I'm envious of Americas public land. A bunch of our land here in Canada is a very grey area. Where I live on Vancouver Island almost the whole darn island is logged which in turn gives the logging companies near complete control of access, even on leased crown land. If there is active logging and it's a safety issue most hunters etc. are happy to oblige but after the work, when that land sits there with a gate and a no trespassing sign we wonder where our representatives are. You are lucky (and unique) to have established organizations to mange the people land.
Yes, in spite of some problems created by red tape, the US is lucky to have some of the opportunities we have to participate in management of our lands.
I’m a little late to the party but I love this video. Public lands can be a challenge to explain, but you did a wonderful job. Definitely going to be pointing folks to this video. Thank you!
I just started learning about BLM and your video here’s like pure gold the way that you teach it in and share information is priceless thanks a lot I subscribed I’m gonna check out all of your other stuff thank you I will look into attending a BLM. Meeting somehow
Good video! In addition to the SRS and PILT funds the local counties/communities also benefit by the added revenue that these public lands generate from tourism, hunting, fishing, etc... Keep them coming Randy!
Was there ever a fair election to let the people decide if they wanted the federal government to commandeer their public lands? Did the people ever agree to pay grazing fees and other fees?
Thanks for explaining what BLM means. I watched your whole E-Scouting series with OnX and was wondering what that meant when you mentioned it. Yes I could of googled it, but I prefer this explanation. Thanks again Randy. :)
Very good information. I would like to hunt these lands but I dont know what the steps are to be eligible to hunt them. I'm from Texas and to hunt whitetail on public land is a pain. Its base on a lottery system and I've tried for year and never got picked. Any advice would be great thanks.
Very interesting and thoughtful insight into the blm land, which many may know and many may not know is being sold off to developers here in California, even in national park lands. Everywhere in california it seems even in the most pristine and desirable places one would want to recreate you are going to be in someone's front yard, not sure how we got to this point in california but it all happened in the last 20 years and there seems to be no way to stop this use of blm land.
Hi randy, this is probably not the appropriate video to ask this but I’m looking for a list of books to read, I read A Sand County Almanac after you mentioned it, and it is by far my all time favorite book I’ve ever read, so I was wondering if you knew of any other gems like it? Thanks
My two recent favorites are "The Big Burn" about the huge fires of the northern Rockies 110 years ago and "The Last Stand" about George Bird Grinell almost single-handedly saving the remnants of the American bison.
@@Fresh_Tracks How about Edward Abbeys books ? He has written some interesting ( but dated ) nature studies essays . I read his A SAND COUNTY ALMANAC a while back . And thanks for reminding me that I should read it again .
@@Fresh_Tracks I have a follow up question. I am an outdoorsman and comfortable with firearms. I have always been curious about hunting. Having most recently watched "Stars in the Sky: A Hunting Story" by Steven Rinella and highly inspired by it. I live in Southern California. What would be a good way to "dip my toes", I was thinking a guided hunt of a small game would be a good way to start. Any pointers in right direction would be much appreciated.
Public land is just that public land and MUST be accessible to public yet million of acres are not because they are surrounded by private land owners telling the public "no access". They (the private land owners) say they are the stewards protecting public land... Wrong, but they get away with it.. Our constitution gives the public the RIGHT to access PUBLIC LAND!
There are no BLM managed lands in TN. The vast majority are in the 12 western states. Search online for Public Land Statistics and it will list where lands are located (Table 1-4). It also has a short history of how the lands came to be managed by BLM.

Jesse Shapiro When there is a government shut down watch how they lock people out of these areas(and access to private land), then you see who really owns it. Government land supporters seem blinded by the general mismanagement of these lands. There is no American or constitutional position to support the amount of government land in the west.
The difference between BLM and NPS as far as hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, etc.... USFS is a division of the Dept. of Agriculture and as such is managed as resource land - timber, grazing and other economic development. _The land managed by the BLM is NOT the same as national park land._ BLM land includes designated lands set aside as 'wilderness preservation areas' and is NOT open to the public.
