  • I'm spending 3 days in the wild solo backpacking in the UK. I've chosen the Lake District as my wild camping location. My plan is to do some serious hiking in the Lakes taking in many of the Alfred Wainwright Summits in the stunning lake district national park. I'm solo wild camping so I've got all my wild camping gear with me as I need to be totally self-sufficient. Backpacking for 3 days won't be easily especially as I'll be solo camping in the rain and wind.
I'm using the Tarptent Scarp 1 as my backpacking tent. It's a four season tent that can withstand bad weather conditions whilst wild camping in heavy rain and strong winds. My Leki trekking poles are really helping with the thru hiking and my Osprey Atmos 65 backpack bag enables me to carry my camping gear comfortably.

My wild camp spot was Little Hart Crag at 637 metres above sea level. I've never seen anyone wild camping at this spot before. Is an absolutely stunning solo camping location.
The Wainwrights in Part 2 include:
    Angletarn Pikes
    Birks
    St Sunday Crag
    Fairfield Peak
    Hart Crag
    Dove Crag
    Little Hart Crag
These are part of the Eastern Fells in the Lake District.
Part of thru hiking the Wainwright Fells is to show you what you can achieve when out backpacking in the uk. a thru hike with a heavy backpack bag isn't easy but it can be done with a little perseverance and determination.

    Thanks, Andy.

Andy I'm absolutely LOVING these videos!! I'm on the settee in my sleeping bag (can't put the heating on!) and enjoying the virtual camping experience. Can't wait for the next installment xx

Great video, Andy. Loving this series of solo backpacking / wild camping. Thanks for keeping it real, showing how tough it really can be in those conditions. The real takeaway is that we can all face these challenges and come through them with the the immense satisfaction and enjoyment that being in such a stunning environment can bring. It is so inspiring to watch. Only recently started wild camping myself (at the age of 70) with an overnighter in the Brecon Beacons. My backpack only weighed 12 kilos and it nearly killed me!

Thanks so much for sharing, that’s exactly how I want people to feel after watching these. For me, it’s all part of the adventure! Start with the right mindset and you’ll always enjoy wild camping no matter the weather (and / or lack of sleep!).

For starters, I'm not a TH-cam fan. But I've absolutely loved watching these videos. Your emotions, your sentiment, your thoughts, your expressions...I've lived em all. Totally understood where you were coming from!
I know where you where and have done a very similar trip. Congratulations pal. Excellent viewing. Honest judgements, assessments, and words.
Your first pitch by Angle Tarn wasn't good. The Scarp1 is THE best tent I've ever known. The crossing poles have been used plenty, and the thing is as tight as a drum when pitched right.
As for kit, I think you got it just about perfect. I would've added a pair of hut slippers for evenings in and around the tent, though.
Great stuff pal. I'll watch some more 👍

Following on from my comments in your previous video, the low down on your bag unpack was brilliant. Good to give a idea of what to pack on a couple of days venture. 😁 this video was loads better it seemed more for the walk and what’s around you and what your doing rather than just repeating the weather forecast. And the going through the types of meals the fear you’ve used etc and the walk through on the maps at the end of both videos is a nice touch 👌🏻 good job lad 😁

Another good video (so far at least) Andy. Just on when you mentioned the porridge pot taking up a bit of room - I've started emptying the contents into a wee ziplock bag and just using one of those x-mugs as a bowl for it. Easier to get into a bag without worrying about the pot splitting/having to carry bulkier rubbish.

It's a cracking route you did I've camped at angle tarn but only in winter less people there then also I've camped at scandale tarn a great little spot nice and sheltered.but a lot of people underestimate how difficult the going is in the lakes.as for weight sometimes it is what it is you need it so you just have to carry it but that's when you get back and really ask yourself did I really need to carry that but a 1st aid kit is always carried a few less clothes you can get away with leaving embrace the stink haha

I prefer going outside of the summer holidays. In summer I would have taken less and lighter gear and then that means a lighter backpack to so the weight savings are soon substantial. With hindsight I could have shaved 1kg off but I needed / used everything else.

    • @craig3401
      @craig3401 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BackpackingUK that's the thing with weight if you use it you just have to carry it we all try saving weight but sometimes it's just not that easy especially in bad weather but I just suck it up now and put damp clothes on but keep a dry set for night time

Andy, I was fearing you would lose your tent when you went on the night hike! Good job you left the light on in your tent 😅. When you planned your route did the Cofa Pikes section not look so bad or was it attempting it with the backpack weight that made you alter your plan?

    • @BackpackingUK

When we go away we tackle some Grade 1 scrambles. However, they’re not particularly enjoyable with a backpack on. I always find the bag is pushing me forwards or backwards. You soon learn to control your balance!!!

Yes, even so, the bathtub floor on these tents should be fully waterproof. Personally I don’t think any tent should have a seam straight thought the middle of the tent, there’s no need for it.
