- For almost six months, 84-year-old Stan Swamy, S.J., has been held in a Mumbai jail on charges of sedition and contravention of India's Unlawful Activities (Prevention Act) (U.A.P.A.) of 1967. Repeated requests for his release on humanitarian grounds have been denied. In this episode of Behind the Story, America editor Ricardo da Silva, S.J., is joined by two Jesuits who know Fr. Swamy-Xavier Jeyaraj, S.J., and Cedric Prakash, S.J.-to assess Fr. Swamy's current situation, why his request for bail has been denied twice and the next steps in his legal case.

Today, on 5th July 2021, Fr Stan Swamy has died, even as the High Court of Bombay was hearing his petition for bail. As we mourn his passing, as we gather in our hearts the works of a life lived for the poor, we are aghast at the incomprehensible injustice of his death in incarceration. Rest in Peace Fr. Stan.
Praise God for the video. We hope people in the West will call out the persecution of Christians in India.

But I hate and condemn any effort to give a religious colour to this issue as it is sought to be done by the two Jesuits in this video. It is noteworthy that the editor Ricardo da Silva avoids being influenced by the religious connection the two Jesuits have tried to lend. His observations are graceful. Religious bullying should not be allowed to influence the justice system of India or any other sovereign democracy. That will take us back to medieval times.
