It's a beautiful song that although they all had bad feelings when they broke up,they always had that love, respect, missing each other. That's the true heart of the Beatles which is why they will always be known throughout the years. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THE BEATLES!!!

Paul is a certified genius. I don't think we appreciate taking on old demo and creating THAT. It's truly unbelievable. The verse "abuse" didn't work for the message. This is a farewell and goodbye from the Beatles. It's a masterpiece considering what they started with. The strings, drums and guitar work is beyond tasteful. No other band could achieve this. The brilliant video works perfectly for the sendoff.

Upon first listen I was very surprised, because I had to get any preconceptions out of my system. I was thinking it would be another heavy Jeff Lynne influence where every Beatles song has to have that psychedelic, "I am the Walrus" production running through it. But this song came through very grounded and measured without allot of bells and whistles which was a welcomed experience. I really like this song! And I think John would appreciate the restraint Paul used to keep it all within the framework of how he initially constructed it on that demo. Allot of love and respect is apparent on this tune. I think John was singing about Paul and I think Paul finished the song as a love letter back to John to say he loved him too. Its very heartfelt and genuine.

You made some great points Mazzy. For me, it was much better than I expected, however I wanted it to go on a minute or two longer, maybe have a haunting string and piano coda, especially it being the Beatles last single. I think they played it a bit safe. 8/10 for me too..

I am super thankful that I’ve never heard the demo of this song. I had no preconceived notions going into it. On first listen, I was not bowled over. The second listen opened up the subtle grace of the lyrics and the gentle melody to my ears. I feel that this song is a fitting bookend to the love and joy the Beatles have given us for all these years. I am thankful to be here to experience it. 11:38

    ❤In its simplicity, it's a HIT !
How could it not be? The connection from the 70s, 90s, and today, the musical layers, the lyrical message, the fact that it took more than 40 years to see fruition, and now, John and George's spirits returning to complete the Fab Four one more time, is beyond comprehension other than it was by grand design that we have this finale.
All I can say is BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO ! The Beatles aren't The Beatles for nothing - eternally so.
    Peace through music.

I’m not happy about the “I don’t want to lose you” section being edited out of the final version. It was an integral part of the composition and my favorite part of the song. I had really hoped that they would have kept the arrangement of the fan version that has been floating around for years… Thankfully, I have it saved, because it has been methodically scrubbed from the internet.

My thoughts exactly, I'm so dissapointed paul didn't use it. Brought the whole song together and it feels a little repetitive and uninteresting without it. Could've been so much better, or at least a guitar solo or something that did the melody

      I agree!
      Free As Bird
      And
Real Love (which I think could be much better using new technology), are better than this version of Now And Then.
This is not a bad song or bad record.
I just think it could've been closer to the structure of the original demo.
      That would've been much better.
      No need to be alone.

I loved the song and I keep humming it and want to play it again. Then again I did not expect it to be on a par with say strawberry fields etc. Buy hey this is the last one, and was recorded over a 45 year span and some of it on a home tape machine, and with George and John now gone and the others in their 80’s I think maybe people were expecting too much. Yes there could have been a bridge but that may have required Paul to take the lead which I think would have been unwise so for me it is just wonderful as a life long fan to just enjoy and celebrate one last song from the great band that in my view will ever exist. I was truly moved by John,s Vocal which gave me the shiver, and I could feel the yang and yang of the John and Paul combo. If there was one thing I missed it was George’s influence.

I think a fitting end to a amazing group, I like the simple aspect of this song. Love your channel so thank you. cheers Brett Nelson.

It’s funny how everyone interprets things differently - I didn’t find this Beatles version of Now and Then uplifting or upbeat at all. To me it retains the very melancholic vibe of the original demo. The beautiful arrangement with the strings gives it a more ethereal feel, but to me it’s still a very haunting, melancholic track.

I totally get what you're saying. When I heard it I thought Paul wanted to respect the song and not put his "middle 8" on it. A part of me wanted that but I also see the reason not trying to add to it like he did on Free As A Bird. Otherwise our opinions are very similar. I loved it. I'm buying it.

