This film was a Day 1 purchase for me. I never tire of this film, and it still, to this day has not lost any of its relevance. Poitier's performance is historically important, but I love Steiger's portrayal of Gillespie equally. So much is being said in his eyes that he doesn't say in words. Bravo Criterion! This is one of my favorite Criterion editions, and I thank you Daisuke for discussing it. Happy vacationing my friend!
Love this film, before the Criterion version came out, I had not seen it. My mom though, used to watch the spi off TV show when I was a kid thojg. So I already knew all the characters going into it. After watching it now, I absolutely love it, it is one of my many favorite films.
Great choice. Wonderfully entertaining film. Poitier did some of my favourites of the 60's. A Raisin In The Sun (also on Criterion) & Guess Who's Coming To Dinner are another two with race relations at their core & are unforgettable. I also adore A Patch Of Blue which is a beautiful largely forgotten gem of Poutier's from that decade. I watched A Fistful Of Dynamite for the first time in years only this week too which is such an underrated Leone masterpiece & Steiger's best career performance for me. Been meaning to watch In The Heat Of The Night again too.
A Patch of Blue is a fantastic movie! I’m a big fan of that one and wish more people were aware of it. Hopefully the recent Warner Archive blu-ray release helps with that some.
This is a film that’s been on my watchlist for ages that I’ve still never gotten around to. I’m definitely going to have to pick this one up during the November sale!
Such a good film, with two strong leads. Love the dynamics of its characters even the smaller parts. Feel the ending scene is perfect where the sheriff considers Poitier character as a equal and a friend. Like how both sides have learned from each other. Great job on reviewing this film Daisuke. My last order for the B&N sale picked up War and Peace, A Man Escaped, Death by Hanging, Le Havre, Europa Europa, and preordered 1984.
It's a whodunnit where it doesn't matter who does it.....just enjoy the incredible performances of all the cast, especially Poitier and Steiger.....Quincy Jones' soundtrack, which mixes country, blues and soul.....sweat along with Haskell Wexler's cinematography.....even when you know who done it, you still want to watch again
I’ve not gotten this film. I’ve seen it before but it’s been many years. I remember some notable lines, such as “They call me Mr. Tibbs!” I think the film is on the Criterion Channel, so I might see about watching it if it is and if I enjoy it, I might buy the blu-ray. That said, the features sound pretty cool. Thank you for the video Daisuke and I hope you’re having a great vacation!
Hello Daisuke just wanted to let you know what I picked up at the B&N sale. First i had to get the zatoichi Collection then both Martin scorsese’s world cinema project, dekalog, Berlin Alexanderplatz, the BRD trilogy, and yojimbo and sanjuro. Love the live-streams
This is actually the next film in my netflix dvd/blu-ray queue :D It's been really good being able to check films out instead of blind-buying criterions. The last ones I got were Rushmore, Charade, and Stray Dogs; all of which I liked but didn't love enough to buy right now. Ones I liked so much I'm considering buying during the sale: One-Eyed Jacks, A Face in the Crowd, It Happened One Night

Agree with you, this is an important film that is deserving of criterions treatment.
Thank you so much my friend.

Thank you Eric. This is wonderful to read as always. I hope you are well my friend.
Love this film so much! The package and art design is one of my favorites from the year so far.
Thank you my friend. Criterion really did a great job with this release.

This is an excellent write up of the film my friend. Yes, the whodunnit is almost secondary when compared to the overall impact of the film itself.

This is another one that I think you will find very engaging indeed my friend!
I know this is unrelated to the video, but I just ordered the Ingmar Bergmans cinema box from the Criterion sale here in the US, and man am I excited!
Good for you, man.....Enjoy.....👍👍👍👍
OhCawd fantastic! Please enjoy it!
By the way, I gotta ask: is your user name inspired by TCAP?!
Daisuke Beppu Oh yes it is! I think the Lorne Armstrong episode/memes are hilarious! Great video as usual by the way!
OhCawd I am also addicted to TCAP clips on TH-cam. I think I have seen all the episodes dozens of times.
