You should run the half in Houston. Here’s why:
Of the 200 men who have the standard, only 18 have qualified with a half marathon time. But, 6 of the 18 men with the standard ran their qualifying half marathon in Houston. Meaning, the Houston half marathon is responsible for 33% of all the men who qualified with a half-marathon time.
Of the 182 men who qualified by meeting the full marathon standard, 67 ran their standard at CIM. So, about 37% of the men with the standard in the full marathon ran their qualifying time at CIM. By comparison, only 7 men met the qualifying standard for the full marathon in Houston (3.8%).
So, the real question is whether you should run the full at CIM or half in Houston. Based on your times, I think it makes sense to do the half.
You were less than 3 minutes off the half marathon standard during the 1st half of the Amsterdam marathon. You ran that time while knowing you still had another 13.1 miles to run. You weren’t trying to run a fast half marathon, you were trying to run a fast marathon. Had you been running a half marathon, you wouldn’t have had to worry about reserving any energy for another 13.1 miles. That alone indicates you’ve got the fitness to run a 1:05-1:06 right now. Also-you’ve been training for the marathon, not the half. By switching your training to focus on the half, I think you’ve got a better shot at knocking off 3 minutes from your half marathon time than if you continued to train for the full and tried to knock off 5 minutes.

    QD: Houston Full.
Reasoning: Relentless! You have trained for this goal, you have sacrificed for this goal, and you just spoke about Not Giving Up. You've been blessed with a healthy end of season so go get what is awaiting with all the hard work and determination. Plus, Houston is a fast course that will have plenty of 5:18 pace seekers to run with.

CIM or Houston? I’ve run both and both courses are fast. CIM has some rolling hills whereas Houston is basically flat. Both races should have runners looking for Olympic Trials qualifiers so you should have some company which always helps. Both are great events but I’d probably opt for Houston due to the timeframe. Oh, and I’d opt for the marathon versus the half. With the 2 recent marathons, your body should be getting ‘use’ to the distance/pacing versus the additional speed needed for the half qualifier. Good luck!
    Happy Birthday True Love!

QD: Houston Half. It's too much to run 3 marathon within this time frame. Also you have to remember the fact you have to run another 1 once you're a qualifier. Take some rest and then start a training block to complete the half within 1:04.
3 minutes might seem a lot but running during a race and in a pack makes it much easier. You didn't push to run a half one within 1:07. We'll support you anyway whatever you will choose! You will get this done!

QOD: Full marathon in Houston! You’ve already demonstrated the fitness to run 2:19 in the marathon. Now you have the experience with the pacing. With fresh legs and the accumulated experience of this fall, you’ll get the OTQ!

  • @RetroModProductions

QOD: Full marathon in Houston. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of CIM seeing you're racing again this weekend you're legs will be TOAST. Giving your legs and mind more time to rest and prep for Jan will be so much better (IMO) But from the workouts you've done and the body of work you've built I think a 5:17-5:18 is more doable than 4:52. Watching the footage from NY you looked so smooth and clicked right along. I think the 900+ feet of elevation and the marathon a few weeks ago had an impact in your tanking at the later miles. I think now with the experience you have and the fitness you've gained from these marathons, Huston is going to be something very special.

Happy belated Birthday to True Love. The woman behind the man!
QOTD: It has to be Houston full. I know the half is intriguing, but that's a lot of time to shave off over 13 miles.

  • @TravelRunner
    @TravelRunner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Seth, I think you should try to do the Houston full. You've proven that you already have all the tools you need to run 2:19. On the other hand, I think a 1:04 half would be a reach considering you'll have to change your training and it'll probably require a long block of training to really get the speed needed to average 4:52 for 13.1. I'm not sure you have enough time to do the speed training required to hit that 1:04 time. Not to mention that more speed training in snowy Denver would be an additional challenge. I say focus on maintaining your marathon fitness, hit a few key workouts to dial in on that 2:19 pace, and grab that OTQ at the Houston full. BTW - CIM is too close, don't even consider it unless you can't gain an entry into Houston. Good luck!

    @dandy877 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

QD: Houston full! You already know you are at the correct level of fitness to reach the time needed and you have honed in on the proper training for this distance as well. Maybe more importantly, now you have experience at the distance and have a feel for the correct pace and nutrition strategy that you can capitalize on. It would be heart breaking to fall short attempting a half marathon simply because of lack of experience racing at this distance.

Seth, I believe you should do the Houston Full Marathon. I feel like the Marathon is what you have trained for and now you have two experiences under your belt. I think that the half would be to many unknowns at this point. You haven't really started down that path yet. If it were me and it was my last chance to chase down my dream before Atlanta, I would personally want to take the option I was more familiar with and had the most experience with. Your dream was to run a sub 2:19 marathon. I feel like you need to persevere and see it through. You can do it Seth. We are all cheering for you. Everything you said in this vlog, your previous Twitter post, it all screams stick with the original plan to me. Good luck buddy, I can't wait to see it unfold no matter what you choose!

