  • Sicut cervus • Music by G.P. da Palestrina • Sung by The Gesualdo Six, directed by Owain Park • Recorded in the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral • Audio by Joseph Wicks

Sicut cervus is likely the best known of Palestrina's motets. In it is embedded the beauty and dignity for which Palestrina's music is known and judged to be the ideal of Renaissance counterpoint. The motet's polyphonic flow and gentle melodic arches contain a quiet drama. While the motet's word-painting is not overt, neither is it hidden. There is a deep feel for the words' meaning as the voices begin quietly in imitation for the words Sicut cervus (As the hart). At the word desiderat (longs), rhythm quickens and the line rises to its peak at the word: fontes (streams); as the words seek their object, so the melodic lines seek their goal. As the text's thought turns toward the self with the words ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus (Thus longs my soul for Thee, God), shorter motives in closer imitation and intensifying dissonance patterns express the human soul's fervent desiring and end the motet. - from notes © James Olesen
    - - -
Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontem aquarum,
ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus.
As a deer longs for springs of water,
so my soul longs for you, O God

The way the alto line is accentuated at 1:00 is sublime. Most performances it gets lost among the voices.

That is one of my most favorite "throwaway" lines in all of vocal music! Totally gratuitous and absolutely necessary. Of course it's an alto line (and, of course, I was an alto)!

Who knows but some not very distance age, tiring of orchestral sonorities and operatic romances, may find again in such music as Palestrina’s a depth of feeling, a profound and placid flow of harmony, better fitted to express the soul of man cleansed of pride in reason and power, and standing again humble and fearful before the engulfing infinite.

When God created the whole universe in six days, at each day He said: This is good... but on the last day, when He contemplated the whole creation together, He said: everything is too good. Beauty is the diversity in unity because God is three but One... and He is the essence of Beauty so to speak.
