  • I'm spending 3 days in the wild backpacking in the Lake District National Park. I've chosen the Lake District as my solo wild camping destination. The plan is to do some serious thru hiking taking in many of the Wainwright Walks in the beautiful lake district. I'm solo camping so I've got all my wild camping gear with me as I need to be totally self-sufficient. Backpacking for 3 days won't be easily especially as I'll be wild camping in the rain and wind.
I'm using the 2022 Tarptent Scarp as my 1 person tent. It's a 4 season tent that can withstand all sorts of conditions including solo wild camping in heavy rain and strong winds.

My wild camp spot was Little Hart Crag at 637 metres above sea level. This is an unknown wild camping spot. However, is a perfect solo camping spot for a couple of backpackers.
The Wainwrights in Part 3 include:
    Little Hart Crag
    Red Screes
These are part of the Eastern Fells in the Lake District National Park.
    Day 1: / strava
    Day 2: / strava
    Day 3: / strava
Part of hiking the Wainwright Fells is to show you what you can achieve when out solo backpacking. Hiking with a heavy backpack bag isn't easy but it can be done with a little perseverance and determination. You need to get the best balance of the best camping gear versus weight.

    Thanks, Andy.

Just getting into this kind of thing and slowly building up what I need to go on my first wild camp. Can’t think of a better way to escape the pressure of life and get out in the beauty of it all. Thanks for your videos.

Enjoyed this series of videos, does look like a really good three day route. I had two days in that area a few weeks ago and I also found the "path" between Stony Cove pike and Thornthwaite Crag an absolute killer! I also had to camp behind the wall there out of the wind! Great series of videos. Roger

An interesting watch. Two things surprised me though Andy. First, that you said 90% of wildcampers go out for one night only. I suppose that could be correct but I guess it depends on the circles you move in. All my backpacking friends do multiday trips as the norm, although of course time and domestic constraints sometimes limit us to a quick overnighter. I agree with you that being out for more than one night is a far more rewarding experience. Second, I was rather surprised you ran out of food for the last day. I might be rather over-organised but before I go on a multi day trip I would always lay each day's food out, breakfast, lunch, main meal and snacks for 'on the go'. Each day's food then goes in a separate plastic food bag marked with the day it's for,, and then all these go together in my food dry bag. In addition, I have a plastic food bag in there for brew stuff - you can easily estimate the number of tea bags and coffee bags you are likely to need. Finally, each morning I take the day's snacks out of the main food bag and stick them in my hip belt pockets for easy access. Sorry if this is telling granny how to suck eggs! Oh. And if only brewing up and heating water to rehydrate meals a 100 gr gas cartridge is more than enough for two nights - a large cartridge does me for at least a week and often 10 days.

Great series of videos, Andy. Enjoyed all 3 of them. Waking up on the top of a mountain and watching the sunrise.... priceless! Only just got into wild camping recently and have already experienced this myself. Looking forward to your next video. Did you come to some arrangement with the Inn with regards to leaving you car in the car park? Steve.

Just finished watching your day 3 andy, what a great adventure you have had , I have done a few wild camping 2 nighters myself and funny enough on angle tarn, but never filmed them in the past, think I need to film my wild camping more now , look forward to your future footage in 2023 mate

Your ethos and message in this video is just brilliant! It’s always worth taking time to recharge and reset even if it’s through a backwards method of hiking 20 plus miles in solitude. It would be interesting to see what and how you collected drinking water throughout your route and some more in depth to your gear. But overall throughout the series it definitely got more enjoyable with this video topping it off and the views from the ending! Brilliant job 👍🏻😁

Great content. I am new. Spent a night out on Holly head while on a family holiday in August. Was so lovely. Fantastic sunset, ancient burial ground, peaceful as. Bacon breckie on a Trangia. Got my Cumulus quilt now so want a camp before it's too cold. Think I have found a spot nearby, just need a warmer night (9°), and not a school night!

Salomon’s fit me really well. Quests or Element. This year I’ve also been using AKU boots (trekker lite?) too which are excellent. For lighter use my Keen boots are great for fast hiking. Unfortunately my Inov-8 boots aren’t great so I’d avoid those.

That's a good route.i suppose I'm fairly lucky I'm only a cpl hours from the lakes so I can get there pretty early. but I agree spend all day hiking then wild camp it's way better and you definitely get more out of it. much better than an hour's walk then camp.red screes isn't that bad bit scramble in a few places but tbh fairly easy

What sleeping bag did you use on this trip? Does it pack down very small? Was it very expensive £200+

    • @BackpackingUK

It's the Black Ice sleeping bag from Camperlists. It packs down small for the warmth it provides.

Could you please give me a bit of advice on what sort of sleeping mat to buy cheers 🍻

    • @BackpackingUK
      @BackpackingUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Personally, I’d always recommended an inflatable sleeping pad with a R Value of 4. Inflatable pads are much more comfortable than Z mats. A R value of 4 will help keep you warm throughout the year in the UK.

It's pronounced Care n not carn pal. You take way too much crap, you ain't gonna die at that time of year in the Lakes it isn't the North Face of the Eiger. After 37 years of mountaineering, 17 yrs in the military, it still makes me chuckle the amount of "experts" giving advice there are out there.

I use it all though. I’m always well fed, watered, dry, warm and comfortable. Each to their own!
