  • Claire and Walker react to U2 - Where the streets have no name , for the first time. Their analysis is quite interesting. Stick around until the end to hear it all.
    "Where the Streets Have No Name" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the opening track from their 1987 album The Joshua Tree and was released as the album's third single in August 1987. The song's hook is a repeating guitar arpeggio using a delay effect, played during the song's introduction and again at the end. Lead vocalist Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person's religion and income based on the street on which they lived, particularly in Belfast. During the band's difficulties recording the song, producer Brian Eno considered erasing the song's tapes to have them start from scratch. (Source: wikipedia)

    I can understand why today's youth would find the intro too long, we do live in a world where everything is very transient and everything is happening at a breakneck speed. For us older people, that was arguably the highlight of the song, the way it slowly builds to this amazing guitar part is what made it great. I personally think it's the best intro of all time, from any band.

    The guitarist is Edge, he's more of a rhythmic style and ... the singer is Bono, whose voice is pushed by the band. These guys have the unique experience of really being the voice of the Irish people during the end of the bloody civil war.. to the world that is. It's cool that your Dad brought up the origins of the song because it's a fairly important part of the song and reality. Keep in mind, during the later part of the 70's, 80's and 90's there was a barbwire fence and guards keeping the Northern Irish from the Irish people. Families were broken up, and bloody terrorist attacks rocked the country. The IRA (Irish Republican Army) killed about 1700 people during it's efforts to get Northern Ireland back under Irish control. They were disarmed and disbanded in a peace treaty in 1997 but the bulk of the leadership of the political wing formed Sinn Fein.. a major political party in Ireland today. There are growing concerns about Brexit that are causing a potential return to form though... as Ireland is part of the EU and have to renegotiate with the EU on British trade, immigration, etc. The border with Northern Ireland was almost reclosed and IRA splinter groups are starting to arm up, which could spark tensions again if negotiations go poorly. Definitely an area to keep an eye on. Keep in mind though, the British weren't innocent in all this and really have been extremely oppressive over the long term so the lines between 'freedom fighter' and 'terrorist' are blurry at best with the IRA.

    May 3, 1985 in Hollywood, Florida: the first time I ever met a rock star when Bono wandered behind the arena where the concert was played that night and came over to my car that was parked there and we drank a couple of Miller Lite's together with a few other U2 fans. Same thing happened the next night too. U2 hadn't quite hit the big time yet. But Live Aid occurred just a couple of months later. U2 became legendary with their performance at Live Aid. But I'll never forget drinking beer with Bono 2 nights in a row back in 1985.

    According to Brian Eno, the producer, this song was extremely difficult to produce. The arrangement was written on a blackboard because it was so complex. Eno became so frustrated trying to mix the track that he considered destroying the tape and starting over.

    • @ManuelRuiz-xi7bt
      @ManuelRuiz-xi7bt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not that complex. It's just that he 6 note guitar pattern in the intro and outro are in 3/4 and the rest of the song is in 4/4. The transition is exactly at 1:36, two bars before the bass comes in. Apparently the band kept on having trouble at his point and Eno had to be pointing at a whiteboard for the count.
      Also 7:43: it's not Ireland where the streets literally don't have names, it's the US. This LP was the band's attempt at conquering the US.

    • @continentalaquatics2725
      @continentalaquatics2725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plus, it had multiple overdubs on it. The arrangement turned out to be easy to replicate live. The Edge just switches from the 3/4 arpeggio intro to the 4/4 strumming that is only being played on the 3 highest strings and droned on the open D string. Most of what the Edge is playing there when he begins strumming only differs by one note. My band used to cover this song about 25 years ago. We didn’t do it any justice, but as a guitar player, the transitions weren’t too difficult and the rest of the band had no trouble counting themselves in and playing in time (our drummer did play along to a click track though).

    • @continentalaquatics2725
      @continentalaquatics2725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Manuel Ruiz I heard a few variations of the story. One was that one could tell if an area in Ireland was a Protestant or Catholic neighborhood based on the street names. Another was that the lyrics were inspired by a trip Bono took to Africa with his wife, Ali, and none of the streets were named. The third variation I heard was about America having street names in lieu of numbers (which isn’t the case in most of New York City).
      I’m not sure which one is true. It could possibly be an amalgam of all 3 stories.

      Dead right. There's a bit of a musical family tree thing going on here, especially with the Christian connection. In the mid 90s there was a Christian band called Cutting Edge from the UK (later called Deliriou5) which the New Musical Express (I think) called 'born again U2'! They really did change the vibe of Christian music at the time, and well into the 2000s, to become much more anthemic and 'epic' sounding. So the recognition of that influence is absolutely spot on in this video! Have you heard any Deliriou5?

