This One Scene From Inside Out 2 Calls Out Disney (and other Media Companies)

- Inside Out, both the first and second film, is really good at making metaphors with how the mind works; and it's one of my favorite aspects of the franchise. But the sequel takes it further by including one scene that can have multiple meanings depending on how you see, and each interpretation is just as valid as others.

EXACTLYYYY im shocked nobody was pointing out how this scene might replicate the problems with animation workplaces, especially DISNEY
The only thing I didn't like about the scene, and this is a nitpick... The mind person breaking the pencil, which is commonly used on Twitter by AI bros to talk about why AI is better than traditional media.
funny bc it was made by Disney/Pixar
@@arandomguyscrolling2023also Disney hasn’t had anything to do with it
That's kinda hypocritical
@@Yourfat247they own Pixar and somewhat fund it/benefit from it
It always SENDS ME the way Anxiety gets confused about all the positive imagination ideas and stops mid-way in her dialogue with the -. _ .- face when she realizes Joy is the culprit from how obviously Joy-centric it is
When I saw that in the theatre I started giggling
T- T "Joyyyyyy..."
@@GedanJ”i know your in thereeeee”

GREAT VIDEO INSIDE OUT TWO MEDIA
Not me immediately whispering to the friend beside me, "Live footage of Mappa employees."
LOLLL cant stop laughinggg
LOOOLLL
broooo 😭
My friend did the exact same thing lol
So accurate
in the theatre I whispered to my sister "this scene is literally 1984"
No way! Me and my brother cracked up upon seeing this scene! 😂 Having read 1984, and seen the Apple Ad, we knew exactly what the writers were doing. It was the funniest scene in the film
i literally though the same thing. 😲
my friend and i were laughing so hard in the theater because of it 😭
Me too to my friends
jorjor wel
At 7:18 you can see a version of the distracted boyfriend meme in the top right
Holy moly
Never saw that before
😂
Nice find!
lol 😂 that’s funny lol 😂
ahahahah
My god
LETS FACKING GOOOOOO-
Im really surprised disney let this into the final product. Its a straight up criticism of their scummy business practice and mistreatment of creative workers
Disney executives don’t think about any kind of deeper meaning behind anything they’re responsible for so they prolly just saw the scene and didn’t notice it was a subtle cry for help
Imagine the backlash when people would have found out it was censored.
Wish could have been better
There fools and desperate
Its because they're untouchable, it doesn't matter how many times they do it. People say things but no action is done
I’m an animation student, when the scene came in, my mom just glanced slowly at me and I just said “yep, that’s gonna be me!”
I hope you were talking Joy lol💀
I hope you learning how to use Tooncrafter for your best future
MAPPA animators
It was also referenced in the part where they had to quickly pick Riley’s career(they had to pick a balloon} and they saw art teacher and I believe one of the emotions said “under appreciated” maybe this was all a way for them to show how much the art industry doesn’t appreciate and mistreats the people working for the industry.
yup
or teachers as a whole
Didn't they say underpaid for one of them?
@@coldspaghetti9372Yeah, but that one was for the chef career
And I think the same, sadly, the people who works on art doesn't get appreciated much
I saw the movie the other night with my friend and we agreed that this scene was basically the entire creative team holding up a “help me” sign like Wile E Coyote.
Wow, i've never even thought about how this scene portrays these executive issues within the animation industry. Good call!
I kinda knew they did
What I love about this scene is that Anger and Joy work together in imagination land to help the mind workers find courage to fight anxiety. Because what happens is they start a rebellion, and the fact that rebellion is something driven by the dual emotions of anger and joy is brilliant! You don't usually think of those two emotions working together or harmonizing at all, but in real life, when they do, they spark rebellion for a better, more idealistic future and I love how Pixar pointed this out
This is very insightful, thank you.
Good point. Anger provokes action while Joy makes it a positive thing for improvement.
