"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Yeah defensive voting doesn’t work. Guys are going to a quantitatively worse candidate because of how horrific the incumbent is. May god help us.
I came here to say that very thing. Well said. Anyone interested in joining me, look into the DAFT visa. I'm no Hollywood jerkoff threatening to leave the country. I'm leaving in self-defense.

While supporting Trump can really only be explained by being someone who is disconnected from reality, the framing here that all black voters are expected not to think for themselves and just vote as a single block is pretty ridiculous.
What a stupid comment. Didn't even make it through it all. So dumb
I believe it is less that black support for Trump is going up, but more that the numbers look that way due to black voters rejecting Biden. I mea, if Trump retains the same actual number of black voters, but Biden loses actual numbers, it skews the percentage for Trump.
As a black man, on one hand I could never see myself voting for Trump or most republicans for president but on the other hand it’s been long overdue for the democrats to stop taking the black vote for granted. Black people have been giving blind loyalty to the democrats ever since the civil rights movement and have very little to show for it since then.
So then how can you claim it’s the republicans that are the ones that are bad?
I hear ya.. but one of the reasons they have "little to show for it" is because Republicans have blocked nearly every good black initiative the Dems put forward year after year.. It is the Republicans who have squeezed out the black vote, it was Republican Supreme Court who dismantled the voting rights act, it is Republicans who burned down affirmative action, it is Republicans who shut down black voting districts, its Republicans who tried to destroy the first black President. The Democratic party is black, a black speaker of the House, a former black President.. can you say the same about the Republican party? Blacks who vote for Republicans because they mad at Democrats for not doing more, are like the guy who teams up with the bank robber because the bank didn't do enough to stop thieves at the ATM.
Fuck this bullshit I’m voting for Trump and you should do the same… how the fuck do I benefit for voting for Democrats? Tell me that right now tell me seriously.

The reason Trump is gaining, percentage-wise, among black people is (1) because black people are staying home, or voting third party, in droves which typically means a lost vote for Biden. (2) Trump is appealing to black MEN through chauvinism/red pill/anti-feminism. The black male vote has had a much larger shift towards Trump than black women.

I’m still skeptical of these numbers. A lot of these “drops” for Biden among Hispanics and African Americans are taken from cross tabs in national polls. Since those two groups are small compared to the overall electorate, the small sample in the poll can swing the margin.
There was a poll recently of solely Hispanics and the margins were more traditional.
Even more so, the big “drops” are disproportionately among young voters, who are very hard to poll
Don't be skeptical, be proactive.

Yeah young people never vote and never will vote. It’s why no one listens to us. It’s why the politicians ignore our wishes. We sure do love to protest in the streets, but we never actually vote. Okay Kyle as an Arizonian it was not the retired suburban voter that made Arizona go blue. It was a combination of actual young locals and younger people who moved here for work from more liberal cities. The old retirees are what actually turned Arizona “red” back in the day, although I don’t think AZ has ever been as red as people tend to think.
True! But white over 65 voters really have shifter towards Biden recently. A lot of that is generational I'm sure as baby boomers have become dominant among seniors. But also there IS NO "suburban voter demographic", -not when the majority of ALL major US demographics and both Democrats and Republicans now live in the suburbs(!) and the biggest difference is how large that suburban majority is!

Who?
I did a little Wiki search to see all the electoral maps since FDR was President. It's pretty astounding how states have shifted since the mid-1900s. There were times when California and Texas were red and New York was blue. There were times when the bible belt was all blue. There were times when Iowa was consistently blue. Reagan basically turned everything red in his second term. American electoral politics are a crazy thing.
FDR did some good and also some bad like the confiscation of gold and basically martial law during ww2. For everything the people gain they also give something up. That’s how the world works. Dems hold up LBJ and FDR like they are gods because of the expansion of social safety net but it’s like they did these things so they could get away with the bad policies like Vietnam draft.
Racist Southern Democrats loved FDR’s programs… just as long as they could make sure it would not benefit black people.