    Happy that you guys did this band and song. I always used to go along with the crowd and hate on U2 even though I never really listened to them. I finally gave them a chance and they are absolutely incredible musicians, and I have been getting into them very slowly. The Edge is such a unique guitarist and I love his style, which is filled with very clean sounding tones blended with heavy delay and repetition (if he didn't repeat it as much, it wouldn't sound the same, it works with the delay to great effect, same thing goes for if the delay was taken away on most songs.) This was actually my first time listening to more than the intro of this song (well, I've probably heard it before, let's say my first solid listen) , and I'm not disappointed at all, it was great. If you guys are planning another reaction to U2, I'd recommend either "New Years Day" or "Pride (In The Name Of Love)". Looking forward to future videos!

U2 admitted openly and with humour that it wasn't a fair portrayal of what happened that day - that they won because they had the power of edit to create the illusion. I got into this album lying in the sun in Malta and it always reminds me of severe sunburn that I suffered as a result . Your description of the song's meaning is almost correct but it was the streets in Ethiopia that have no names, not in streets in Ireland, and therefore they could not be used to distinguish between classes and religions as they did in Belfast. Lead singer man, Bono, Paul David Hewson - he answers to all of them.

    The street naming actually was about identifying Christian sects in Northern Ireland: Catholic or Protestant, relating to a battle that's gone on for centuries (look up the Protestant Reformation for more historical background). If you guys jog, this is a great running song. I'd have it running through my head when I jogged back in the day in the early '90s, when I was in fighting shape.

    hahaha. You guys are about the age I was when this came out. Everyone went crazy for a minute like they were the Beatles I remember - and I'm sure you know who The Beatles are. If you read up on it you will realize that Joshua Tree was one of the best selling and popular records of all time, right there with Dark Side of the Moon and Sgt Peppers.

  • @bradleyard4195
    @bradleyard4195 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Edge is a master at using digital delay and reverb to craft various guitar textures, and had a very unique sound back in the early to mid 80's. So many people ended up copying his sound that it became a cliché, and he all but abandoned it by the 90's.
    From what I've read, this song was meant as a rebuke of the divide between Irish catholics and protestants, and the religious violence that existed in Ireland years ago. It infuriated Bono that people would go to war simply based on religion.
    You guys had it right that, in their native Dublin, you could tell what someone's religion and social status were by what street they lived on (as well as what street you should avoid, lest you should end up beaten to a pulp). He wanted those walls to be torn down and for people to accept each other regardless of all that.
    Sadly, it's been over 33 years since this came out, and we're still not there yet.

    Fascinating to hear your almost instant recognition of the comparisons to "Christian" music. U2 is not a "Christian" band. All of their music is secular. However, they are, as it happens, unashamed Christians - Bono especially since he is the singer and the voice for the band. They've never lived like hedonist rock stars (not that there's anything wrong with that :-D ). Thanks for the honest and, as usual, awesome reaction!

    • @JoeVideoed
      @JoeVideoed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, U2 could be considered quasi-Christian because they put Biblical references in some of the lyrics (or at times just reference Jesus & God), but aren't explicitly asking people to pray in concert every 30 mins or talking about their faith at every turn. Also, Adam doesn't strike me as terribly religious; he never joined the others in the Shalom Fellowship in the early 80s. AAR, 1 of the greatest rock bands of all time. This song's opening still give me chills over 30 years later (sorry Walker, but I think the beginning length is perfect, there's a great crescendo effect to it).

    The song that defined U2. In fact, the whole album did that. The Joshua Tree was a huge thing at the time. I remember it very clearly. Like many seminal songs and sounds, this has inspired and influenced many, many artists since. The history behind this song is incredibly involved, of course. It's true to say that the song is a result of hundreds of years of social and cultural development in Irish history. A perfect example of how powerful music can be and what great music can represent.

    Bono explains the title by saying that, in Dublin, you could tell where a person not only lived, but also what religion they were, by what street they lived on. His desire was to cry out and say, "I want to be somewhere where the streets don't have names, so nobody knows where you come from, or what you believe in".
    The opening starts off interestingly, in that it begins in 5/4 time, then has to switch to 4/4 time for the body of the song. The fact of it sounding like a church song would have much to do with this song being a prayer to God for peace. This is why, when you watch the performance of this song at the 2002 Super Bowl just after 9/11, you hear him quoting from Psalm 15: 15
    "Lord, open my lips, that I may shew forth thy praise..."