It makes sense Pixar would do this. During an extreme deadline crunch for Toy Story 2, a man who worked at Pixar had to drop off his infant son at daycare before going to work. A few hours after getting to work, his wife (who also worked at Pixar) asked him if he dropped their son off. It turned out that he was so burnt out that he had left their son in the car in the middle of summer. The child survived, but Pixar took measures afterwards to prevent against burnout and maintain the health of their employees.
who was the man?
@@nxomiiig I don't know I read it in Creativity Inc by Ed Catmull (Pixar's founder), and he doesn't mention the man's identity.
@@filmfocusmind that makes sense that they wouldn't reveal anything lol, but damn that is horrifying
This same thing happened but to an Amazon worker, whose poor kid was not so lucky. She did not know the kid would decide to distract themself with the AC knobs, they turned it off, and overheated to death, because Amazon refuses its workers any sort of proper breaks, so she never had the chance to go check on her child. That poor woman then had to go to trial for murder for it. Amazon is a disgusting disgrace, and it's why I won't shop from them when I can avoid it.
@avosmash2121 totally agree !!! It's convenient but cruel.
I've never seen 1984 or the Apple commercial, so I just saw the scene as PIXAR calling out the unfair conditions of animators.
It made me laugh the second it started and I adore the scene. I'm happy I'm not the only one who noticed.
You said the same thing I thought
@@akganimationstudioproducti3779 😃😁
Pixar just became quite aware of how Disney is right now and I am all for it.

I love how this relates to that one Owl House scene where Luz calls out Disney(actually more than one scene)!
what part of owl house was that? cause i’ve watched the whole show and don’t remember that part.
Oh Crikey.
I know theres the "if we had time for 20 more adventures" one but what else

@@AroShadeWeaver idk that might be a stretch considering its a major plot device, but if its officially been confirmed then
My brother and I saw Inside Out 2 last week and we loved it. I personally loved it because I'm an adult and cartoons are my special interest. I love Disney animated movies and tv shows like Inside Out, Turning Red, The Owl House, Amphibia and The Ghost & Molly McGee because of their themes of found family, friendship and acceptance of being different from others. This scene in Inside Out 2 was amazing I do hope that there will be major changes in the animation industry so that creators will get the creative freedom they deserve and for me personally, I do hope someday that we will see The Owl House and The Ghost & Molly McGee again.
That is what I hate about Chris Stuckmann refusing to criticize Madame Web; he has a point in addressing the troubles with studio executives not giving their directors and writers enough creative freedom, but he also gives the film creators too much sympathy to realize that what makes Madame Web so bad is through some faults of their own, not just Sony butchering a potentially good storyline.
What about gravity falls? That was a goated show
Oh please, the owl house is just another woke show.
@@yasininn76 I know, I stopped watching it because it was woke
@@Meebboi "Woke" 🤓
Yeah, when that scene came up in my watch party (yes we bought 60 dollars of movie tickets), we all mutually agreed that it was a Mappa Studios moment.
Lol the mappa studio moment, i'm gonna borrow that.
My sister litteraly said that lmao.
7:18 Just notice background one of negative thought screen got boyfriend turned to the attractive girl meme 😂
This movie was so damn good. In my personal opinion, it’s the second best Pixar sequel, right after Toy Story 2. This studio is proving that they can still pump out masterpieces when the right people are involved.
In the first movie, Happiness tasks Fear with theorizing the worst scenarios for Riley's first day of school.
Why does Anxiety exist if Fear was already responsible for worrying Riley?
Anxiety said she plans for stuff later on. While fear catastrophically the first day of school. Anxiety is the worries about one's social life in the future after that day. All the ways in which things go wrong. Not just what goes wrong now, but all the bad consequences that will arise in the future and to fret over these things constantly.
In short the difference between an immediate threat over a future threat
Fear acts toward solid immediate threat (like alligators in front of you, which is already happening )
Anxiety acts towards future threats that may happen ( which may not even happen)
The lower IQ one animal gets, the harder for it to have anxiety, because it requires imagination to picture threats that didn’t happen yet.
fear is more of an instinctual response while anxiety takes control of things that may or may not happen.
that was just a one time thing. did Fear even do it many times? no, he only did that ONCE, and he only did that because Joy told him.
happiness?
