a door and everywhere around the space was just a gigantic drop into a pit and he was like "you'll be fine just keep your feet under the door" and long story short I was about to fall into the pit and screaming for help but only Jan came to help me. Thanks Jan, I understand why you hate Jacob now.
If you do this again, (and I hope you do) perhaps when you double money or add more. Announce at the same time that there is going to be an item draft afterwards too.
If this happens again, there should be a pokemon that, after buying it, turns out to be zoroark
And another one for ditto
And another one for mew

I love the draftlockes, and auctioning Pokémon was a really fun twist. I'd love to see more of this type of video and cant wait for the edited version

awesome idea! next time, if they run out of money, they can bid by using a time handicap! like 10 seconds = 100 dollar bid or something like that.
To keep the last pokemon from just simply going to whoever has the highest money maybe players should have some sort of reward for the money they've kept, perhaps money in game but I doubt that's super useful
Something like "The 3 players with the highest money have a 5 minute headstart" Which is a boon, but doesnt knock anyone outta contention
@@PirateOfGermany A straight up downside for whoever gets the last mon is heat but like in a bad way where it probably won't feel as good
I don't watch a tooooon of alpharad content but this was an instant click. Love this idea
I clicked on this so fast once I saw my man FlygonHG! He’s my fav YT Nuzlocker!
The E4 nail bitter was so hype! Please do more of these!
Holy shit, that was soo good, I can't believe I saw all 5 hours of it
The auction was really entertaining for some reason!
never heard of whacko before this but he's so funny. will be tuning into whacko content now
For next time: Put in a extremely weak pokemon that can be traded in the late game for a some legendary.
The idea of 1000 dollar buy in on a nuzlocke pokedraft with a winnings of 3k to first place, 2k to 2nd place sounds fantastic
You guys should absolutely do this as a charity stream, maybe in a moded ORAS?
Neat cotent. Had so much fun watching!!
Loved the concept
You should do the bidding in a discord chat so that theres no confusion on who bet first and how much. Also, it be interesting if the amount of money a player ends with is added to their trainer.
I am loving content like this!!!
Like it, think a silent draft would be interesting spin. Or possibly adding a time penalty to certain based on amount spent, or a head start based on amount spent. Also a penalty on amount left at end
It would be fun to add a trading round.
Side note: the drafting process unlocked something in my brain. It's gambling but no one actually loses money. Brilliant.
Pchall is that guy that trolls strategically it's needed but welcome to your villain roll 😂
why is alpha continuously cheating flygon out of money? :p
edit: big issue with this format if you decide to host a competition like it again: For some reason you keep on full-screening peoples streams so we can't see the others, even when they are clearly more interesting, or at least the whole picture if more interesting than some focus.
I agree that sizing it up makes sense to show who has your focus, but I think it should simply size them up, but leave the others at least as still _visible._
ps: also, you covered bottom left participant with mic icons :p And top left with your webcam, but that was your own stream so it was fine.
"If people like this, I will absolutely do more..." YES, PLEASE!!!
I really enjoyed this and hope you do more!
awesome stream/video idea & i loved watching this vod, but as you guys discussed it does need some adjustments. i think cutting down to ~75 mons would be good, essentially 15 to each player on average. this would make boxes easier to remember to some degree, but also make deaths more punishing. as for the economy, instead of boosting everyones money, maybe give rewards after the auction based on the amount they have remaining? for example, an item shop (that they dont know the wares of until after auction); it could contain anything from early evo stones, to type-boosting held items, to vitamins, to a rather expensive leftovers. things such as choice items &, arguably even moreso, life orb would be explicitly op tho, imo. lefties is fantastic but it most benefits slow play, which i think makes it far more balanced by comparison. maybe even toss in pokemon-specific items, like leek & thick club
alternatively, there could be a direct conversion of remaining money into a specific item, like a rare candy that allows you to exceed lvl cap. as far as that conversion rate goes, its hard to judge, but maybe 500:1 or 1000:1? bear in mind, this is in a hypothetical game where players dont receive an extra $5000. you could hide as much of this information from the players as you want. smth vague like "you can use your extra points afterward for smth nice" or "youll be able to exchange money for rare candies, but i wont tell you the price"
i think these sort of post-auction benefits ultimately hinge on how valuable the pokemon themselves are. someone with a strategy akin to flygons, for example, could dump money on 3 strong mons up front, pick up a few cheaper desirables as the auction goes on, then be *heavily* rewarded by being able to dump all remaining funds to buff up the mons hell be bringing to nearly every fight. in that sense, there should probably be a hard cap to how many you can receive. it may even be wise to set this in relation to the number of mons they own in some way, thusly not rewarding players with a smaller amount of exceptionally strong mons so much. or, the price increases for each one you buy. say a candy starts at 500, then 750 for the second, then 1000, etc. this logic can also be applied to the aforementioned shop, where even with a wider range of items, duplicates scale in price as well. this isnt AS necessary because the base prices & generally economy is far more customizable for each item, but as the rest of this comment goes, its smth to consider. it would probably be better to not allow duplicate purchases in the shop anyway
addendum: would post-auction mon trades be interesting? i think it undeniably changes the dynamic of the auction itself, hard to say in a good or bad way, but having the players interact with each other more directly by making deals right before they even begin the competition, all while others have to watch a deal unfold that they are potentially NOT happy about, could be good for content. i do think it should be limited to one trade per player though, just for the sake of time as well as stressing the importance of purchases in the auction itself. it would be funny to see someone make a trade for a mon that ends up harshly underperforming, like flygons breloom, while they gave away a mediocre mon that pops off, i.e. decidueye
thanks for the stream!
This was a great idea!
super fun roster... well done!
run it back, run it back. its great. thanks for the content.
Whacko in an Alpharad thumbnail. Love it.
I also think time deductions for each lost mon could be interesting. Or additions i guess
Now after just the draft I can see why no SMALLANT due to the lack of WOOPER
Shout out to Alpha, the Scott Hansen of Pokemon
This is a sick idea
At 1.5 to 1.75 speed makes it feel more like an auction
I put this on to fall asleep and ended up having a dream I was on vacation with everyone except Jacob wanted me to sleep like, on this tiny lil space on the other side of a door and everywhere around the space was just a gigantic drop into a pit and he was like "you'll be fine just keep your feet under the door" and long story short I was about to fall into the pit and screaming for help but only Jan came to help me.
Thanks Jan, I understand why you hate Jacob now.
Why does Drxx's camera look like it was made in 2005 lol
WHO doesn't like ghost types D:
If you do this again, (and I hope you do) perhaps when you double money or add more. Announce at the same time that there is going to be an item draft afterwards too.
