  • In this sequel to The Jolson Story, we pick up the singer's career just as he has returned to the stage after a premature retirement. But his wife has left him and the appeal of the spotlight isn't what it used to be. This time Jolson trades in the stage for life in the fast lane: women, horses, travel. It takes the death of Moma Yoelson and World War II to bring Jolson back to earth - and to the stage. Once again teamed with manager Steve Martin, Jolson travels the world entertaining troops everywhere from Alaska to Africa. When he finally collapses from exhaustion it takes young, pretty nurse Ellen Clark to show him there's more to life than "just rushing around".

Larry Parks deserved the Academy award for his performance as Al Jolson. I still watch him often.

He did what he loved! We should all do what we love! He was a strong man who had a voice that intertained the world. He is one of the greatest singers that ever happened! Now he's an immortal. Judy Herrera

I can Listen to Al Johnson all day. His voice is enchanting. So full, so strong and so heavy. His songs are all Beautiful and he sings them Passionately, but The Way He sings MUMMY is an Exception.

Didn't finish, Jolson wanted the second movie to show that he finally became happily married to Erle, at long last.

Larry Parks did his best work as Jolson in both movies. He would practice hours on end to get the gestures and mannerisms right. Little know fact is that Parks should have gotten the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, but a guy named McCarthy put Parks on the list of Communist in Hollywood.

Jolson initially wanted to portray himself in The Jolson Story; the Studio convinced him that he wouldn't be credible as the young singer in his 20s. Parks was cast as Jolson and, as indicated, was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and lost to Frederic March for Wyler's The Best Years Of Our Lives; his other competition was Laurence Olivier. After the release of Jolson Sings Again, Parks appeared before the HUAC, and acknowledged a brief membership in the Communist Party in the 30s; he had since repudiated the Party and he was compelled to "name names" in an effort to salvage his film career. He never worked in movies or TV until John Huston cast him in a pivotal supporting role opposite Montgomery Clift in Freud in 1962.

Jolson was wonderful, but he was a product of the 1920's and by the late 40's, the overarranged, big band music just doesn't conjure up any of the 20's feel or sound--the in those years the wardrobists didn't give a single concession to 20's styles, it might as well have been 1949.