When I saw Inside Out 2 I immediately thought of how similar this scene is to 1984. The cubicles match. The equipment looks very similar even though the speakwrite is very different from the equipment in Inside Out 2. Anxiety is the spitting image of Big Brother on the Telescreen. I am a book nerd so when you said this I cheered😂. Very well done on the video!
I laughed so much at this scene, but then I remembered that it was a funny joke, but an unfortunate, real situation at working environments...
i noticed this the first time in theaters. i joked to my friend (who was watching it with me) "is disney trying to say something?" i hope they get better, i really do.
Me too
The scene with the anxiety controls them to say every possible bad situation is so true. One time I was thinking some negative things that i thought would happen and then I thought a happy thought and all my thoughts turned happy
That's what happened when you don't have crippling anxiety. Don't use that personal experience to give advice to anyone who has it

We need more of this creative writing. ;)
So Disney calls themselves out
Neat
Disney called themselves most of the times out. Enchanted, Wish, this.

The Distracted Boyfriend
0:50 for me it reminded me of 1984 with that big screen
It might seem crazy what in bout to say
I thought it was a brilliant move, GENIUS just like you said, how Anxiety is the BIG BROTHER (Big Sister in this case?), the chair been thrown at the screen like if it was the hammer, it's also a nice homage to the most famous and most important ad ever (should be in the Library of Congress) especially considering how important Steve Jobs was for the history of Pixar, I wish he was alive to see this. Now I'm wondering if Ridley Scott saw Inside Out 2, what did he thought about this scene?🤔
Xactly!
As a new professional animator, this scene made me feel so validated. I'm glad people are finally speaking out about how insane some of our work practices are. Here's hoping the industry improves itself in the future!
Bout time someone talks about this scene, I immediately got the reference when the chair was thrown at the screen
same
Anxiety is also kinda NUTS!
From where I'm standing, personal and deeply meaningful storytelling was partially what got Disney out of their slump pre-renaissance and got them to fire on all cylinders with classics like... well, there were a lot of classical films that they then burned out through mostly poorly made TV show compilations that they advertised as sequel movies to those exact same classics. Movies like Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and a whole load of other movies that were both made by Disney animators, or were made and produced under Disney, mostly came out of films like Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro (The Great Mouse Detective) and a whole slew of American films and animated works were inspired by either older material or from the creator's own personal lives. And seeing how much Disney slights everyone for having original, fun ideas and has been deliberately sabotaging creativity for easy profits, even among things they now consider classics within their own catalog, shows just how little faith Disney has in entertainment as a whole. Disney does not want anything that the company was mostly founded on, they only want the illusion of their "Disney Magic" just so they can handwave anything anyone says against them, and whenever someone doesn't fall for their branding and aggressive propaganda tactics? They immediately crush them with Legal Action and a huge amount of cash at their own fingertips. Disney enjoys being on top of the more than the things that brought them to where they are now, and eventually, when everyone turns on them because of just how scummy their behavior has been and after everyone finds out that Disney is one of the more historically insidiously abusive partners that would rather settle for mediocrity than fire on all cylinders 7 times out of 10, Disney will have nothing but A.I. to carry them to victory, and even then, after everyone has left Disney or the only people left are those who are willing and enabled to take risks for Disney, the leavers will create things better than the A.I. and the keepers will not work with A.I. nor the demands of the higher-ups to be the people who make the corporate slop to keep up with needing movies to sell.
After Disney is done from making almost everyone around them done with their nonsense, they'll realise how important it is to respect those who have ideas they want to share.
I noticed this reference, but I was surprised a huge Animation titan like Pixar had enough guts to do this considering their close ties to Disney.
How did i not notice this as an animator??
It sucks to live in a world where most modern pixar films finish last!
2:44 omg I just unlocked a deep memory of a reference to that ad in a mixels episode
The part where Riley “Wants” Joy is such a Pivotal Moment. Why? Because it showcases what emotions should actually do.
People should NOT be controlled by their Emotions, rather, People have the power to chose how they feel.
