    I was looking for a video exactly like this. I’m not using tape but I am trying to emulate the workflow using a computer and outboard mixing gear, and this answered all the questions I had

    Hello from Westchester, NY. I've always wanted to record to tape, mainly because of workflow; I like the idea of committing to a sound rather than tweaking it in the mix later. In fact, for my home recordings, I gave up on using computer DAWs and bought a Tascam digital multi for this reason. Nothing kills my vibe more than staring at a computer screen for hours.

      That's awesome, I know a lot of folks who feel the same way. Check out Boy Golden, he records at home with an affordable tape machine and has brought some of this stuff into the studio to mix :)

      there is an effect i've found with recording also that decisions get exponentially longer to make as the process goes on. The more committed and vibey a recording is to start the easier it is to work with down the line.

    People have a problem with it because mf's don't explain how to hook it up they are petty that's why daws existed because engineers and producers where very petty back then. It was competitive the more people didn't know how to do something the more it was easier for major studios and producers to thrive. Now the older producers and engineers are upset because people can easily find out how.

    • @sempertern
      @sempertern 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Allious131 it's still not the same thing. everyone has their own workflow anyway. with daws, you could almost imitate by having the same plugins, with these things, even if you do have the same exact setup,, it's simply impossible to imitate

    Looks like a really nice setup. My home studio also set up for tape. Actually that is all I have, I don’t have a DAW or anything else at all, a Stephens 821b and an Ampex 440c 1/4”. The 821b is very stable and doesn’t take a lot of maintenance. I do most of my edits by bouncing between my 2 track and the 24 track using a Lynx synchronizer. It takes a bit of time but moving notes, lines, verses is definitely possible.

    It's a good medium for real musicians, who can actually play, particularly when they make decisions up front and commit to them. It's probably not so great for what a lot of folks do these days, which is closer to data processing than music making.
    I'm a moderately good musician (once good, slowly becoming good again.) I have to use a computer, but I treat it like a tape deck. I try to record everything with effects and processing and 'automation' (or manualomation as I call it) all committed to. No editing, and no MIDI if it can be avoided.
    Will it be as inhumanly slick as something edited to death on a computer? No. but it'll be me.

    I would be interested in recording to tape. But cartoons have taught me that it's semi frequently used by villains to start villainous fires of villany. Have you taken appropriate measures to prevent such things from happening?

    • @nofunclub2604
      @nofunclub2604  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's often hard to know when and where such villains will appear and what form they will take. We have taken the precautions we can.

    Question: When copying/bouncing from tape to tape and again to tape, does not the sound quality deteriorate to some degree with every copying process? 🤔

    • @nofunclub2604
      @nofunclub2604  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bouncing from one tape to another ads noise every generation yes, but we don't really ever do that here aside from going to a 2 track master tape. Going from tape to digital doesn't add extra noise though.

    How about mix recall on the console ?
    (Trick question, sorry, I couldn't resist !).

    • @nofunclub2604
      @nofunclub2604  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The answer for me is, avoid having to recall as much as humanly possible, commit wherever you can , move to the computer when it's neccassary for the project😆. No artists really have time or budget for recalling these days even if they say they do, that's been our experience.

    • @RocknRollkat
      @RocknRollkat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nofunclub2604 Thank you for the reply !
      In the 'old days' there were several attempts to make recallable consoles, and perhaps you've heard of people taking polaroids of the console settings in a vain attempt to store settings photographically.
      Interesting that time a a determining factor these days. I go back to the days when people like Brian Wilson would spend weeks in a studio on one project.
      Also the Beatles, etc.
      Different times !
      Best of luck to you !
