Why You Shouldn't Run 35" Ridge Grapplers on Your New Truck! || 2022 Ram 3500 Megacab Dually

This is why you have to research things yourself and don’t listen to other people with “expert” advice. The max load on the stock dually tires for a Ram 3500 is 2835 pounds per tire for the dually configuration (117 E). Every tire you showed in that chart in the video exceeds that load. So you could have gotten the correct fitting tires so you didn’t have that odd gap between your rear tires because they would have been enough to exceed the max load of the stock dually tires (per tire) that Ram provides and support the max payload of your dually when combined in a dually configuration as they are on your truck.
I want to add, what you’re discussing (max tire pressure load) doesn’t affect your tow rating. The tow rating is how much your truck can pull. The max pressure load rating of the tires affects your payload support. How much payload you can safely put on the tires, which is its max. Adding larger tires does cause loss of tow rating, but that is a different issue than max load pressure you’re discussing.
When adding larger tires, you should add shorter gears to bring your tow rating back to the factory rating. For the 295/65R20 you have, if you have 3.73 gears you would need to upgrade to 4.10 gears to maintain factory tow capacity and if you have 4.10 gears, you would need to upgrade to 4.56 gears to maintain the factory tow rating. If you don’t change the gears you’ll lose a few thousand pounds of tow capacity going from stock tires to the larger tires. The larger tires and rims will also lessen your trucks payload capacity since they will be heavier than the stock wheels. So you should have your empty truck (minus any people) but with a full tank of gas and full fluids, weighed on a Cat Scale at a truck stop to find your available payload (to do this, minus what your truck weighs from the GVWR on your door jamb sticker) so you don’t overload your payload when towing or loading your truck, thinking you have the full payload capacity of the truck listed on the door jamb sticker when you won’t.
Going back to the tire size and max load pressure, this is what the Tire Pressure website says about the max load for the stock tires for the dually configuration (117 E) that a Ram 3500 dually comes with (the max pressure of the stock tires is less than you would have with any tire from that list in the video):
“LT235/80R17/E 120/117 tire with load range E and load index of 120 has a maximum single tire load capacity of 3085 lbs @ 80 psi, capable of supporting up to 3085 pounds or 1399 kilograms, while dual tire application with load index of 117 has a maximum dual tire load capacity of 2835 lbs @ 80 psi, capable of supporting up to 2835 pounds or 1286 kilograms when inflated to its maximum air pressure of 80 pounds per square inch (psi) or 552 kilopascals (kPa).”

Thanks for the details. So if I am happy enough with the tow and weight ratings capability of the larger tires, kept the same gear ratio, then in theory at least the mileage would increase a little bit? Thanks

I had these same tires on my 2019 Ram dually. they lasted 31,000 miles and started falling apart. Just yesterday mounted some Coopers. Hope I get more miles out of them!

Unless your going off-road A LOT. the ridge grappler just isn’t a good tire for an HD imo. I prefer the terra-grappler G2. A much better road tire with moderate off-road capability, has longer road life, And is way quieter on the highway. Also still looks good
Edit: you can also get the 35 in a 12 ply

I have 2023 Ram 3500 Limited DRW HO 6.7 , Aisin Trans, 4.1 Gear with black out package. I had full body Suntek PPF and Ceramic coating plus nano ceramic tint for interior including the windshield. Yes, I spent little over 8k total. I think it is worth it.. In 3-5 years, i will be able to tell more but for the moment, I don't have the single rock chips and my paint will not fade in 5-10 years. Downside on PPF is that in about 8-10 year time, you need to take them off, otherwise, it will be very difficult to get them off.

  • @genecoppedge5972

Nice video, love seeing the build come together. I have PPF on my existing truck and will be adding it to the one I have on order. It is absolutely worth having done if you are concerned with paint chips. Also, it's quite a bit less than $7k - unless you are doing the entire vehicle, which isn't typically needed. You can do the front (entire front end, a-pillars, headlights, etc.) and the dually hips with a hi quality PPF for about $2500.

I spent around 8k for the whole vehicle/windshield/tint/headlight for my 2023 3500 Limited DRW HO6.7 Night Edition 4.1 Gear. It is good, work quality was B level, and bit overpriced.. It is easier to wash with PPF on entire car. And if you keep your truck for long time, color will fade in the same all the way around.

I have the same truck in black. A quote from my ppf guy with xpel ultimate is around 10k. I had the entire front facia done and headlights for about 1200 dollars. Had the front portion of the rear fenders done for 1000. Worth it. A couple months prior I had my jlur diesel entirely wrapped in xpel stealth so I couldn't afford to get the entire truck wrapped. Overall, it's worth it if your wrap guy is good.

I’m sure you know this, but I have a 2500 with 35” tires and my tow rating stayed the same because I went with the “F” rated tire which has the same load rated index of my OE tires of 125. Of course I don’t have the 3500 (which I will be buying next year when mine is paid off) so it could be different than the 2500 I guess. Just throwing that out there in case anyone who watches this wasn’t aware.

@@wreckitmech306 I had the Toyo open country R/T on mine and got awesome mileage out of them. Close to 50k miles. However, when it was time to change them out, I started researching and researching because at that time, I couldn’t afford another $1600 or more for tires. After researching for almost a month, I found a tire that they say is the next up and coming Nitto/Toyo comparison tire and it was $900 for all 4. It’s the Kenda Klever R/T. At 4k miles, so far so good. I’m praying I didn’t make a mistake lol. But if I did, I’ll definitely go back to a nitto or Toyo.

    • @wreckitmech306

@@HumorousHearsay Thats not a bad idea. With Toyo and Nitto being the same manufacturer, I'm not worried between the 2. I did try the BF Goodrich K02's first and they just couldn't handle the weight of the truck un-loaded. I never felt comfortable with them to tow, tbh.