You Chose how to react to things, and you chose how to feel in situations.
woah, i thought this was a video from a 100k+ channel, congrats on the great quality!!
Funny thing when I first whatched the movie, in this scene I literally had that thought and that made filled with mixed feelings, I'm so happy that I was not the only one to noticed that
Sometimes I can’t sleep because I’m too excited for something
I said "hell yeah" out loud in the theaters when I realized this from that scene. The light boxes on the desks were a dead giveaway.
Perfect explanation... also if we get more bizarre scenes and characters, mainly referring to the whole absurd scene of the emotions being bottled up in the vault and introducing two hilarious spoof characters, that's what I crave. We need MORE of that, we need more Lance Slashblade and Bloofys in the Pixar, and animation as a whole, roster. 🌌
We need more TAWOG type stuff
@@chobies5383 I’ll be honest, I was typing out that same statement until I changed my mind. I was saying we need more things like “The Shippening” episode, where they show off absurdities constantly… we need more of that in animation in general, META ABSURDITY!
@@mremusica We need a Disgust x Lance spinoff show NOW!
@@cheesesnadwich815 HECK YES! 😂
Man that seen is powerful and it fit show well how Disney is nowadays
hopefully, Disney will learn from their mistakes and maybe continue some of their old shows like the Owl House Gravity Falls, minus Amphibia because it already ended on a good note, but spin off or a a conic or two wouldn't hurt (though if they continue The Ghost & Molly McGee, they'll have to retcon the season 2 finale as a dream or something), but it's very unlikely Disney will do that unless they have a new CEO
Agreed!
Gravity Falls, unlike The Owl House and The Ghost and Molly McGee, actually ended on the creator's terms. Alex intended the story to have two seasons only, and has no plans on continuing it anytime soon.
@@yeeyeeyeeye at least there is that The Book of Bill book coming out this month
The fact that Disney let this scene into the movie might be hope for the future.
bro explained IN FULL DETAIL WITH APPLES an obvious scene
This is also a reference from “1984” (1984)🧡
i thought i was the only one who actually thought of this, i was with my uncle and i told him lol
That scene was easily in the top 3 best scenes of the whole movie.
when i saw the scene i LITERALLY went "Ayo that's Mappa"
i made a joke about this scene with my friend saying "its the pixar animators calling for help"
Anybody else noticed her rainbow shirt has the 5 main colors of each emotion in the first movie and then orange right after (for anxiety)
All i could think of during this scene is "lmao 1984"
The way anxiety was honestly hit an emotional nerve for me.
I actually never saw this! This is actually amazing! The scene itself was really cool and a great metaphor, but when you look at it that way, it becomes better.
I got all the 1984 references on my first viewing in the theater!
Or, hear me out, the idea of rebellion in a large consumer media product sells. No need for 4D mind chess, it’s a scene about anxiety and mass media, with maybe a hint towards animation in specific. Way shorter than eight minutes
I love this scene from inside out 2 and your videos are amazing!
left-middle-bottom monitor shows the boyfriend meme with the imaginary boyfriend and riley at 0:46
I've had a moment similar to this scene as well.
It was February break in school, and it was Friday, so we almost had to go back.
I realized something. Something felt... incomplete.
I hadn't done any work on the project that was due the week we got back.
I started panicking quietly, I could not sleep.
Thinking of all the ways I could screw it up. The presentation, my voice...
It was 2 in the morning.
The only person who was awake was my dad, who works the night shift.
I called him, and he reassured me that it would be alright.
He would help me with the project and make sure I handed it in on time.
He acted as Joy did in the scene, presenting good things that could happen.
Eventually, all the bad thoughts were gone and I could sleep peacefully.
the project was due the week after we got back so yay that was all for nothing...
I was personally horrified by this scene because I saw it as disrespect towards hand drawn animation, which is what is normally made on animation discs, which is what the mind workers are using in this scene. I’ve even made 2 videos explaining what they are on my channel. However, this video made me see the scene in a different light.
