- Based on Taiyo Matsumoto's popular manga serial "Black and White," this surreal anime adventure follows two penniless orphans, Black and White, struggling to survive on the mean streets of Treasure Town. When a megacorporation threatens to tear down the town to build an amusement park, Black and White engage in the fight of their life. Directed by Michael Arias, this dazzling tale comes from the creators of Animatrix.
I don't get why people are complaining about the character designs. I love them. They're so unique and original, nothing I've seen in anime before. They standout from everything and actually look Asian. They're so down to earth looking and I'm happy its not one of those painfully generic type designs we see all the time. The animators actually gave a crap to give an anime an original art style. Something you rarely see anymore. Maybe they're not "kawaii" enough for some, but I prefer creativity over mediocrity.
Rico theDemonSlayer I guess the more un-perfect you make them, the more charming and down to earth they look to me, combined with their lovable personalities (I adore White!). Not to say they look bad at all, but I wouldn't call them beautiful in the same sense a shojo themed anime or a bishounen character is. People only really accept what's deliberately given to them and they never look past that or into it more. You miss something truly unique and original like that.
because people were expecting hackneyed big eyed anime garbage, nobody wants anything original anymore...the designs are awesome. they put a lot of work into it
Nick Deenge The anime fandom is crowded with 15 year old weeaboo girls that don't know good anime from a rock and claim to be 100% "otakus." Why do you think SAO is so popular? Is it because its original and is a fresh of breathe air for anime or did people just fall in love with the premise, disregard any flaws, and self insert themselves into gary stu Kirito's place?
My guess is that the people complaining about the design, prefer the weeb looking high school shit.
Uhh, I'm Japanese. And no Japanese people look like this. I don't know what kind of "Asians" you are encountering, but they must suffer from some kind of facial deformity, and besides, the faces of the characters are intended by the author to be "hideously ugly" so you're literally calling Asians ugly then. What an ignorant comment. If you think Anime characters are not Japanese looking enough, you must have never seen any decent Animes. If you watch Satoshi Kon films, Zankyo no Terror, Serial Experiments Lain, or even the main characters from Attack on Titan (the ones with black hair), I think they fairly resemble the Japanese citizens. They don't necessarily have to be THIS deformed to look Japanese in your opinion. White people seem to love to underestimate our appearance like that, but to be honest, none of the beautiful Anime characters look western. Only the ones like Naruto or Misty from Pokemon which is the reason why I used to despise Anime until I found a good one
i saw this when i was little and for years i though all my memories of it came from i dream i had. I cannot believe this movie is real.
Yea same also I was searchong my closet and i found the dvd of it. The old days
I was so sure it was real I rediscovered it by searching anime about characters named black and white
Me too!! I’m like hoowww
Na bro wtf this is deadass what I felt
Same
This trailer does this movie no justice.
Agreed. At 1:17 it should have ended too.
No anime trailer ever does, but they have so many amazing movies.
+Steve Castle why? snakeing is such a badass song
Steve Castle it should've began at 1:17
Sadly
I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR ALMOST 7 YEARS!
lol, same.
Me too, saw this when I was very young on TV on a late night and I have been wondering what it was for all this time.
wow and i thought i was the only one lol
I have it on dvd😀
Yeah man I didn’t know how to spell it.
Still one of my fav animes. Bought it on a whim at a dollar store as a kid. So glad I did. Instant classic.
A town in blue playing in the background too is the cherry on top.
The darkness and the light.. the relationship between the two is handled so well, and both the plot, the setting and the art style is incredibly unique. You cannot regret watching this.
Found the name of this movie written in the back of an old notebook from 2012. The nostalgia rolled in as soon as I looked it up. Glad I had written it down!
