And then the combined might of Humanity and the League pushed back the Dilgar, destroyed their military and confined them to their home system which of course led to the extinction of the Dilgar.

If I remember right from RPG and novels (granted canonicity is somewhat debated) Dilgars were technologically more advanced than Earth Alliance and the league, but not overwhelmingly so as say Minbari or Centauri.
They also had far, far smaller military fleet than Earth Alliance and some members to the league. While there's lot of variables with the league races (Drazi and Brakiri basically are in "can hold their own"-stage while for example Gaim and Pak'ma'ra's fleet capabilities are non-existant) Earth had sizable military and proper infastructure to support it.
Basically one battle ended with Dilgar bringing 120 ships, while Earth Alliance brought over 600. That basically set the tone of Earth's attitudes....which unfortunately bit them in the ass when they went up against someone who could not only surpass them technologically, but also had industrial sector to match them.

Wait... am I seeing it correctly on the map that their home system is called Omelas? That's actually a really nice reference.
Also, isn't it highly implied that the Dilgar had secret support from the Shadows? A lot about their philosophy, their methods, etc. almost screams Shadow influence.

The Dilgar weren't the great threat everyone made them out to be. The League just sucked and Earth's always prepared to run into SOME aggressive alien race. Just look at our movies. Stuff like Independence Day and War of the Worlds were probably apart of Earth Force training.

    • @girlgarde

Yeah, Humanity in the B5 universe went out into space expecting to run into at least SOME hostile races and prepared accordingly.

I read a post by JMS somewhere, where he stated that the Dilgar worked with some of the dark agents of the Shadows while the Shadows were still dormant, and that's one reason why they got their hands on some powerful technology - he even hinted that Deathwalker was probably the one who provided the poison used on Kosh in the pilot episode, since the Shadows would know how to poison a Vorlon and she was being sheltered by the Windswords at the time, thus she could give them the information, just as she also created nasty weapons for them during the Earth/Minbari war.

I am 'thread jacking' this: a while back, a fan fic that combined the B5 universe with the 'Freespace' game universe==it's the latter stages of the Earth Minbari War and of course, humanity is on the back foot (though humans can still do ECM and use missiles and rail guns against the Minbari it's still semi suicidal to fight 'em); anyway, a rift develops during one of the battles and thru the rift comes The GTVA. Now all this activity attracts some 'first ones' and it also attracts the attention of some 'Eldritch Aliens in Red and Black Ships' --sadly the story stopped being updated a couple of years ago==I was curious to see how it'd turn out.

I would say that the Dilgar weren't as powerful as people may think. The Dilgar technology was on par with perhaps the Narn or Centauri with Military numbers that possibly were a match as well. I mean Earth beat the Dilgar basically using weapons technology they had purchased from the Centauri and perhaps some of the non-aligned worlds. The one thing Earth ultimately had that the non-aligned worlds didn't were numbers and an industrial advantage.

The Centauri would have rolled the Dilgar and Earth. The only known younger race that the Centauri feared was the Minbari

GAWDS! How ugly those Mongoose ships are. The Green hulled pincers were much better looking. AOG got it right.
And yes...the bolter weaponry...the particle pulse weapons were Dilgar tech. Bolters fired a big pulse energy...a big "fist" and pulsars fired smaller clusters of energy pulses. Ea pistols..Starfighter guns and ubiquitous pulse cannons are derived from them. The Dilgar War was also how Earth became a major power in the B5 universe.

I'm not sure why they didn't just move planets... all these scifi shows showing planets being destroyed due to supernova but they have ships... surely the Dilgar had allies who could have assisted.

The Dilgar figured that the other races would just take advantage of the Dilgar's upcoming weakness. Result is that all Dilgar currency would be worthless and the Dilgar would have to trade everything they had in order to get access to another world. Plus think about how many billions of people would need to be moved, and how much infrastructure would be needed at the destination.

My question is how did a race so powerful enough to "conquer huge portions of the known galaxy" didn't have enough science to notice that their sun was about to go supernova, which typically takes place over hundreds of thousands of years, if not millions of years?
Human, for example in the 20th century, have enough science to estimate that our sun will go nova (not supernova) in roughly 5-6 billion years, but the sun will boil our oceans away about a billion years before that... and we still can't colonize our moon.

    • @girlgarde
      @girlgarde ปีที่แล้ว +1

The shift in their home star was a sudden thing I think that could've happened naturally or perhaps by the Drakh to drive the Dilgar to lash out violently at the other races for territory and thin out the number of races that would aid the Minbari in the upcoming Shadow War.