The fact they went through *this* shows how Pixar differs from Disney, despite them being the same company, and I honestly think they nailed it here. 😅
omfg how did i not pick up on this at ALL bruh i just thought it was abt anxiety not letting her sleep with the scenarios lmaooo
sometimes subtlety even if its not even that subtle is lost on me 😭😭
Animators need to go on strike
Why
The whole country needs to go on strike.
2:07 tldr for the plot:
1984 takes place in a city where the whole dictatorship, "you must worship me" thing is taken to it's logical extreme. It actually popularised the idea of a dystopian future.
The part where Disgust says "Joy reality is a thing" I couldn't help but to laugh out loud since that's kinda how my brain goes... it makes a situation that possibly won't happen
It’s ironic that 1984 came out in 1984, during the Cold War and making fun of the Soviet union and United States.
Wait, so Riley’s imagination is made by animators, and her dreams are made by a film studio. Did I get that right?
7:18 Look at the scenario in the top right, I know it has nothing to do with what was mentioned in this video, but its a pretty cool reference.
This is officially the first comeback of Disney after Covid 19 and people has been screwing with companies slice it begun to happen
My favorite sceneeee
You can tell they got creative freedom when they put a meme in one of the TV 7:18
(Jnfgaming's comment pointed it out)
There’s a secret about inside out that bloopy is a reference to Micky mouse’s clubhouse
This were exactly my thoughts while watching this scene!!! My brother and I even thought that this scenario looked extremely specific.
The moment that one imagination artist with the hat and the beard got highlighted, I was like "yeah, that's a real guy, isn't it?" And it was indeed a tribute to a real animator who had passed away.
Woah… this gives the scene a whole new perspective.
I hate how Anxiety is the bad guy in this scene. She was just trying to help!
I think that the point of anxiety. she trying to help but takes control of Riley’s mind . It’s what anxiety does it’s trying to make a 20 step plan that it thinks it’s going to work sometimes it is sometimes it’s not .
“AUUUUGGHHH!!! ANIMATION IS SO HARD! People who do this for a living deserve more credit and respect!”
- Lord Hater , The Greatest In The Galaxy
During that scene in the theater, I was very tempted to yell out “EAT THE GOVERNMENT!!!” Idk, just gave those vibes
“Glass animals, I knot you’re in there”
Big anxiety is watching you
People train for years to be artists only to get paid peanuts
Disney just basically started their redemption arc
The more creativity there is the better the movie/show will be
it's the Macintosh ad parody
Huh I never noticed this, TBH I don’t think Disney’s higher-ups did either.
It was Orwell's underlying belief that capitalism is bad and socialism is good that becomes an underlying theme in his novel, 1984.
Basically the "Free Fortnite" ad from 2020😭
I never thought I’d see the day where Inside Out 2 would reference an apple commercial
When I watched this scene I immediately thought to the writers/animation strike. I’m glad movies and shows are showing ways to call out big companies
When I saw this scene I immediately thought of 1984 and the strugglers of animators 😭
7:13 did anyone see the meme template in the top right???
The scene when Anxiety’s image-tree of Riley fully forms and the only thing is can say is “I’m not good enough” absolutely drove me to tears in the theater. I’ve let anxiety take the wheel for years because it was how I got things done, because I was afraid of what would happen if I got things done. My image-tree only ever tells me I’m not good enough. It hurt to see that on screen. Good writing.
And here I was thinking about it as a good description of my own brain, and a visual tool for what I should do to change that. How selfish of me to try to relate to that scene, despite also working in an overworked under appreciated job (hospital lab microbiologist).
7:17 is that the "man looking at the wrong woman" meme format in the top right ?
YEAH IT IS OMG
I thought this was a mockery from Disney like "Haha you can only animate your fantasy, that's not really gonna happen."
2:22 I would've gotten this more if Brick in the Wall was mentioned lol. Mostly kidding, different environment, but similar situation, the lack of individuality, freedom, and taking control of a large body of people... in this case of Inside Out 2, quite literally and pun not intended, but fits well, huh neat wonder if that was what they were going for.
It's also funny that the drafts instantly become final rendered images, like, that's how easy and fast corpos think animations are done.
