This is one of those solos that I thought I’d never be able to play when I was more of a beginner. So now, 25 years later, thanks to TH-cam, it’s easily broken down and one of the most playable solos in metal, and you look awesome when you pull it off. I’ve learned to just take everything in sections. One at a time. So many things are just repetitive anyway. I will never tell myself I can’t play something again. Neither should any of you. STAY METAL!!!!!!

If bruh here's anything like me, which it kinda sounds like, the journey was more like "Really wants to learn the solo from 'One' - Reads the tabs - Tries to play from the tab - Fails miserably - [25 years pass] - Finds someone on TH-cam who shows 'em what to actually DO - Learn how to play the solo. Because unless you are some kind of savant, you can't just pick up a sheet of notes and play the song, you need some form of training /tutorship. Which, back in the day, meant guitar lessons, which, pffft, we were either too broke or too cool to get. These days, you have dozens of parasocial private guitar teachers at your fingertips, which means you can save yourself decades of agony, and learn that solo in a couple of weeks, tops!
Carl Brown is the best guitar teacher in TH-cam, far a lot better than Marty, Justin or any other popular tuitors here in YT...Carl just explains every lesson precisely and straight to the point, a lot less talking...I've learned a lot of rock guitar solos because of this guy...God bless you, Carl. Thanks so much from the bottom of my heart...:)

Red Diggity Dawg i agree that it's not easy, there's couple ways to play it, and to play it like on the record and make it sound clean is pretty fucking hard, this guy isn't even close, he's off tempo and he messed up pretty much every hard part in it, and he reduced amount of tapping notes in the beginning to make it easier
Don't never say that i practiced fade to black main solo for 1 month and than i said.. fuck it it's impossible and i left my guitar to the side for 2 months and than i decided i must try again ang guess what i can do it now. it is all in your head. the problem you have is just like mine. you get to in to it. relax. mess up. pick it up from the begining. practice practice ptmractice. good luck.you can do it

@@underinfluence9001 just a warning though. If you somehow successfully played Washington is Next, then please don't try Aviator solo. You wouldn't want your guitar to be smashed and destroyed by your own hands. Try that after 10 years of intense training.

In the explication of the tapping part, in the final way out, there´s a little mistake in the 3:00 minute. The halftone movement is really in the last part. You play perfect when you are playing at real tempo. Its only a mistake in the part of being playing slowly for us. It is really fast but a lot of the solo is done by tapping, which is really easy to do fast. Tapping is also in songs like Eruption or even the power rangers theme.
I find it quite difficult :( I'm stuck at the second part, I can do the tapping in the intro but I can't quite get the part that goes 17-15 on the high E to 19-17-15-17-19 on the B up to full speed :L Can anybody that can solo well help a rookie solo-er out, this is my first go at a fast solo.
Since 1995, i never learned that solo because it was too hard. My son want to learn it so this morning, before he wakeup, i learned it like in 10min. Repeat 2 and 3 times each licks. Its a crazy feeling. I was not mid motivated to learn it for me. It was i needed to learn it to show to my son. It was not about motivation, it was all about i should do it.
Hi Carl - excellent lesson. Just one observation. The tapping pattern at the beginning is 2 groups of 3 notes: 19-15-12 19-12-15 and repeat. It is much closer to what you hear in the recording. Thanks a lot for your lessons!!

I learned eruption tapping a while ago and figured id give this a go. obviously in eruption its tapping left to right or up the fretboard I guess you could say, this is tapping down the fretboard and let me tell you going that way after playing the other way for so long... its incredibly hard to break that habit and muscle memory.
Back in the day Eddie Van Halen played this and looked at everyone like, “Hey guys look what I can do. Isn’t this fantastic!” And everyone’s mind was blown. Today I’m seeing how freakin easy the principle is. Not saying it’s easy to play, just so much easier to understand.
If speed is an issue for the initial tapping section using the pick instead of a finger is a nice cheatcode, changes the sound a bit but it's way easier to go fast, since you gotta go fast Satch uses that technique a lot and he taught Kirk so not surprised if he's done that before
I absolutely _wrecked_ the fretboard of my first guitar doing that on this exact solo. Big chips on all the frets I was tapping (I didn't know how to tap and the tab book said to use a pick so....)
This solo got SO MUCH easier for me. Just got my guitars action set up super low, this whole time I've been working 4x as hard on these solos cause my free float bridge was cocked forward and anything passed fret 12 was raised well beyond what it should have been. Working with what I had to vs. what it is now just made this hell of a lot less painful and the sound is night and day.
I might have the same problem but I'm not sure...Could you please explain what a "free float bridge" is...I'm a german and i already tried to tanslate the whole comment but it didn't make any sence
I’m up to 4:41 and I’m doing the hammer ons nearly at a good speed but when I go fast I can’t hear the notes. I’ve been doing hammering on and pull of exercises for a week and no difference. I’m starting to think my pickups are too low
can I please ask how can u make those Pull offs that loud mine are totally silent that lick at 4:44 i mean hammer on are ok but those fast pull offs ....
Hey! The lick from 4.12 onwards is the bit I struggle with. Exactly how many times are you picking for each round? Could you break it down ie. Pick-pull off-pick-pull-pull-hamm-hamm etc if that makes sense?!

hey Carl..... How long does it take you to learn the song before you teach it? And how long until you forget it? I know I'll learn a song, then I'll learn 5 other songs by the time I finish the other 5 songs I already forgot half the licks from the first one. Its amazing how some people just never forget. I thought about this with singers as well.

I tap it 19-12-15 feels smoother that way. It probably doesn't matter at top speed. Doing 19-12-15 is probably more of a EVH style

A free floating bridge (such as a floyd rose bridge) allows the whammy bar to be pulled up or down.
