  • Poème électronique (English Translation: "Electronic Poem") is an 8-minute piece of electronic music by composer Edgard Varèse, written for the Philips Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. The Philips corporation commissioned Le Corbusier to design the pavilion, which was intended as a showcase of their engineering progress. Le Corbusier came up with the title Poème électronique,[clarification needed] saying he wanted to create a "poem in a bottle".Varèse composed the piece with the intention of creating a liberation between sounds and as a result uses noises not usually considered "musical" throughout the piece.

No mention of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry or the fact that Stockhausen handled the electrics in Maderna's hard work on Varese's 'Deserts'.
As Stockhausen says in the video, Varese did not have the requisite techniques for 'Poeme Electronique' and it appears that failed to research acquiring it despite the fact that facilities existed in France, Germany, the USA and Britain.
It is fair to say that Philips board members failed to regard the Poeme in the same way as did the composer but they wanted a son et lumiere show in their ghastly building featuring some famous avant-garde figures of the time.
Varese probably over-estimated his importance in general and certainly had little lasting influence.
Much of his music, though, is thrilling to experience live but 'Integrales' probably contains all that he had to offer sonically. I feel that Prof Chou's claims about 'Deserts' are misplaced and he might favour it because he re-vamped it for recorded releases.

Interesting contribution, but How do you know that? Seems an important link with PS concrète music! Amazing
