I am 83 and still love hearing Jolson sing. I saw the original movie and have copies of both movies. I grew hearing about him from my Uncle and had the original records to here on my phonograph. What a great job TH-cam did in making these summaries !!
I had the Anniversary Song played at our 50 th anniversary my husband and I danced to it. It was my only request, every since I first saw the movie as a teen.
Jolson was, still is, and always will be a true superstar. One of the all time great innovative show business legends. And Mr. Parks truly nails it in these performances.
The best singer there ever was. My brother sang like him brilliant. He won many competitions. There is something about Jolson I never get tied of him. The world greatest entertainer.

Born in the 60s I was blessed to be different from my peers whose parents were Baby Boomers born 1945ish as mine born late 20s/30s meant my grandparents were born 1888 to 1909 and I grew up listening to greats like All Jolson and wake up singing these songs still!
+Kathleen Gorman Larry Parks captured the mannerisms [and exaggerated them so you less looked at Larry and saw Jolson, who didn't look at all like him. It worked. The sequel is slavish to the storyline. In the first movie, it actually is the real Jolson in the long shot; in the sequel it's Larry Parks retelling the story [think about that for a second]. The point is that on the long shot, you couldn;t see that Al was now in his 60's [He was popular prior to World War ! !] If people didn't mind him looking his age, he could have done the movie himself, but they figured they needed someone to play the proper age. The entire backstory is totally made up, and in the second movie, they admit it. The wedding waltz is an ancient Jewish tradition; they added words and it became a hit for Jolson, so they added the fake parents to make it make sense. One more tidbit: Most people think the first talking picture was The Jazz Singer which is arguably somewhat autobiographical to Jolson in and of itself, and technically it is part sound, it's actually the first transitional silent/sound movie. But actually, Jolson stars in the REAL first talkie, a short consisting of him dressed in blackface on a farm [with live chickens on the stage] called A Plantation Act. It was done a couple of years earlier and was eventually restored. Some of Jolson's early work was a bit risque for its time [pre-WW I] such as The Spaniard that blighted me life which has a lot of innuendo [reenacted briefly in the movie] but not enough to show the words, and a favorite of mine with a few zingers called Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday Night? [Or who paid the rent for Mrs. Rip van Winkle, when Rip van Winkle went away. These songs literally would not be allowed later when censorship hit Hollywood in the 30's. [The Spaniard comes from a movie totally lost because the English singer of the same song sued and won a rights lawsuit and all known copies were destroyed. But we do have the 1913 RCA recording at least. OK, one more you can use as a trick question: Which RCA recording artist recorded the huge hit Are you lonesome tonight? in the 1950's? Of course they will always get it wrong and say Elvis Presley. Elvis recorded his version in 1960. Jolson had already had a big hit of the same song 10 years earlier [just before he died].
My mother was a piano teacher so grew up in a musical family. I had never heard of Jolson before in my life when my mother took me to see the Jolson story after WW2. I was mesmerised by his voice and am now addicted to it. I watch both films at least once a year. Larry Parks should have got the Oscar for the Jolson Story.....Thanks for putting this together.

I was so "mesmerized" I stayed for the 2nd showing. After awhile I started sing with him, and the usher through me out. That began my interesAND t in doing impersonation. AND SO IT GOES. ED HAYES
What a crying shame that Larry was "blacklisted" and couldn't work in Hollywood again. He and his wife Betty Garrett did club work. Then Parks established a construction company. He lived to be 60. He was magical on screen. I also own both fims. They inspired me to go into show business.

Wonderful job of putting together a short synopsis of two great motion pictures of the great Al Jolson. When I saw these movies back in the 1950's, I found it difficult to separate Larry Parks from Al Jolson. They appeared as one. The technology available at that time wasn't as it is today. The studio had to spend many extra manhours to accomplish this success. Al Jolson was one of my mom's favorite entertainers and he also became a favorite of mine. I really enjoyed being captivated again by both these movies that storied his life and his God given talent. Thank you

Rudy Wissler did all the singing parts for Scotty Beckert, Virginia Rees did the singing for Evelyn Keyes and cantor Saul Silverman did all the singing for Ludwig Donath.
The progression of Jolson's career as depicted in the film was essentially accurate, although his life was sanitized for the biographical movie. Larry Parks was not the initial choice of Columbia studios to portray Jolson; Harry Cohn offered the role to Cagney, who was probably too old, and to Danny Thomas, before selection Parks, a contract player. The choice was inspired. While Parks didn't actually resemble Jolson, he captured Jolson's zest and enthusiasm for performing and his lip syncing of Jolson's singing voice was brilliant.
