  • My French bulldog just turned 5 years old! Today I'd like to answer you all with a quick update on our little potato! It's been nearly 3 years since I gave an update on Tortellino and a lot has changed. From his surgery to his allergies we've got a lot to talk about.

    French Bulldog 5 YEAR REVIEW | How is my frenchie doing?

    I had my first frenchie and i wasn’t aware of so many health issues with frenchies…. After having my own frenchie for awhile now he has no breathing problems, no allergies, no health issues i thought its normal…. I am “stunned” to know all these issues they have after watching this video. I was telling anyone who spoke to me about getting one i said would totally recommend!
    He is the “easiest dog” i have ever taken care of. He sleeps lots, eats well, is never pissed, and always happy with all dogs and people, pees and poops on time. He also doesnt shed unless when i shower him and cleaning him is so easy with a warm towel and dry shampoo. I wonder if he is a frenchie now! 😅

    Thanks for the video, Tony. Tortellino is adorable. I've done a lot of research on these dogs; the BOAS, IVDD, and allergy issues are horrendous. No animal should struggle to breathe. I would love to get one of these dogs, but honestly, I don't think I could because of these health issues and the backyard breeders who are only in it for profit. It was refreshing to hear you talk about these issues with French bulldogs because they are not discussed enough. But Tortellino got his best humans because he is so very loved. Cheers!

    Thank you for your informative Frenchie videos. It is great to hear from a new Frenchie owners perspective.
    I especially appreciated your knowledge of how AKC standard does not necessarily mean a healthier pup. I cannot stress enough how important it is to find a breeder that knows the history of the lines they are breeding and actively works to improve the health and temperament. If the breeder actually cares they will search out females and males to introduce to their program that do not have the history of allergies, IVDD, hip dysplasia, skin problems, etc. These are all things to research prior to getting a Frenchie.
    I would like to add to the point that cross breeding is not necessarily any healthier. If breeding together two lines/breeds with different health problems you can end up with additional health issues rather than less, so again very important to know the history of the lines whether pedigreed or not and continue to choose to breed lines that do not have those concerns. There are quite a few responsible caring breeders out there trying to do the right thing so if looking to buy a Frenchie ask a lot of questions, get a health guarantee and take your time! Also there are a lot of scammers out there so be sure to meet them and the puppy in person or over a live video chat before sending any money!

    I'm so lucky, my frenchie breathes well (not bragging just throwing it out there that some frenchies dont require surgery to help with breathing). I'm so greatful. She does have some allergies though, she responds well to salmon grain free kibble. My dog also responds well to washing more regularly.
    I had no idea dogs could be allergic to cats! Thats so interesting! Your baby is beautiful and so lucky to have such a caring owner.

    Thank you, Tony for the videos about Tortolino. I just started to follow you before I got my baby Toby. I can say that Toby is similar to Tortolino. He will be 2 years this coming Dec 26 and is a very healthy dog. I was worried before he came to my house because I never had a Frenchie with me. Now I'm an expert. Sorry to hear what happened to you, and I hope you will find a new job soon

    It is SO TRULY sad how sick this breed (in general) really is. They'd be the perfect dog for me, I love their energy and attitude, plus they are small and don't need hours of exercise and grooming. Tortellino is among the cutest, most lovely dogs I have ever seen 🥰🥰 I've watched many TH-cam-Videos by owners who said like you, Tony, they do not recommend this breed to anyone, because of the health-issues. My only hope is the aspirations of breeders who are trying to make the Frenchies more healthy by crossbreeding. But I guess I have to wait another ten years, before there is real change in the breed. Thank you so much for sharing Tortellino!

    I'm getting older, kids have left home, have been looking to get a dog. Frenchies looked cute and adorable and lovable, good size for an indoor dog. Then I started researching them. Good grief, I just want a dog, not a project. I just finished raising kids. Don't need any more - especially not a high maintenance one with all sorts of special needs. Think I'll pass on this breed.

