Parakala talks about the extraordinary act of omission of Jawaharlal Nehru from the Amritmahotsav poster by ICHR and points out it’s pettiness. He contrasts this brazen attempt by the funding body and its minders with the assessment of Nehru by his colleagues, and those the architects of New India claim to draw inspiration from. He says that it is important to see what the ICHR has done in the context of the seemingly sporadic and unconnected incidents of violence against and intimidation of small helpless persons by the Hindutva zealots. For, what the academic funding institution under the new dispensation has attempted to do in the domain of history and what is being done on the streets by its ideological foot soldiers are integral parts of one single political project, called New India.

I was born in 1962, I was denied to know the greatness of any of the personalities you mentioned as much as I was made to know about Nehru. Why? It’s certainly not Nehru’s fault. But why voices like yours not raised for those leader’s legitimate space in history since independence, was there no freedom to talk like this in those days? Or was there a clandestine indoctrination to talk about Nehru only?
Someone said that history is written according to the whims and fancies of the rulers. But since independence we are the rulers but a families whims and fancies prevailed. We are paying the price for the silence of people like you since independence. I’m happy that now such voices have space.

He was the hero and the idol of the time. If post independant india were a movie, then nehru was the hero as the first prime minister, captain of the ship that was india, as it left the shore into open waters. Heroes are naturally talked about more than others, while all others do play important parts in the context. That was the need of a young nation coming out of prolonged stress. Today, decades later, we surely have the luxury to sit back and pickapart the hero to find how mortal he was. Thats good because his actions and leadership has put us now in a place where we have the luxury for such debate. If he behaved anything like the jokers we see nowadays, such luxury would be hard to come by.

Couldn't agree more on this. Misguided political Hindutva sidelines the overarching Hindutva which means Hinduness. BJP of today (Arun Jaitley himself stated) uses Hindu card for votes. On Nehru-Patel, even a strong nationalist & perhaps more daring freedom fighter like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose named one of the regiments in INA after Nehru. This despite Bose disagreeing openly and strongly with Nehru & Gandhi. Everyone disagreed but none disrespected the other! Nehru however left a legacy wherein policy mistakes no doubt cost the country in long term but in terms of shaping our post Independence polity, certainly he was a towering figure and cannot be replaced/ cast aside.

Surprisingly I have come across your talk on nehru. There is nothing great Patel talked about nehru because travelled together for long time. There is one professor at IIT Kanpur joined in late sixties. He is from Karnataka. Before coming to iit he was in us. He might not have met nehru. He wrote post graduate course text book in mid seventies. He dedicated the book to first prime minister of india Jawaharlal nehru for encouraging science education in India. This person is like father figure in electrical engg. He is with one of top universities in us. Great presentation and research.

The omission occasioned by ICHR, was an opportunity for to enlighten the younger generation on role and contribution of Nehru to our nation when the present political dispensation has absolutely no regard towards him and bent on maligning his name and obliterating him from the minds of the children by removing the association his name on 'Children's Day' celebrations on 14th November every year. I have not made reference to this, but I read on social media some days ago.