I thought this movie was a fever dream for so long
This movie really blows everything else away honestly
This trailer does this movie no justice
+Serra Uke SECONDED, HOW DARE THIS TRAILER MAKE A MOCKERY OF MY FAV MOVIE WITH ALT TEEN POP
+elthorath I loved the ending song from Asian Kung Fu Generation, but in the trailer Plaid is way too necesary to show what this movie has to offer
Has anybody else been there ? I have been there...In that exciting, bustling place...Probably not in this world though, but this movie and its art, those cramped up streets and buildings, mean so much to me. I am certain I have lived such a life, it might all be in my head but that wouldn't matter much to me. The nostalgia this movie evokes in me is one of the purest emotions that I ever feel.
The character designs are beautiful
Masterpiece. No matter in term of story, art, animation and cinematography. It's true that I find the character is rather ugly when i first see the cover, but after watching this, I start to fall in love with its unique style, i am so glad it is not those typical anime style. Tekkon kinkreet easily make it to my top favourite, together with Spirited away.
Same, Spirited away, Tekkonkinkreet and Cowboy beebop (film) are my 3 faves..
@@3llevate who ?
Maybe the best animation movie ever made.
You don't know how many times I've watched this movie and how many times I've read the manga. I bought it so I can look at it forever. Looking forward to watch it again!!
I saw this movie as a kid when I was about 6 years old and in Egypt, and all I could remember was the uh... sword thing... that happened with the little brother. And it kind of scarred me as a child, but I remember still loving it enough that I looked for it for years!!! Absolute years. And today I just randomly saw it while my mother was scrolling through movies, and despite the last time I saw it was when I was six, I remembered it on sight! The visuals are so unique and impressionable, and even though I had nearly completely forgotten the movie, the plot, and most of what had happened, one look at the cover art and I immediately recognised it! That says a lot about how impressionable a movie is. I'm going to watch this now! Thank god I finally got a name!
i could only remember the crow scenes and the names, black and white XD, glad i found it too
I have discovered this film through playing OSU! haha and it has been my favorite animated film ever since; hands down one one of the best animations I've seen. At first I thought "wow, these characters look so funny" and that was because there was no major detail put into the character design, but rather the attention to detail was put into the background- and this works so so well imo, because like this, the simplistically drawn characters stand out from the background that is so well rendered that the name "Treasure Town" actually gets a new connotation.
The funny thing is that I remember watching or reading an interview with Michael Arias where he said that he feels like the animation for the part where Kuro confronts Itachi is trash because they were running short on budget and had to do a simpler animation. But am I the only one who feels like it fits fantastically? The contrast between the first half of the film and the second half where everything gradually becomes darker and scarier is jaw dropping to me. Also because you can link them to the personalities of the brothers.
And I can't forget about that soundtrack!!! For weeks I've listened to it on repeat like I was on drugs. Plaid did an amazing job at bringing to life the world of Tekkonkinkreet.
I've read a lot of reviews where people were complaining about the story being way too inconsistent in comparison to its superior animation and I totally disagree. The movie has laid out simple themes and that is a very effective way for the audience to engage with the film and not getting lost in a tangled storyline. By simple themes I mean topics that nearly everybody can relate to such as the theme of brotherhood, greed or lust for power etc that at their core lie so many emotions and moments that for a two hour movie it's nearly impossibly to illustrate. Which leaves us with the most beautiful thing, that being our imagination to wonder further.
I give this film a solid 10/10 must watch for anybody who is interested in deep and meaningful stories with gorgeous animation such as this.
"simplistically drawn characters"
Yeah, sure, a 4-year-old not specially talented boy did all the characters' designs.
this is such a visual masterpiece
This trailer probably turned a lot of ppl off for this movie
Yea im thinking of buying it but just watched trailer idk now.
+metal220 The trailer doesn't do the movie justice at all. It's full of fast paced action, great character development, and stunning visuals and story telling. Give it a try.
thanks!
they didnt deserve to see the artisic value in this film
F0XYr4bB!T luckily not me. Imma watch it this weekend
Fantastic anime movie that too few people talk about. Deep, heartbreaking in parts and beautiful with a unique artstyle.