It was about ten years later for me, but "We Can Work It Out" was written on my 6th grade notebook somewhere at the end of the Gerald Ford Era. That summer, when my uncle had me over at his house and handed me a cassette recorder and asked if I wanted to record any of his Charlie Pride or Connie Francis albums and I saw Meet The Beatles somewhere in the corner and I said "that one." I knew who they were.
Side note - I think prior to that I thought the Beatles did "Band On The Run," which was also fascinating because it took a few listens on the the AM radio in our 1969 Nova for me to realize that it wasn't three songs. I can actually go to the spot in my town where I announced to my mother that I figured out that it was ONE BIG SONG. Ha...

Hey Mazzy, thanks for the recounting of those great mid-sixties singles to start this video. Those songs are indeed magical. I was there - I know too. Good insights into the new release versus the "demo" that has been out online for a while. I agree - the "original" had more movements within it, which they (Paul...) should have left in. No question. The new release is sort of redundant, too much sameness. Yes - the bridge! Okay brother, peace out.

I’ve been listening to The Beatles since 1964 and have a ton of their vinyl put away. After actively collecting for decades, I stopped buying several years ago. How much vinyl does anyone need? But I bought the 12-inch single. I’m glad The Beatles salvaged John’s demo and gave it the full treatment it deserved. It’s an emotional, nostalgic, loving look back. And Mazzy, nice same-day review! Thank you

When I listened to the demo for the first time I understood George's words "a little bit" ("it's rubbish"). The song seemed nice to me - it's John... -, but all in all "weak". Then I read an article that resumed an older article, which you may know, this one:
From an interview with Carl Perkins in "Goldmine" magazine. "It's something I'll never forget as long as I live. It happened in February 1981, a few months after John Lennon was killed. I had written a song, 'My old friend', to thank Paul for being kind enough to invite me, together with Stevie Wonder, to the island of Montserrat, where he was recording the album 'Tug of war', in which I play in one of the songs, 'Get it'. Ringo was there too, and it was a fantastic eight days. I arrived in Montserrat by plane, alone; Paul and Linda picked me up in a small private plane and took me over the mountains to George Martin's recording studios, where we spent wonderful days together. (.) The evening before leaving again I wrote a song, which I titled 'My old friend', to thank Paul for the invitation. The text ended like this:
And if we never meet again
This side of life In a little while
    Over yonder
    Where it's peace and quiet
    My old friend
    Won't you think about me
    Every now and then.
The next morning, at ten in the morning, I played it to Paul. I was scheduled to leave for Antigua shortly thereafter, then continue through Atlanta and Nashville to my home in Jackson. After hearing the song, Paul said to me: 'Carl, it's beautiful. Would you sing it again for me?'. 'Of course, mate,' I replied. 'Wait a minute,' he said, and called Linda; the two of them sat on the studio floor and I sang the song again, with my guitar and a small Fender amplifier. I noticed that there was a microphone on, but I didn't pay much attention to it: but George Martin was recording me with it. When I finished singing Paul was crying, he had tears running down his cheeks, and he left the studio so as not to be seen. (...) Linda said to me: 'Carl, thank you very much'. 'I'm sorry,' I said, I didn't mean to make him cry.' And she said: 'He's crying, and he needed it. He couldn't do it anymore after what happened to John. (...) But how did you know?'. 'Know what, Linda? I don't understand what you're talking about. And she: 'There are only two people in the world who know what John's last words to Paul were, when they last saw each other. And it's me and Paul. And now there are three of us, you're here too. I replied 'Girl, you're scaring me. I really don't understand what you're saying.' And she explained to me that the last time John and Paul had said goodbye, at the entrance to the Dakota Building in New York, John had patted Paul on the shoulder and said: 'Think about me every now and then, old friend'.".
So, probably, one of the reasons why McCartney worked so hard to have this song reworked in the version now published is already its title: which are the last words that John said to Paul. On the cassette where the demo of "Now and then" was recorded, if I remember correctly, it said "For Paul" (and the demo is perhaps from the period in which Paul and Linda went to visit him); the words of the text are therefore addressed, in some way, specifically to Paul. So... this song - maybe... - is only a act of love from Paul to John who is telling Paul that he loves him.
In reality, and perhaps for all the feelings involved, listening to the newly released song, although reworked and arranged in ways that disappointed me a bit (don't support the melodic arrangement of those two "simple" repeated initial chords, it's strange if the song is a Beatles song... and I too was expecting a string arrangement more like "Martin" father), despite this, listening to the song over and over again, I now have to admit that I appreciate it better.