Oh brother... You need to rest in order to get faster. Not to mention your risk to get injured goes up by not letting your body recover properly. My recommendation would be to do the FULL in HUSTON! It's still not enough time for normal people, but you are way above the norm. Race hard in Argentina but take a few day off from running. I know that sounds crazy for you, but your body will thank you and you will come back stronger and faster. Best of luck and keep fighting!!! Your daily vlog motivates me every morning. QOTD: I think that if you feel like you have the speed then the Houston half is best also that's how Jim Walmsley qualified so maybe it's a good option for ultra runners? However, if your heart is set on qualifying through the marathon then Houston full is the best bet, CIM just seems too soon after Amsterdam, new York and I'm assuming you're all in on world mountains?

QOD: Definitely the Houston Half Marathon! The thing you need to keep in mind is that you did go out fast in Amsterdam but you were still pacing yourself, so that is not accurate half marathon time. You can get on the track and get more speedwork in. The half will go by so much faster since you ran those two marathons already. No doubt you can rock out a 1:03 and change and qualify for the Olympic Trials!

  • @4321beatles

QD: Houston. As for the distance, I think the question is what do you estimate your half marathon time would have been had Amsterdam been a half? Presumably your 1:06 still involved a pacing strategy to carry you over the next 13 miles. Do you feel that you could have hit 1:05 for 13.1 miles if you weren't trying to pace yourself for 26.2 miles? In short, I don't know how reliable that 1:06 is because of the context in which it was raced. You presumably would have been faster if you were "only" racing a half. So to answer your question regarding distance, if you think you would have been closer to the qualifying time, then race the half. Otherwise, I'm not sure if there is enough time to build up the speed work. You've also learned a lot from Amsterdam and NYC that could really benefit a Houston marathon attempt. Do you feel you can close the 4+ minute gap at the marathon distance? Alternatively, you can take the personal "W"s, ensure you don't injure yourself, and prepare for the Trials in 2021. Being relentless also involves patience.

    Happy Birthday to Mrs DeMoor!!
As for the QOTD: Try to keep this in mind when deciding between the full or half; as of 10/22/2019 there are 200 men qualified and out of that only 18 have done it with a 1:04:00 half marathon. Jim Walmsley and Chase Weaverling just made it in at 1:04:00 (Houston 2019). I’m with most of the other comments and think the Houston Full gives you the best chance of hitting the standard. Plus would the increase in training intensity needed for the speed to drop 3+ minutes lead to an injury? Whatever you decide we are rooting for you and will be watching!!

Houston full. Remember Jim W ran 1:04 flat coming from a similar background. Vdot tables also suggest the half standard is harder

He ran a 1:06 during a marathon. OTQ for the half is 1:04. He is closer to the half OTQ than the full.

Seth! So impressed with your performance and attitude. Relentless is right! Answer of the day from me: I think you should go for the Half in Houston...Completely shift training to reduce miles and increase quality. Look what you have accomplished in the last few months - you are gritty and strong - look at what your strengths are. You ran a 1:06:53 half within a FULL! Your speedwork will tell leading up to the half. I believe in you...eye on the PRIZE! Now get ‘er done.

    QD: Houston Full.
    Due to one reason:
a friend of mine has a Marathon PR of 2:24 ( similar to yours )...but also his half PB is only 1:06 flat. Because of that, I dont think that you can cut off 3 minutes in the Half, but i truely believe, that you can cut off 5 minutes in the Full Marathon!
And of course I gotte mention another reason for the Full: relentless! :D
Wish you all the best Seth!
    Greetings from Germany! :)

I think that the answer is Houston. You said it, you need a break. Not only physically but mentally. I'm pretty sure that you will come much stronger for the next challenge and you will definitely make it. You are the best!

QD: half marathon this would allow you to not be too much millage on the body however, this is just coming from a person who races halfs and 10 miles right after each other but never a full. Best of luck you relighted a spark in me that kinda died after a 7 months almost no walking and coming back with a 6:08 mile ( I was a 4:37 before) thank you and keep chasing your goals!

I think Ideally you should have went from Amsterdam to CIM. The amount of people that qualify for olympic trials there is insane. 153 runners last year broke the Olympic Trials Qualifying Time. 162 men ran under 2:30 there as well.
I think you should take a break and wait for Huston but if you were feeling one last chance to throw all your chips in a bucket. CIM has been good to a lot of people. Good luck seth!

  • @Tomatenbrot

    QD: None of them. PATIENCE!
You've been injured. Then you tried to do it in Amsterdam and this is why you had the opportunity 1:59 Kipchoge as a bonus. Finally you ended up with an amazing show in New York. WOW - What a success!
This can't be topped in an US only qualification run with absolutely no chance for you to reach the 2:11:30 (and be one of the best three) to qualify for Tokyo. And adding risk for another injury...
Be patient and recover. While doing this decide for another challenging goal in 2020.
This is a German view on the situation 😉
    Good luck! Enjoy your channel!
