The best strategy when playing honestly is to block his sword attacks with your own and not to jump because that's when you're most vulnerable. It's also when he's the most vulnerable, back him toward the screen edge to the point that he jumps over you or starts hopping and you can get a jab in.
I just remember crouching in the left corner stabbing the air, he never hit me and you eventually get enough hits on him to kill him. This was back in 1987-88 so my memory may be less than 100% accurate though.
This game has a unique flavor of frustration that Linkus's face captures perfectly throughout. When you die in a bumbling/stupid/careless way, so that it could be funny in some other context, except for the fact that deaths are SO punishing in this game it just makes you boil with rage inside. I've had that feeling with other games before, but never so deeply and so often as I do in this one.
The stream for the final dungeon was amazing from making it to the dungeon, to telling us his dad made a map for the dungeon and made it so hard, to hitting lots of dead ends, to Linkus making the map, to awsmrs to buy the map with 7000 bits, to the stupid bird soldiers, to the grinding, to the raging, to the encounter with the Thunderbird, to finally beating it and getting jumpscared by dark link, finally beating him and winning, and a useless glitch at the end.
I believe it wasn’t intentional. The original Japanese game was on a disk and the great palace took the entire side two so they had no choice but to restart the player from there

So, I bought Zelda Game and Watch in 2022 purely for Link's Awakening, because I thought 3 games have more value than one Switch remake. After playing through LA, I wanted to finish Zelda 1, because I heard the stories about Zelda 2. But then I tried to play Zelda 2, and after a lot of attempts (and clearing Death Mountain), I started to enjoy it, and eventually, I finished the game and it is now tied for my favourite Zelda game. Great stuff, great playthrough, Mr. Linkus
@@Zel-Veraan it's not that bad even without them, if you either use guides or have a lot of patience and under no circumstances play the Japanese version
The fairy being able to go through the keyhole is a leftover from when the game was going to have more protagonists than Link. Each party member would have their own unique abilities, which was flight and going through keyholes for the fairy.
DANG what a blast to the past! yes, I remember how insane and annoying difficult this one was. 9:05 "What is that, holy shit A wizard!? 2 wizards?!" -Linkus7 Good job dude! I enjoyed the video.
27:13 So the Fokka are actually extremely easy to beat as long as you don't try to rush passed them. Watch and block their sword beams while analyzing the pattern they make. When you see them jump, jump up stab to take them out. Take about three hits if I remember right with a level 8 sword. With them it's easier to be more patient with them rather than trying to jump stab them like the iron knuckles who you can actually jump stab aggressively towards (even the blue ones if you're careful) Up stabbing the giant bot shown prior to my time stamp is usually the perfect way to fight them without taking damage. Most people do this instinctively.
He suffered a lot because he didn't commit to beating enemies early on. If you grind through everything you can usually get 2 or 3 level ups per dungeon
ngl i havent played the game so my comment may be wrong but i think the dificulty comes from people being impatient and rushing like hell, if he took his time i could see him dieing half the ammount of times because many deaths were just stupid plays in rushes or panic because he rand al the way to the middle by damage boosting and was on his last sliver of health when he realized.. the games were not made to be speedrun-able at those ages, so rushing really was against him on this one.
@@leanblasterex5240 Pretty much this. I'll excuse any deaths were he was unexpectedly hit mid air because some enemies spawning are unpredictable and the knockback can be brutal sometimes too.
That moment where the old dude with the triforce disappeared and the screen turned purple I just knew it wasn't over yet and Linkus was gonna be pissed.
He's 100% going to play again. This is one of the rare games that actually gets way MORE fun to revisit once you know the strategies. But also, he should just play the new remastered fangame. Superior in every way.
I beat Zelda 2 in the summer of '89 as a 14 year old. Never knew it was considered the hardest Zelda game. You do need pretty good timing and reflexes like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.
Honestly, if anyone watching ever wants to play this game, just allowing a save state at the beginning of each dungeon is a great way to relieve a lot of the backtracking without breaking the difficulty. ((I also ended up making a save state before Thunderbird because by that point I was so done lol).
As a kid there was a rumor that you were going to find a new adventure if you finished the game ten times. All your stats moves over so you have level eight on everything, so it's not as hard as the first time. I did beat the game ten times, the rumors were false…

The biggest issue with these old games is that they were made for their time. They are pretty short games in actuality, so they extend the length with impossible secrets and backtracking to keep people engaged for longer until the next games came out. Truly a product of their time
Hint if you ever Replay: If you utilize your life spell when magic drops you can get back to full health more often it will help a lot. Also go and grind the orange lizards in the woods over the south beach and to the east by New Kasuto they give 150 xp each and are easy to kill you can level all your skills up to max (8) in like half an hour doing that. Edit: Also hack for the final level. Go left twice, then just keep going right.
I remember the first time i beat it on the 3ds with the Nintendo power guide of the gc collector s edition. The 3ds save states helped so much. I usually grinded a few lives in the woods near new kasuto town. You get ~200 points per enemy. I got to the point i could grind points without looking at the game. My favorite enemy to grind in this game is the red ironknuckle at the start of the third palace, because with a jump slash he's trivial to kill, and he occasionally drops 200xp, but you can't grind here after you've placed the crystal at the end of the palace.