Just saw this, my senses are overwhelmed, and so is my emotions! 🙏
Just bought the blu-ray at a convention without knowing anything about it. It grabbed my attention simply because of the art style which I do find a bit ugly but that was its charm since it was different. I did a quick check on review scores and it had pretty high scores so I got it. Seeing the trailer now, I think my gut didn't steer me wrong.
Those are going for $50 on ebay rn m8, cherish that
I saw this when I was 2 years old in Iran and never forgot it and I just finally found it after all those years
one of the best animes ive seen behind studio ghibli productions
This is still my favorite anime... I really love
I watched this movie a month ago and can I just say....that this is nothing more than a masterpiece! The characters do look a bit wacky, but it fits with the overall art of the movie! AND JESUS CHRIST! Can we appreciate how detailed the backgrounds are! Doing so many scenes for a movie that didn't receive the acknowledgement it should have! AND NOT ONLY THAT, but while the story is just amazing and well thought out. The scene with the minotaur was fucking AMAZING!
I saw this long ago even though I don't watch anime cartoons but I really liked it. I stumbled upon it at a movie rental store and I was probably elementary school but remember it pretty well and now I've stumbled upon it again. Could never remember the name of this movie I have such warm memories of but the accidental click of a video lead me here!
I feel the exact same way! I basically lived at the video stores and I founded this movie on a whim, freshman in high school, great times indeed.
can we all please close our eyes together and hum at a sacred frequency capable of shifting the cosmos into a universe where this is not only a feature length film but also a SERIES! PLEASE - TOGETHER WE CAN SHIFT THE COSMOS!
Can't believe I'd still come back here to remember my fav childhood to watch.
Been looking for this for so long... *sheds tear*
what a masterpiece this movie was. still is. -2019
Since finding this movie . And buying the DVD an giving it a chance. It's by far my all time favorite movie of all time .
Love the more experimental animation, shame we don't see it too often. This and Dead Leaves are such a joy to watch
I found it my childhood
Found this by accident at Barnes and bought it just because one of my great impulsive purchases
There’s something about this art style, I’m not even tryna sound edgy but it’s so comforting
I love this so much! I watched it by mistake and it was the best coincidence ever
This anime is refreshing
For some reason, this movie reminded me of the obscure, almost-eerie atmosphere of Rocko's Modern Life.
1:18 my fav music starts here
i think i remember seeing an ad for this on the DVD i have of Paprika. Really hard to find movies from this distributor in stores though! :/
For more uniquely designed anime look up The King of Pigs and The Fake. IF you know anymore please share. x
I strongly recommend Cat Soup.
It's surprisingly very very good - it's in my top 5 for sure
This is till one of my favorite movies
This movie is fucking dope.
I almost thought Masaaki Yuasa animated this given how similar the character design is to Mind Game!
One of the best anime movies
OMG that LANDSCAPE DESIGN!!! AWESOME !
This movie made me cry lol
bro until I was finally able to find the name of the movie I saw when I was a child, for days it felt like a long dream in which I finally woke up and found this movie again.....
I own this movie on DVD...definitely one of my top ten!
Thanks for posting
Such a hidden gem
I’ve never watched or even heard of this movie before but it gives me paranoia agent vibes
Such a good film
Same studio contribute an episode to a full feature animation called "Gotham Knight" : I have a story for you
I heard this was a big inspiration for the Jet Set Radio games.
Well, looks like I know what I'll be watching this weekend.
This looks great, animation is epic
I am here because I looked up a Craig xen song and someone used movie footage for an amv and now I really want to see this movie
Its been much much too long since I watched that movie on my psp & it was awesome 😇
nice trailer, this is something I gotta go seeXD
omg the memories
can anyone PLEASE tell me on what city or town this animation was based on ? or what animators the creators were inspired from ? cuz this looks so pleasing and nostalgic to me .... like i've already seen it in some childhood illustration book or something
kowloon city
I think you are over thinking this movie, it's purposely surreal because the entire film is a metaphor about the dichotomy between light and dark... but ends up revealing that light and dark, good and evil, mean something different to everyone depending on their point of view. Realistically, the world is all shades of grey, and we all need some good and bad to live in balance. This film was beautiful, truly an experience.
