Been watching Rugby on and off for 15 years from the Super 12 days (and even played for a bit in primary school) but have never been able to really get into it like other sports mainly because I had no clue what was happening around breakdowns and how open-play turnovers happen. So I've made another attempt to try to understand it as the World Cup gets underway. This is was easily the best and clearest explanation I have seen. Thank you.

However, with the advent of kids growing up, playing and watching Rugby, I always get asked what's going on, why is that a foul and generally can't answer. These videos a great companion to the world cup for the casual fan! I found that bit about the contention for the ball being resolved in the first split seconds of the breakdown particularly enlightening.

Watched and played rugby for years, and half the time still did not know what the ruck was going on. Great job explaining even to those " in the know".
A long time ago when I was playing, there was a counter-rucking move called “the flying wedge” which was very effective. Some of the greatest exponents of this were the Scots. Essentially, the back row bound together in a V shape and piled over the ruck,, charging opposition out of the way. It was basically banned because stomping on players on the ground was inevitable as the wedge charged forward and stamping was banned. A few scrapes and bruises for sure, but I always thought there was never a better way to clear out a ruck!
This helped a LOT! Thanks! By the end of my first view (with several due to follow for both my understanding and your analytics) I now understand much more about what I was seeing last season. Can't wait for the season start

When I played rugby at school, the rucking part of the ruck was still in full force - a player could use their feet not only on the ball, but on the player on the ground... I am so glad that's changed from a player safety point of view.

I really like this channel, I have been watching rugby quite a long time and I kind of knew the rules, but it's great to have them explained to you in detail.

If i could make a suggestion, in future videos, it would be helpful to have maybe one or two more examples played in slow motion where you ide tifu what different players are doing (and if theyre doing it well or not). Excellent video, mate. Very clear breakdown of the laws, presented in a logical and straightforward way, with relevant examples to support. I've been watching rugby for years but this really helped my understanding.
I would've liked to have heard more about is the counter-rucking. For example is there any point at which the defending team cannot do this once a ruck has formed? E.g. is there a time limit as to when a counter ruck can be attempted, or as long as the ball is in the ruck is it ok? What are the laws regarding counter rucking? Is it just that the defending team has to push back over the ball all the attacking players in the ruck to affect a turnover?
It would be great to see more videos in this series looking at the laws in other specific parts of the game e.g. mauls, scrums, lineouts, the offside line in open play and kicking duals, and I'm sure there are more. In something like scrums and lineouts for example, what are all the specifics of when the backs have to remain at a distance, and when can they move in? Please keep up the great work.👍
Such a clear description./ Every match I've watched I've really never got the mechanics of the ruck and just let the whistles tell me something happened. Can't wait to watch another match so I can finally see what I was missing

Thanks for explaining the ruck for us. This, as well as the maul scenario were the two aspects if rugby that l didn't fully understand. All l would see are a bunch of guys piling up on each other with the referee's whistle being blown soon after. I now know how and why penalties are awarded in these situations.
i like the game but could hardly understand most of the penalties given during the game and yes ruck is most part of the game! glad i came across your video as it is very clear. still need to watch more games to recognise them instantly though

Great videos in the lead up to the world cup. The kicking out on the full or ground before and beyond or before the 22 is also something that gets a little confusing as a viewer and a big part of the game.

Firstly, I love these videos. They keep popping up in my feed and I live then. Just checking in, though, at about 13 minutes, when the Pumas poacher steals from the All Blacks, he looks to be doing so illegally because he's not supporting his own body weight. I completely understand if the footage you've chosen is there because it clearly shows a poacher etc, and I know you didn't have time to go into detail with the nuances of poaching etc, but I just wanted to point it out as illegal poaching. That said, this is a wonderful overview, and I love the effort and time you put into these videos. Thank you so much!
