My thought process was something along the lines of: "Hang on why isn't he sanding it firs... ooooo, that's so pretty... hang on, why isn't he using varnish why is he using epox... oooooo, that's so pretty... hang on, those chess pieces look a bit rough, what's he doing with that aceto... ooooo, that's so pretty!" Gosh that was gorgeous.

I am still in awe of the acetone trick, that was mind-blowing to me and I can't wait to utilize that and especially give it as advice to a friend who has a printer, thanks for the great content

When the red pieces rewinded and became blue, that was pretty darn cool. The acetone for glossing the pieces was SUPER impressive. I'm going to get this coffee going too because that sounds like a great deal! Top notch and way to expand into 3D printing.

Indeed! Impressive use of Stop-Motion. I wouldn't have the patience for it, considering you had to stop and move the printer head every time.

@@justincarawan-carawanco.pu1639 To be honest if you're not completely green in some coding you could automate it pretty easily. Writing some script that would after every or some layers of the print just move the head to some position and give a signal to take a photo wouldn't be hard.

This was amazing!
Though "there's no sandblast, no pouder paint, so no cool", and I was never so wrong.
Also, very cool the acetone part. It realy gave a nice glow to the pieces.
using acetone to smooth out the 3D prints...genius! that was a great trick, i never thought of something like that. I always heat it in a little bakers oven. but if you dont pay close attention it will ruin the part

I really like the result of your restoration and add myself to the comment of why you didn't seal the bottom part.
I imagine the results vary wildly based on the type of plastic used.
acetone is a solvant for ABS which he used for printing so the surface melted and when acetone evaporated, the ABS returned strong again... you can fix some ABS pieces with ABS disolved into acetone (like some car bumpers) but the fan trick is very smart fort smoothing printed stuffs... of course, you must check first that the fan itself isn't made of ABS too and avoid any fire around as acetone fumes are very flammable..

Yea the acetone smoothing of ABS is pretty well known in 3d printing communities. What I would like to know is what black magic did he use to print multiple things in ABS without an enclosure, and still get ZERO warping on any of them...
@@Jethro.Maloku-le.Rey.Kalsitran The fan has to be a brushless type (all computer fans are), it must not be a brushed one.
Then the setup would still smooth the pieces, but by melting them in the ensuing inferno.

Be warned it only works with ABS prints which are alone a pain in the ass to produce unless you have a printer enclosure.
I recommend printing something single and small to test first

I know it as "Ghosting the Bottle" - my dad always did it with empty spirit (alcoholic) bottles. Trick was to warm it up first, roll the bottle a lot.
this has got to be my favorite restoration video out of all of them. The camera angles, the slow motions and repeats, the 3D printing part has to be my favorite part of the video it is so good, you really outdid yourself this is incredible!
I recently found your channel and have been going through your backlog. I put off watching this video because I thought it would be one of the less interesting ones. Boy, was I wrong! I was mesmerized from start to finish. Awesome craftsmanship, great editing. You are a true artist, friend. And I love that there's no music or talk, just restoration ASMR.
Out of ALL the restoration’s on TH-cam, antique’s to everyday object, you my friend are on a next level, other TH-camrs are grate you are in the LEGENDARY status, keep up the amazing work.
Good job on the restoration! Only complaint: When playing, the bottom right square of the board is white for each player, so you need to rotate the board 90 degrees.

I never played chess nor do I know how but I too enjoy seeing imaginative chess pieces. Especially if they're kinda weird like green vs. purple or something.

You should seal the bottom with something, wax, finishing stain, a oil that hardens, just something otherwise its subject to absorbing moisture and warping! Great vid btw love seeing you expand on your projects materials!
When will the makers of sanders start using standard size holes to fit standard vacuum cleaners which most of us use, without us having to buy couplers or using tape as you did. Great video as always.

Quite a bit of 3D prints I make for people are just that, conversion pieces to hook up vacuums to woodworking tools
Alright, I only started printing back in may. Had many ups and downs. Jams. Bad schematics. Solid print jobs. Everything. I saw this video and immediately thought about all of the possibilities I hadn’t yet thought about. Found the chess pieces on Thingiverse, trusted in printing the Queen without supports, and it was a solid print. Can’t wait to get all of the pieces printed in two colors, and go to an antique shop and refurbish a chess board. Thanks for sharing! Oh, and the acetone bit was amazing!

Now those were some of the best looking chess pieces I have seen in a while. The colors looked great and shine beautifully.

I loved everything except the color of the chess pieces.
I kinda want it to be light and dark tbh. The blue becomes lighter and turns to sky blue and red will become darked and turn into maroon/ crimson. But that's his/ her chess set.

This is your first video I have seen and wow. I have never seen a more creative and effective solution to smoothing out 3d printed parts. I've used acetone and sandpaper and few other tricks, but that's by far the best way I've ever seen to smooth out a print. I can't wait to try it.

If I were to do this, I’d make black and white pieces, or anything that isn’t blue and red tbh, and use some small bearings in each to weigh them down.

My thoughts exactly! There is this really long and thin "probe lens" (there are TH-cam videos on it) - I suspect that was what was used to get through the bottle neck.
