    Being a full time mechanic and DIY carpenter and always working with fractions, you made it much easier. I'm auto didactic and have taught myself many things that I chose to learn. Math plays a large part of everything I've dove into. And you thanks to you ,it's easier for a seventy year old guy. I would have enjoyed math a lot more if it was taught the way you teach.
    Excellent explanation sir.

      Because this is usually something that doesn't need teaching, and if you do enough maths, you will have your way of doing fractiom multiplication in your head quickly

    • @francisluglio6611
      @francisluglio6611 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because he's telling you 2+2. This is just how fractions work. It's not a trick. People who can understand math see it for what it obviously is

      @@251rmartin I'd like to think that it's just that it has to do with how we all perceive things. As in, when they see the equation they're noticing things about them but not the useful parts and while I'm good at math, there's things that I'm not seeing that they are. But maybe we could package the information in a certain way to them until they have a trained eye. Not that everyone is meant to be good at math. It seems like I'm not meant to be an artist but maybe someone could explain how they look at 3D objects and see all the right viewing angles to get the image on to paper.

    • @francisluglio6611
      @francisluglio6611 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@251rmartin I don't even think of multiplication and division differently. And I most certainly don't care to memorize the "quotient rule" of calculus as we could simply use the product rule and negative exponents to the same effect. To me, it was always obvious why multiplication and division are equals and why it's best that they come before addition/subtraction but I don't know if I can explain it. So maybe some people need to memorize that hierarchy simply because the visualization of technicalities is harder to hold on to.
      It seems like a lot of people are good at math when they're under the illusion that they're not doing any. For example, almost anyone would count the amount of full cans they have before adding how much is in the can they already opened. That's multiplying then adding. Perhaps they don't have to hold on to the visual because it's physically rendered for them

    • @francisluglio6611
      @francisluglio6611 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@251rmartin I don't know if you noticed but I said, "...it was always obvious to me why it... it is BEST that [multiplication and division] come before addition and subtraction...". I am aware that it's just a convention.
      While we're on the topic I want to say that it would be nice if people understood math well enough to stop acting like credit cards expand their budget. Not knowing math is expensive. So while we can only ask people to have so much skill, we should at least have them try their best to get it right.
      I do partially blame the way math is taught. I mentioned the quotient rule because it's an example of educators teaching the students to evade the intuition.

    It's funny because it's just a restatement of what's OBVIOUS, yet...because we use different words we don't SEE that it's obvious. x/y OF c is actually x/y TIMES c. Interestingly, this works for fractions: 1/3 of 2/5 = 2/15. Of COURSE you know how to multiply fractions, but if somebody put an "of" in there, most people would (at least initially) be a bit puzzled about how to proceed.

    After watching a few of your videos I come to realize that I went to a very good school as this is exactly how I was touch to do fractions. I think 90% of the tricks you have shown are the ones how I learned it at school. Simple is usually better and elegant...
    But I have to admit that we had a lot of math at my school. I think at least 1/3 of each day consisted of math classes up to the 6th grade. The schools philosophy was that math and reading/writing skills are the most important skills that anyone should do well. If you can do the basics (additions, subtractions, multiplications, divisions and fractions) well and fast, they serve as building blocks for the more advanced math topics. Algebra, Math, physics were topics that I excelled at which came in handy in trade school where I became a licensed electrician and later were able to get my bachelor degree in computer science...
