  • Thanks to ‪@LordBalvin‬ making a great tweet about Devolver Digital and Deepknight (one of Dead Cells creators) new game Tenjutsu, i HAD to share the tweet with yall. Not only is it great comedy but also makes you think about how indie (especially Roguelike) games get a bad rap even just from their trailers.

Honestly speaking, this is an issue that goes back pretty much since 3D games were made. It genuinely doesn't matter what the actual game looks like, so long as its not pixel art in any degree. For some people, pixel stuff, no matter how detailed or undetailed it might be, is a mark against it and thus its crap. This isn't really uncommon, and happens with a lot of games. Hell, you'll see people even bash on art styles as well. I guarantee that theres people even bashing the anime aesthetic too. Then theres the fact that some people just hate rogue likes in general. They just managed to hit on the two things a lot of people are vocal about disliking, but those people also aren't the ones who will be buying it regardless.

Must be under a rock cause I've rarely seen AAA just purely do well in the first place.
You can't say AAA companies are universally in a good spot if it's only a handful of that are not only timely with releases but release good and fun games.
In square and bandai's case so hit or miss it isn't even funny. Then you have the obvious rampant greed ones that barely do much but want you to shell out for buy in and mtx. Then the ones that take years to remind you they exist. Let's not even discuss boring ones.
Only ones I can think of off the top being Capcom and Nintendo for timely, consistently good, and depending on taste fun releases. I want to be biased and say fromsoft but fear they won't have anything for a few years. There are more good but again handful.
Indies do not have to be 24/7/52 experiences, they just have to break out unlike AAA where they need a large value to break even. It's not sustainable and some of them realized it. AAA is dying only a few can make it work without too much bs shoved onto customers.

I mean, optimization takes time, and often, unless you let things get egregious, optimization doesn’t sell. How many people will go out of their way to buy a game that’s only a few hundred kB vs. a game that’s a few dozen MB? How many people will go out of their way to buy a game that’s a few dozen MB vs. a game that’s a GB.
As long as it runs fine, most consumers literally give no fucks. Data storage is cheap enough these days that you’re not needing to optimize to the same degree, because optimization originally came from physical distribution-based data storage limits. How much can you fit on a CD-ROM. How much can you fit on . Etc. Digital distribution eliminated this constraint, and so developers can allocate efforts elsewhere now that they don’t have to ensure that their game fits into the physical media produced by their distributor’s factories. And developers are disincentivized from going for physical distribution too, because it’s just *cheaper*.
It’s no wonder why games aren’t as ruthlessly optimized for size anymore. The constraints are gone and the tech that imposed them (physical distribution) is an unnecessary expense, even discounting the costs of optimizing a game to that point.

If your game doesnt look like don't starve, and they make you a trailer that looks like dont starve, then you just made a speedrun of ubisoft marketing.

They are fun. And not disappointing because they are shown as they are in the trailers.
Its just disappointing that. The stylized anime in the trailer turns out to be a fake one and not an actual anime fighting game but a drop down pixel art. The art trailer is so different from the game art thats disappointing.

I kinda get where those people are coming from, the pixel art aesthetic is a tad overused in the indie scene. But hell dude, the gameplay is the most important part, if that isn't enjoyable, it doesn't really matter how good a game looks, you can have the most amazing graphics, if what you are playing barely feels like a game (too many cutscenes, little in gameplay), it just isn't going to be as fun, or at least that's my experience with it all.

The main thing is the difference between the trailer art and real gameplay is so large that it feels like false advertising.
Games like Have A Nice Death and Crowsworn feel right on the money because the hand-drawn animation of the trailer and the gameplay are far closer to one another.
If you present a beautifully designed animated trailer with a cel-shaded 3D trailer but present pixel art roguelike for the gameplay, of course, some people will feel lied to. Make a pixel art roguelike trailer next time.
With things like this, I'm mainly left thinking: "Can we have an animated short film instead?"

