  • Another cover of a title track, this one from the album The One from 1992. The first album after Elton John went to rehab. The song was a top ten hit in the U.S. and has been played frequently during tours, however not with the band since the 1990's. Elton has decided to play it solo on the piano instead, and this cover focuses on these versions.

    It must be pure joy to play as well as you do. I would use the cliché that you have a gift, and while you do, I'm sure a lot of hard work goes into your performances. Keep up the great work!

    I saw you dancin' out the ocean
    Running fast along the sand
    A spirit born of earth and water
    Fire flying from your hands
    In the instant that you love someone
    In the second that the hammer hits
    Reality runs up your spine
    And the pieces finally fit
    And all I ever needed was the one
    Like freedom fields where wild horses run
    When stars collide like you and I
    No shadows block the sun
    You're all I've ever needed
    Babe, you're the one
    There are caravans we follow
    Drunken nights in dark hotels
    When chances breathe between the silence
    When sex and love no longer gel
    For each man in his time is Cain
    Until he walks along the beach
    And sees his future in the water
    A long lost heart within his reach
    And all I ever needed was the one
    Like freedom fields where wild horses run
    When stars collide like you and I
    No shadows block the sun
    You're all I've ever needed
    Ooh babe, you're the one
    [Instrumental]
    And all I ever needed was the one

    Super, I love your interpretations.
    For those not certain how it’s done, it is important to “know your chords”, Major/minor, relative Major/relative minor etc.......and you can play like Elton. Basically these are what’s known as “Chord merchants” in the business, as opposed to complex melodies and counterpoint as heard in classical music. Chord structures all lead on to other variations and EJ plays on these greatly. (If I had done this at Music College I would have been thrown out!). It is very simple and all the “twiddly bits” are simply arpeggios of the chord. Get yourselves a chord structure book. Play a few and you’ll see how Elton’s melodies are constructed. The true “musicians” in his music are the arrangers, writers, producers.....Gus Dugeon, Paul Buckmaster, et al. They are the musicians in the equation. Elton’s the chord player. Good Luck.

    • @LimeCovers
      @LimeCovers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is very true. Without all the great musicians Elton had around him, the songs wouldn't be so special as they turned out to become.

    • @BassManDan1018
      @BassManDan1018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By that logic, John Lennon and Bob Dylan weren’t true musicians either. 90% of pop music is melody accompanied by chord progressions. It’s a different type of composition to western classical music. Doesn’t make the writer any less of a ‘musician’, as you put it. A pop audience doesn’t want counterpoint or complex harmony. Elton was writing hits, not fugues. Stupid comment.

    • @rmlectronicsuk2410
      @rmlectronicsuk2410 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BassManDan1018 Hmmm. You are correct in so much as John Lennon & Bob Dylan weren’t “musicians” either. It matters not what kind of music is “written” in Pop (ie putting the dots on the manuscript paper) as this is done in the main by transcribers who interpret what the player is playing.
      The musicians are the arrangers, the George Martin, Carl Davies, Paul Buckmaster, of this world; they are the musicians, the performers are just that. Performers.

    • @BassManDan1018
      @BassManDan1018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rmlectronicsuk2410To relegate writers such as Lennon, Dylan and Elton John to just ‘performers’ is pretty ignorant. With regards to Buckmaster and Martin, they composed arrangements for songs written by the artist. In Buckmasters case, mostly just the occasional pretty pentatonic figure to fill in the gaps. Still beautiful work. But Elton WRITES the songs with Bernie. He composes the melody from which harmony is derived, the ostinatos that inspire the charts (watch the interview with Del Newman on the making of Goodbye yellow brick road), the rhythms, and the chordal accompaniment. You realise that without John Lennon, ‘in my life’ wouldn’t have existed for George Martin to play piano on? They don’t do their own transcriptions, no, but to have that as your definition of a true musician is pretty archaic.