I had a similar take. My initial reaction after about 6 listens is that I wished there was a bridge to change up the space, emotion, and momentum even more. Hearing at lower volume (listen #6) helped open it up, which was better. But I found it dirge-like and sad overall. Watching the debut of Free as a Bird gave me goosebumps back then (love that bridge and segue into George's guitar!). Normally Coleman would be here right now so we could listen together, so thinking of him, too.

hey Mazzy, I agree with you. I could tell you about my history growing up with The Beatles. Im 60, so you and I are around the same age. Im very happy that it happened and I am glad its out there. I was disappointed with the compression of the recording. How too many things sounded "mashed" . I don't understand in this day and age of recording technology why we still 'compress' so much. I am not sure John finished the lyrics. I'm sure he didn't. But, for what they are....they make me pause and make me wonder who he was singing to. His brothers in the Beatles, or Yoko, or someone else.

Ultimately I enjoyed the song and it's actually been in my head for days. I did wonder why they ditched that middle section. My criticism is that it feels like more of a Lennon demo (since it was laid down in 1977) plus all the AI stuff in the video really did not need to be there. But it's pretty sweet and amazing that all 4 could be on a track posthumously.

Now and Then has a big theme and the song revolves around it and never moves away from it. All the construction around it is building the mood around the main theme. Lennon's voice comes out of the space, crystal clear, Ringo's being pure class and wrapping it up. It's a simple song, with a great atmosphere, it sounds humble, sad, nostalgic. Thanks for the review!

We mostly all LOVE the new Beatles last single, but after hearing the orchestra in the documentary, would have been nice to fade the song with the orchestra slowly up to the front in volume, with Pauls bass, Ringo's drums, etc.. BUT still crazy LOVE the outcome! I wish Ringo would have rerecorded his current sounding drums on Love Me Do. The snare drum in this stereo version is too muffled, but as great as it sounds in stereo, I can't wait to hear She Loves You in stereo.

I was interested to hear your review as I have watched a few of your top 10's before.
Rain is a brilliant track. The bass is so heavy and slides around and just pumps solid through whatever it's played on. It's so psychedelic and they look so cool like The Byrds. Very hip and stands up today. It's such a simple song and that Indian influence is just great. They also break away that bit more from the boyband thing or you can see inklings that is going to happen. Maybe it was the LSD
Now and Then.....it did bring goosebumps for me. It is a grower....it has real Abbey Road vibes I reckon. There is a surprise minor chord change that is very Abbey Road in the instrumental and so lovely with the ahhs. The harmonies are very Beatles and also quite Kinks.
I wasn't so keen on the start of it at first but it has grown. The way it goes into the verse from the chorus in terms of key changes works to me. It has been rolling around in my head as I have played it a lot. The ending a bit disappointing but then it does have I am the Walrus vibes to it as a plus. It's not too long as well which I think does it a favor.
I didn't think it was quite as strong as Free as a Bird. That song has that piano on the 4/4 that is really Beatlesy.....it has all the elements you want from a Beatles song.
Now and Then sounds a bit more contemporary in style at times with those little guitar rhythm licks and I think that is why it worked for me. It could stand up as a song on the radio if you didn't know it was the Beatles ( if you ask me ).
Having said that I do think it is a full circle to end it all. It's quite ironic and apt the title is 'Now and then'. I say thank god we were able to get one last gem.