    • @Sandstimes

Lied to?? There's no lie, they put extra effort to hire animators to make their promotional material as good as possible, they showed the gameplay, theres no "lie" here just people who dont personally like the style and are taking it out on the devs for making something not catered to them. I for one infinitely prefer advertisements like this over the ai generated "only 200 iq can solve this" slop that is so common lately. The advertisement is a reflection of their passion for the world and game they created, its a testament to its artistic integrity, not against it. Imagine saying the castlevania show is falsely advertising the games because the art style is different lol

A good example of good pixel art is stuff like: the messenger (especially after unlocking a certain game changing function after the delivering the scroll.), blasphemous, enter the gungeon, SANABI, Mother Russia bleeds, and katana zero. In my experience, the crowd thats usually very vocal about pixel art being bad tend to be the ones who think the only style should be next gen realism pushing to make the game the prettiest it can be. They also have a weird habit of being younger, since they grew up with that sort of stuff as their norm. Then you also have the crowd who don't 'get' roguelikes/lites. It's not about pixel art as a graphical style in comparison to pretty triple-A releases (there's lots of merit in pixel art that is commonly appreciated), but more the fact that indie games have began to spiral downwards in terms of creativity. With the success of certain indie games, creatively bankrupt indie developers who take inspiration from other indie games and widely recognized pop-culture see an incentive for churning out games that are practically identical from a gameplay perspective (one of the clearest examples of this phenomenon is Stardew Valley). Creativity has plummeted and tens of indie "2D pixel-art retro-inspired roguelike beat-em-slash-em-ups/deck builders" that play the same are released daily on Steam. There are cases of innovation and new offshoots of the genre being released, but those are few and far between, I feel. That and adding a slight twist with the formulaic "this game meets that game/this game, but..." doesn't contribute anything. These derivative indie releases enjoy their time in the limelight and fade from public consciousness as people move back to playing those that perfected the genre.
The "not playing anything at all" as you put it is sort of a strange point. I'd wager that the people who commented under the trailer on Twitter have no doubt played roguelikes before and enjoyed them seeing the sheer popularity some releases have garnered. I fall into the camp who saw the trailer and shrugged: "I've basically seen and played this game before, so why should I bother?"; I played roguelikes, loved them dearly, got my fill, and don't really see any point in playing a rehash of something that is already overdone. It's perhaps for this oversaturation that I've fallen out with gaming as of late, or perhaps it's just a part of growing up and finding new thrilling things to embark on. I stopped following game shows - Fumito Ueda *probably* won't announce anything; Death Stranding 2 feels like a phoned in, strange offshoot of a series that had already reached a more than satisfying ending; triple-A games suck *yap* *yap* *blah* blah*; and a majority of the indie games fall into the "cozy", "roguelike", "PS1-inspired horror" or "Earthbound-inspired RPG about depression" categories. In spite of the cool stylized graphics or the smearing of pixels, it all feels *bland* from a design point of view. But I digress.
I recently picked up Panzer Dragoon Saga again; what a wonderful little RPG! Super Lone Survivor is a really neat rerelease of an indie horror game that existed in an environment where there weren't that many indie horror games. I'm still trying to beat Ikaruga on normal difficulty. I'm hell-bent on getting through the D trilogy, or playing the Japanese-only "Real Sound: Kaze no Regret" with a printed translated script at my side. Braid also got a rerelease! I really ought to play Lifeline again. Or L.O.L: Lack of Love! Or Shenmue! Booting up Mappy always makes me smile. Variety gives spice to life, and overdone roguelikes take.

There still are some games that have that unique style like Hades/Hades II has a very distinct art style. It feels like Indy games are starting to get cookie cutter and that makes me sad. Also my backlog of roguelites absolutely does not help. I feel roguelites have become the BR of the Indy scene. Everyone is making one and a lot of them are not distinct enough in style and gameplay for me. I do wish more people were honest about this instead of making it a AAA vs Indy issue because it isn’t. Seriously, most of the characters didn't even get 2 extra pixels to represent the EYES, what even is this? I played a lot of games in pixel art style, drew a couple of sprites myself, and quality of this game just looks dire

    • @pixavier9746
      @pixavier9746 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