ich liebe diesen film *o* der Stile, die Musik, die Charaktere, die Andeutungen ach einfach die ganze atmosphäre ist so TOLL *o* hab ihn für nur 8 euro bekommen auf Blu ray ^o^
The music 2 th Asian Kung-Fu Generation - A Town In Blue
This kinda feels like (vibes) when i first discovered gorillaz and after remembered all the bizarre unique visuals back in the days i saw for a quick glimpse when i was idk 4-10 years old, i remember the *false* memories of me seeing it painted on the tunnel walls (i saw it somewhere definitely but WHERE? my memories right now show the tunnel walls). Right now i'm watching this trailer - i feel...summer evening dusty chill air hitting me, it means i'm experiencing the same reaction cus this cartoon is very unforgettable and striking (gives a strong impression). If i saw this when i was small then i would flip, but i just discovered this show this year (january)
what is the name of the song that starts on 0:46?
Asian Kung-Fu Generation - A Town in Blue
This trailer.... Doesn't do this movie any justice whatsoever
great music. going to be seeing the film in a couple of days. what is the music at the end of the trailer (when it's doing the flashes of Humanity, Betrayal, etc.)? It's amazing!
I remember seeing this movie in a Ross store about 6 years ago. I couldn't remember the name of it only remembering it began with a T.
The bear ears girl inspired Louise from Bob's Burgers!
This is my all time favorite movie
I found it! It's Asian Kung Fu Generation Aru Machi no Gunjou
I decided to watch this great movie because of Aru Machi no Gunjou song.
shirow Masamune is obviously an influence for Taiyo matsumoto I mean its like "black and white"
One of the best !!
I LOVE PLAID
(01:18)
When idiots tell me that fucking masterpiece looks like shit I quote Bill Hicks: “Mummy, mummy, the man you put me on to listen to has a blood bubble on his nose” “SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO HIM PLAY!”
This feels a like a mix of Satoshi Kon, Gorillaz and Jet Set Radio
Something similar, that you consider at this level and want recommend?
Does anyone know the song in the background? For the first part? I’ve been looking for it forever
Does anyone know the song starting at 0:12?
Snakeing - Plaid
Amazing !
It weird how I vaguely remembered this movie, I just love it some much. And people who says "the trailer does the movie no justice ".
Well did you actually watch the movie. It not like the other anime now days with the same art style. It's sad that people are so closed minded about things.
Love this
my childhood 😭
Maybe I'm completely off base and insane, but Treasure Town reminds me of India. I saw some signs with Hindi in them, and an auto rickshaw and a tempo, and even a sign in hindi that read "beedi", which are all very Indian. Maybe all of these things are also found in another country, but it's driving me crazy that I can't find a single mention of this observation anywhere. I'm only like 8 minutes into the movie and already there are so many things reminescent of India. I had to pause the movie to search for anything that could point me towards why there are Indian influences (if that's what they are). Could anyone help me out?
+TheWatev123456789 the movie was directed by mexican director Miguel Arias. idk if that has any relation to indian culture.
+Zachary Robinson I doubt that. Plus the way the elephant they keep showing in the movie is drawn exactly like a Hindu deity called Ganesh.
Miguel told his art director that he wanted Treasure Town to stand out. he wanted the viewer to get attached to it as if it were their own neighborhood. the city is a colorful character with a collection of real-world references, so viewers from different locations would hopefully see their little piece of home inside Treasure Town. he told the art team that he wanted viewers to feel nostalgic, so the art director and the color designer looked at printings, and designs from the 1960's, children's books, matchboxes, and billboards. the research they did for these things are based on Japan, India, and China.
you saw some things that reminded you of India, and that's exactly what he wanted to happen.
Wow that's incredible. Thank you for sharing that with me. How do you know though?
TheWatev123456789
he talks about it in this interview
