I met my wife Oct. 10th 1987. About a month later was out, this song played and while dancing I said, tell me a Sweet Little Lie, she said, I'll marry you. Well, Jan 7th 1988 we were married. 34 years later, 4 kids, 5 grandkids, this song still brings me back to that night.

@@stevovimy Unfortunately, that's so true. It wasn't until I'd been a fan of the Rumours line-up for years that I discovered the real beginnings of the band. "Green Manalishi" is a masterpiece. Christine McVie sang lead on several of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits -- "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", and "You Make Loving Fun" stand out among others. One aspect of "Little Lies" that I like a lot is how the background vocals so perfectly complement the lead vocals while retaining the distinct sound of each vocalist throughout. Off the top of my head I can only think of a handful of bands who were capable of pulling that off -- The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Band, The Traveling Wilburys, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Three Dog Night, The Monkees perhaps. But I'm not keeping score.

The album you're listening to, "Rumors", was written and recorded while the couples in the band (Christine and John McVie, as well as Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) were breaking up and had started hooking up with other members of the band (in a couple of cases). 'Tango In The Night' has aged so well .. I listened to it the other day in its entirety on a Bose Companion Series III for speakers and a Audio-Technica AT150ANV Frankencart for vinyl playback and it sounds better than I can ever remember .. It's kinda amazing what Buckingham was able to pull off with all the internal issues going on within the band, and there was a lot of them .. But he used his own material that was intended for his solo project and put it into 'Tango In The Night' and it really showed his true colors as an artist and a part of Fleetwood Mac .. Stevie was far from 100% during these times, along with Mick, but I tell you what Chrissie couldn't miss in '87 .. As someone mentioned she could sing the phonebook and it would be beautiful

I love Christine's voice. She sang lead on a lot of the band's hits. Stevie's voice is also great, and for me she steals the background vocals, making me anticipate when she's going to sing again. That's one of the cool things you can do in a song when you have a talented vocalist hanging back to do backgrounds, like in Heart's "These Dreams." That one is sung by the guitar playing sister, and Ann, normally lead, really boosts it with her backgrounds. Do some more of Fleetwood Mac's hits with Christine singing, like "Don't Stop," "You Make Loving Fun," "Say You Love Me," "Hold Me," and "Over My Head." (No particular order there.)

I so agree. I think, back in the day when I listened to FM when the records first came out (Rumours just before I went to University), it was Christine's songs that I liked the best. True, 'Go You Own Way' is something special to me, but overall, that's how I felt. I thought Stevie Nicks was a bit too weird.
Now, reaction channels only listen to Stevie songs and they think that's all Fleetwood Mc is. With any luck, others will pick this up!
Having said that, my favourite Stevie song is on Tango In The Night - Seven Wonders. I just love the whole album.

Stevie was pissed that she couldnt sing the lead, but Lindsey Buckingham said it was written for Christines voice, and the song was structured for Stevie and Lindsey to sing the background. Lindsey Buckingham is a guitar player, vocalist, and lyrical genius.

Mick Fleetwood (drums), John Mcvie (bass), Christine McVie (keyboards and vocals), Lindsey Buckinghan (guitars and vocals) and Stevie Nicks (vocals): One of the most talented line-up in a band of the pop/rock history! The last two members (wich were a couple in the past) have interesting solo carreers. You reacted already to "Edge of Seventeen! from Stevie, now you may reacto to a song called "Trouble", from Lindsey. And of course, others from Fleetwood Mac like "You Make Loving Fun", "Gipsy", "Hold Me" and "Seven Wonders".

Lex, I've been blessed with seeing your mom on your channel. This version of the group was VERY popular back in the 70's, selling over 40 MILLION copies of the Rumours album alone. It was the #3 album of 1977 and #6 for the 70's. So, I'll just bet you, your mom knows these songs, even if she doesn't remember it, or the group, by name. So MANY people had this album, or had at least heard the songs, so she might even be able to sing along with some of the songs on the album.
Their previous, self-titled album only sold 7,480,000, though it DID rank #5 for 1975. However, their previous incarnation of the band (before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined) only sold 500,000 copies. So, this band was extremely well known/played back then.

Check out some early Fleetwood Mac featuring Peter Green on lead vocals and guitar. He was the main songwriter then also. They were huge at the back end of the 60s with hits like Man of the World, Albatross, Oh Well, Black Magic Woman (original). Then he gave it all up after a bad acid trip. The other 2 guitarist in the original lineup also left in unusual circumstances (1 joined a cult for example). The bassist and drummer (John McVie and Mick Fleetwood) continued and it was 5 or 6 years later when they made it big again after recruiting Stevie Nicks, Lyndsay Buckingham and Christine McVie. Then there was alsorts of other drama with this line up. But yeah, react to some of the Peter Green stuff, you will think it's an entirely different band, but it's still great!

The 80s were a strange time where you had new music technology with synthesizers popping up and a pop culture evolution affected by Mtv. You saw a lot of 60s and 70s bands awkwardly trying to keep up and stay relevant. I think this song was an example of a great band taking advantage of what the time gave them without compromising their sound or their identity.
I loved how they didn't pick a front person to represent the band and they didn't replace Mick with a drum machine.
This reminded me of Christine McVie's "Love Will Show Us How" video where she clowns on the industry's climate at the time.
