  • Oftentimes when interpreting for mental health scenarios, patients talk about their past or recount traumatic events. These utterances are often long and simultaneous interpreting is arguably the best way of ensuring you are interpreting a patient's words accurately and completely, without having to stop them in the middle of an emotionally-charged utterance to interpret consecutively. This exercise is designed for medical interpreters to practice simultaneous interpreting in a mental health encounter. This audio exercise can also be used to practice shadowing, note-taking, or even long consecutive.
This exercise was produced as a companion to Americans Against Language Barriers' Mental Health Training for medical interpreters, which is a free-to-watch self-paced continuing education series for medical interpreters. For more information, please visit: aalb.org