I really don’t understand why anyone would have gone into this song with any amount of expectations - you’re inevitably going to wind up disappointed. This song is just a nice, pleasant, bittersweet, slightly melancholic yet hopeful/joyful coda to a legendary run. It’s not going to stack up against their catalog because I don’t think it’s really meant to.
And lol @ you rating it an “8 to 8.5 out of 10” on Rachel’s stream but now rating it as a “7.5 to 8 out of 10,” while also saying you’re enjoying it *more* now after multiple listens. 🤔😂

I was pleasantly surprised. It works better than I thought it would. They've taken a demo, a fragment and McCartney, as John wanted, worked some of his 'magic' on it. I think the Beatles harmonies, Lennon and McCartney together, created a new, combined, third voice, which defined their vocal sound and made them unique; and that's before one gets to their incredibly productive songwriting partnership, where they helped and supplemented each other so well. The two of them created something bigger and better than the sum of their parts, which became, at their best, a form of genius.

Hey Mazzy, funny you mention We Can Work It Out. It's the harmonies between John and Paul...and John Paul and George which truly makes up the Beatles "sound".....of course Ringo's drums and "arguably" his "happy" and pleasant voice (Good Night, With A Little Help From My Friends)
I was there on those ABC 3 night dedication to the Anthology. I just remember being so moved (Not Blue Moves...LOL!!) by the video....from a visual point but also from just the song Free As A Bird itself and was quite emotional.
People forget about the "punk strings" that Glass Onion and Piggies conveyed.
Now and Then strings are more...hmmm..."forgiving" type of strings???
You can't compare Across The Universe with a mere "demo" as Now and Then and Free As A Bird. Paul, and Ringo and George were trying to uplift a shitty demo that John had. They are virtually taking a small "bit" and creating a new song which is exactly how they worked back in their day.
Non-musicians and Non-recording/mixing engineers can't appreciate this apart from being a huge Beatles fan.
    It doesn't matter.
    Who cares???
    This is awesome!!!
This is a TRUE celebration and a part of history that we are experiencing now.
I have my Red and Blue on order and I cannot wait to hear Now and Then and the other 'remixes" on my own system.
It's an AMAZING time to be a Beatles fan.
Guess what Mazzy??...apart from your disdain for Blue Moves (hahah!!) ?? As a fellow Beatles fan??......Well...I kinda luv you too...
    Be good!!
    D

A very balanced reaction, Mazzy, and it's hard to disagree.
I enjoyed the track, but felt it was possibly just a little bit too safe and respectful.
I loved McCartney's bass line - when you turn up the bass and focus on that it's mesmerising and intensely moving. On the other side, I wasn't quite so moved by the slide solo, which followed the melody without being as expressive as Harrison's post-Beatles slide work, but the deliberate and respectful restraint of the solo was still somehow poignant and beautiful.
You mentioned the strings, which were lush and beautiful, but somehow too warm and bland. I get what you said about wanting a slightly darker feel. There's a heavy melancholy to Lennon's vocal deliveryon the song, but the musical arrangement worked around that rather than following or echoing the idea. I understand why McCartney, Ringo and Giles Martin were ao respectful with their approach, and I think that's unavoidable with the recognition of this being their last official song. If it hadn't been, then I think they would have been bolder and produced something more memorable.
Let's see how the song stands up when it's played a year from now or in a decade...

On order! The first Beatles single I bought was in 1967 age 7 was Strawberry fields my favourite single of all time! I wanna hold your hand was the first Beatles song I remembered! Now age 63 the last Beatles single! I still have the excitement for this single! Great video Mazzy! It's the Beatles but it isn't really the Beatles as a unit it's technology! But it's what the Beatles did! Use or create the technology! A fitting end I think! Sorry I'm rambling!! 😆

Thanks for the positive. That's exactly what I needed. I share the exact same memories about the 45s, and that's the best part of your review. Here's the thing -- I think John's song and the video are commercially manipulated to be a tribute to the band, a genuflection to the other three Beatles from John, and that annoys me. I'm sure that was the farthest thing from his mind when he recorded that demo. At best, to my ears, it's a John solo song reminiscent of the 'Plastic Ono Band 1st LP' with all the layerings and orchestrations added on which is precisely what Paul hated about 'The Long and Winding Road'.
The tricky slick orchestral finish is not very Beatly at all, and oddly, it's one of the best parts of 'Now and Then'... but euffa my yakkin'!! - thanks for your take on the matter. You softened my discontent. Paris loves you!