Quality of pixel art doesnt have anything to do with the style of the pixel art. Just by the trailers the pixel art looks incredible, not for the detail, but for the smooth animations, seriusly, is requires a LOT of hardwork to make pixel art animations that look so fluid, because is not just "drawing a couple of sprites", is drawing tons of very similar sprites but with small differences to make the illusion of movement while keeping the form and look of the characters.
Is the same as any good stop motion or drawed animation, the smoother it looks, the higher amount of frames that you need to manually make... One by one... Is not as easy as you think, and the result is not dire as you named it.
Edit: My point is that the style of pixel art may differ a lot from game to game, but that doesnt represent quality on his own. Games like Celeste or Loop Hero have very simple or old/retro looks, like characters not having eyes or being a couple of colored pixels in a screen, but they still have their own charisma and their respective styles work for their respectives games, which is what really matters.

As you pointed out, two of the most popular games of the last handful of years have had multiple animated trailers ie Vampire Survivors & Dead Cells and I doubt people would consider those games to be lying about what they are simply because they put out a handful of eye catching animated ads. Yeah the anime art style in Tenjutsu’s trailer looked cool but I’m not sure what people think indie game development is to expect the game proper to look exactly like it. These are small studios who often spend their limited resources on games that are low demand performance wise but have extremely tight fundamentals & need to spare some of their budget to market themselves in the vast ocean of games out here. I at least have respect for a marketing push that actually includes gameplay of the game in question like Tenjutsu when so many other companies particularly in the AAA space hide their own games’ ultimate quality behind a slew of cinematic trailers & cagey crumbs about what it is actually like to play.

Since almost all of them are pixel art, they barely have any identity, their only differences being things like the visual effects and whether they try to be 8 or 16 bits.
The few who try something new don't get as much attention as they deserve: Ultrakill is great but you don't see many people talking about it in the same way they talk about other indies; Cave Story, a game that could be considered the reason why indie games exist, It doesn't have a fraction of the recognition that Hollow Knight does (although this is a good thing because then it can continue to be a niche game)

They showed a really cool ass trailer but when they switched to gameplay, it was meh. And that's coming from someone who adores Dead Cells and generally pixel/2D games.
Like the gameplay doesn't even compare to what they originally showed.

Same thing with Carrion and My friend Pedro. They all have animated trailers, but the games have their own amazing style.

For example, when My friend Pedro baited and switched, nobody cared because the art style looked exactly like the animated trailer, just 3D.

I think if the game uses an actual non-pixel art 2d sprite such as per say how Street of Rage 4 looks people wouldn't complain much.
Or at the very least if the devs are going for pixel art, they could've made it more high fidelity in terms of style so the character design can be seen. Example of this would be per say Diablo 1 and 2? Those games are pixelated af but the actual character design can still be seen with decent amount of details.
The main problem for many seems to be expectations, the trailer make the game looks like it have anime esque style but the gameplay is pixel art. Which is a pretty big transition from trailer to gameplay.

I don't know why so many people are stuck on the idea that the disappointment comes from it being pixel art and that people finds pixel art bad no matter what
At least for me the disappointment comes from the lost hope of having an indie game with an original art style, something that is totally possible
Pixel art is great, but always holding to it doesn't make indie games that different from AAA games and their realistic graphics

BoI, EtG, Noita, Dead Cells, and now this game.
These are just games that I can list from the top of my head that were roguelikes with a retro or pixelated aesthetic.
Granted, they are good games - but I honestly don't blame people for being tired of it. Pixel or hand-drawn graphics combined with a metroidvania or roguelike is pretty much the easiest way to get recognized as an indie game. Seems like at the very least every few popular indie games are some combination of that, and there's only so much of that you can take before you start itching for something more unique. This is why a game like Don't Starve lasted so long and was so popular, as it had its own identity.

While you're trying to argue if it is played on a 3d plane, which no, it's not, I'm very obviously stating it shouldn't be in a list of pixel art games. Would you consider Hades a 'pixel art' game? I mean, once again, it doesn't even use a pixel art shader like Dead Cells, it uses hand-painted textures with a studio-specific illuminated shader.
