Oh, I didn't expect to actually find a video using my guide! Especially given how over-complicated I made it for only a few steps, it's not very well written since I made it in a single sitting. I guess I'll just give a bit more context: - MultiMC doesn't work because it won't let you bypass Java requirements, even with Not so New installed, making it not work. - The whole Windows Vista thing in the replies was just a bit of a joke because of my username, there's nothing special about Vista for this, it's actually caused more more issues for me like freezing. I was actually gonna make this video idea but I guess you already beat me to it, but there's still 32-bit XP left! I'm not sure it'll actually work, due to RAM limitations, but if I can get around 2 GB allocated it should be okay. Nice video!
Thanks for providing more context! Your guide was pretty good I'm just a bit of an idiot, lol. This project was great fun, it just goes to show how ahead of its time Windows XP was, and how capable it can (still) be for a 23 year old operating system. I wish you luck on the 32-bit project, if there's anything I can do testing-wise to help the project along feel free to let me know!
@@TLGame I don't really need any testing help with it, I just need to get 32-bit XP installed in the first place since I only have 64-bit XP, then I'll go from there
Well I finally installed 32-bit XP, aannndd nothing. I can get a window to show briefly, but nothing else. It seems like another LWJGL issue, similar to 64-bit without file replacements. Odd thing is, the files ARE replaced. Not sure where to go from here yet.
@WindowsVista64x I suspected something like that would happen. Not sure if you know this, but in 21w14a (snapshot for 1.20.5), Minecraft cut official support for 32 bit operating systems, as a result 32 bit versions of Windows 10 even will be limited to 1.20.4 by default. I figured this may be just due to the java version change only having a 64 bit version, but perhaps there are other things stopping it from running on 32 bit architecture which is kind of a shame. In my personal tests of Windows XP 32 bit, I was only able to get 1.18.2 running with the not so new mod; this is because the lwjgl version doesn't need to be changed, as it uses the same version as 1.16.5 (3.2.2). Anything 1.19 and above I got the same errors as you from trying to change the name, and trying to alter the x86 file I just get a standard "Can't load AMD 64-bit.dll on a IA 32-bit platform" error which doesn't really help me. At the very least I was able to get past 1.16.5 on Windows XP 32 bit which may be enough for players to get a somewhat modern experience, but I'm not smart enough to get past that version lol. Interestingly enough, some people showed that MultiMC allows the user to switch the lwjgl version on the fly, but as you said it also lacks other functionality that makes it not usable for Windows XP. I suspect that if a launcher can be found that does both that and bypasses Java requirements (and is also usable on Windows XP) then it can be done, but I can't see something like that existing without it being purpose built for playing new Minecraft versions on legacy operating systems; if such a launcher existed, then we wouldn't be here talking about it. Anyway, thanks for giving it a shot anyway man, I dig your hard work and I'm glad someone is as interested in Windows XP/Vista as I am, lol.
@@TLGame I actually found a way to get beyond 1.18.2 on 32-bit XP, though not by much. If you swap out EVERY LWJGL 3.3.1 file used by 1.19.2 out for LWJGL 3.2.2 versions, it'll run fine-ish Anything past 1.19.2 isn't possible though because of some hard requirement on LWJGL, though since there's a mod for using older Java versions, I wonder if it'd be possible to make a mod for using older LWJGL versions? Might look into that as a possibility.
Awsome! I've had minecraft 1.12.2 playable on my pentium 4 machine with windows XP for a while, it runs at ~30fps with optifine. I tried 1.16 and above and it ran at about 3 fps...
Yeah about around minecraft 1.13 it became really hard to run. There's a pretty decent processor in my system for what it is, so I got about 60fps on a normal 1.21.4 world.
Yeah it's getting to be that way unfortunately. Minecraft used to be a passion project, now it's being treated as a number on a Microsoft exec's spreadsheet.
1.16.5 is the latest that officially runs on windows xp without modification. The OP of the original post said that MultiMC is missing a few features that allow the mod to work, but yeah it's definitely worth a shot.
Sounds like a fun time! I don't have access to a real XP era machine anymore, my family got rid of most of our old computer hardware, but if I ever do get access to one I'll give it a try.
That's good! I didn't really intend for it to be a tutorial, but if you want a more concise guide on how it works, this is what I read. hypixel.net/threads/how-to-get-newer-minecraft-versions-working-on-windows-xp-vista.5802390/

Pretty cool that you actually did that

I actually got this working too a month ago :)
Good work! It's fun seeing these old dogs do new tricks, as MattKC says.
funny timing for me, I'm currently installing windows xp on a computer I just built with a q9650 and titan x
We're reviving an old but gold OS with this one 🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥

Some PVP servers are still on versions before the combat update (1.9) so it may be more common than you think.

you could also try MultiMC on XP (it does work, but I only got up to 1.16.5 to work, also it's open source)

I used a hp pavilion p7-1234, which was released on market in May 2012 or about 2 years before XP extended support ended.