My main problem is to call this a Beatles song, it is not. It is ok what they did, but this is NOT Beatles, this is a Frankenstein that was possible to do, so why not. To sell it as Beatles makes it awkward to me.

I've only heard the song once or twice. My initial thoughts are that it feels more like a solo John song in many respects, something that might have appeared on one of the first three solo albums. I don't know what the quibbling about the slide break's about....it is what it is - a rough demo that has been miraculously enhanced utilising the latest digital tech. In terms of the performance I would have preferred Lennon's voice alone on the verses, with maybe McCartney in the refrain. They used to piece together song ideas, so why not a middle eight here? - ala 'We Can Work It Out'....John's harmonium part, which as you say, makes the blood run a little faster. One of their finest moments for me. All that said, I'm sure my thoughts will evolve as time goes on...but what a wonderful thing to have more Fabs in 2023!

What bothers me is that the composer of the song is not there to do the arrangements and mixing. I don't think Lennon would have done it this way. At least the demo makes me think that. I like the song, but I take it as a Paul production on a forgotten John demo. I don't feel it like a Beatle song.

As a note McCartney didn't add the bridge in FAAB, that was always in Lennon's home demo th-cam.com/video/IRmGf8YpumU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BTXUVcE94WzgHzDH The other point i'd make is that all 3 of these tracks were unfinished, both musically and lyrically, home demos. We don't know for sure how they would have developed if Lennon was still with us. Saying all that i really enjoyed your perspective and I have to say initially i liked Now and Then but after multiple listens i quite love it. Time will tell but i'm pleased with what the Threatles did. I'd love them to remaster FAAB and Real Love using this technology to get a clear Lennon vocal on them as well.

Such an interesting perspective. I wonder if had been "Lennon-McCartney" collaboration how much different it would have been. It seemed much of the Beatles magic was the give and go of their songwriting. Perhaps Paul didn't want to mess with a song of John's.

out of its solemnity and resolves it positively.

I've heard that "sounds like an elo/Jeff Lynne version on youtube for a long long time, which I admire a lot. Like you mention... removing that middle was a shocker to me. And yes... could had been darker for sure. Seems they had the orchestra to blacken the overall tone. I'm in the middle on this. Lennon's voice is great! But something that is in that youtube version is missing here. Do I like it? Of course! Its BEATLES :) Don't get me started on the artwork though. I dislike it so much, I had my own sent in for printing today. Tone wise? I find it very hot at the beginning and during the slide break. The drums almost get lost in that section. I was hoping John voice would had been dryer than it is on the record too. EQ'd with more balance as it seems to hit tin. George Martin isn't around this time. Bottom line? New Beatles track. So really, my complaints don't stand up against that. But the cover art?

..yes, talking about the Beatles is sometimes like talking about Shakespeare - it can get too reverential and precious. I first thought that this new song was an album track by Tame Impala - it lacks focus, rambles around a bit and sounds listless..it’s also a good argument for the Beatles breaking up when they did -when they they put a full stop at the end of the ‘60’s. Music has moved on, making this ‘new’ song a collectors curio and an unnecessary addition to the Fabs catalogue..

I had mixed emotions seeing the sleeve and the 30 seconds trailer, a bit disappointed.

They made the best of it, but it wasn’t an amazing song to begin with. I can see why John would have left it on the shelf in 1978. You are so right, it needed a twist in the song after the guitar solo. Instead it drones on a bit. It sounds like a mediocre album track at best.

Please listen to the song and follow it with Paul live with Ringo on Drums doing "Cosmically Consciousness" available on TH-cam. That would've been the ideal single for this song, not the B-side of Love Me Do. Talk about a possible double A-side. But I agree. I was familiar with the demo, as well as the fan-made recording that Apple featured up til now. I loved the change-ups. This one went instead for something smoother, steadier with, I believe, very well-done orchestration. Still, not dazzling or trend-setting. I enjoyed it, but not blown-away as well. I would've liked it better with the chorus that was removed. Will I buy it? Probably. It'll be nice to watch it spin on the turntable. I'm glad they made it. I think it will grow on people and fans alike