      If you treat the dog like a dog and not a child they would be ok. If they run around frequently they will not have hip issues. If you feed them proper food they will no have allergies, etc. I have 3 frenchies and they are normal. The only “care” is to put cream on their nose so it doesn’t dry out

    I have a chocolate lab with allergies and he’s been on apoquel for years and it has greatly improved his quality of life. Also, the one allergen that really impacted him is storage mites - which are found in EVERY brand of kibble. You can buy the highest quality of kibble and they all have these microscopic mites living in them. The only thing that worked for me is to take him off of kibble and make his food from scratch. It was a game changer - the itching and ear infections stopped within weeks.

    I'm genuinely curious if their allergies aren't a complication of birth via c section. I know not all health issues transcribe via species but we know that humans that are born via c section are generally more prone to allergies, ear, and yeast infections due to a lack of bacterial diversity that would normally be inoculated during birth. I have been really curious about it, and I given my French fry whole unsweetened yogurt as a pup which I'm sure isn't a cure or anything but I've always wondered if a healthier flora would translate to better allergies, skin. So far I haven't had issues with either. I guess we shall see what happens.

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s actually a very interesting thought. I was told by a few vets it’s because of their skin is missing a protective derma layer that most dogs have for preventing allergen absorption. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the typical birth via c section doesn’t compound that genetic defect.

    Great video, lots of good info for those unaware. I work for a veterinary surgeon and we see these guys all the time for their breathing and broken elbows (big confirmation problem). But dogs are omnivores now not obligate carnivores. And please nobody feed their dog grain free diets unless your dog has been extensively tested to show an issue with grain. Orberwise, good job!

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! +1 grain free diets are a last resort. Since I posted this video our own dog has been on an HP diet based on soy protein, but it does supplement Methionine which I have read is necessary for a complete protein outside of meat consumption.

    I read online that getting a cross breed is alot more healthy. Saying that I had a frenchie x pug years ago..she looked like a pure frenchie but she started getting terrible allergies when she was 4 years old ...she ended up on steroids but it was costly trying to help her and change foods etc ..the vet said she could have been allergic to literally anything.

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you have a cross breed that isn’t one of the existing genetics it’s good. Something like terrier tends to yield a healthier bulldog from what I’ve seen.

      @@TonyCassara Out of interest Tony ...how old was your frenchie when they started getting allergies? I have a 10 month old and so far so good, but like I said with my previous frenchie hers started around 4 years old. The biggest thing with her was trying different methods to stop the itching. She would itch her ears and they would fill with blood ..which meant she had to have them stitched...it was a heartbreaking journey tbh as her owner ..she was the baby of the family and we spent so much money trying to help. She lived till she was 10. Miss her everyday

      I would definitely say to anyone looking to getting a frenchie to do some research beforehand ...its not just the cost it's the worry you have when they have issues.

    Before having a french bulldog, pet owners need to consider their health issues which are not easy to be handled, they have breathing issue (they snore loudly when sleeping), back pain issue (Cannot walk on staircase), disgestive system allergy (always keep farting a lot or easily diarhea), separation anxiety (which may incur the cost of having pet sitters if you need to go out for long), also be aware to clean their wrinkles, their ears carefully and make sure you have given enough walking time and playing time with your frenchies, as they can be destroying if they do not have enough exercise.

    Generally, very good information. However, I would like to point out one huge mistake.
    Having done some research, I have found that dogs are not obligate carnivores.
    I have a dog that seemed to be allergic to everything, swapped to an anti allergen plant based diet and the problems she had for 5 years are all gone.
    I appreciate these are your opinions, however you made that one sound very factual whist it is incorrect.

    • @TonyCassara
      @TonyCassara  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re right and I’ve since learned that I was mistaken on that point. They are not obligate carnivores BUT if they’re eating a vegetable based diet then the amino acid methionine has to be supplemented. Basically if you buy a big name brand kibble like Royal Canin it will be fine. If you make the food at home, your dog could get very sick. That last part is true either way despite eating meat or not. But more likely to be true with vegan based diet.

    It is a shame that you make such damning comments just because you chose a poor breeder and got a French Bulldog with issues. Maybe you should have put more energy in research PRIOR to getting the dog. Sorry for your luck, but writing off a breed because of your bad experience is childish. There are plenty of people with positive experiences over decades and decades. Millennials always believe that their experience is the pinnacle of belief and everyone else should recognize it as such.
    In summation...get a better dog next time. It is on you, be smarter.
