What do you think of Voodoo? The night ofAugust 14, 17912, Dutty Boukman organizes a political and religious ceremony for a large number of slaves. The Mambo priestess , Cécile Fatiman , proceeds to sacrifice a black pig, and the assistants drink his blood in order to become invulnerable. Boukman then orders the general uprising by bringing together the different African tribes in their quest for freedom, voodoo was a catalyst in the revolt of the slaves of Saint-Domingue. The Bois-Caïman revolt began with a meeting of runaway slaves on the night ofAugust 14, 1791, considered in Haiti as the founding act of the revolution and the war of independence . It is the first great collective uprising in Haiti against slavery

0:55 As a Haitian, I would like to clarify that Haiti was not the first independent Black nation, but rather the first Black republic. There were numerous ancient African civilizations and kingdoms that existed long before Haiti's independence, such as Ta-Seti, Kemet, Nubia, Punt, Aksum, Kongo, the Malian Empire, the Songhai Empire, Ghana Empire, Dahomey, and many others. While Haiti's accomplishment was significant, it is important to provide an accurate historical account and recognize the rich history of Black civilizations that predate slavery and encompass kingdoms, thrones, and the origins of humanity.
What are you saying? Haiti is the first black independent nation. African countries start getting their independence in the mid 1900 it’s a brand new continent. First African country to get independence from colonial power is Ghana 🇬🇭 and they are very proud of it

Well, African Tigress, it’s nice to see you back in Haiti again. But I will tell you, you did not assist, according to what I see on the clip here, you did not partake in the real vaudou ceremony. Vaudou ceremonies are done in secrecy by people in the inner circle. It’s precious, therefore cannot be exposed to the public like that. They will not let TH-camrs or any common people into a vaudou ceremony, no. What I see here in that video clip is nothing else but a gathering of believers and spectators together - people who just want to commemorate the actual liberating vaudou ceremony at the Bois-Cayman. Those people are provided with the space, the concert, the ambiance to celebrate that victory of the slaves at that time. That gathering iIS NOT a Vaudou ceremony, but just a party atmosphere for joyful Africans/Africans celebrating their victory. Also, I’ll say that your tour guide didn’t give you the best bang for your bucks. What was presented here is bits and pieces of a whole that is more significant and wholesome than what was said. The language barrier (extremely limited and unclear English) also played a part in the blockage of better understanding of the presentation. Vaudou is a big deal; it’s a great deal. It’s not as vague as what I heard here. It is solid. It is meaningful. It is wholesome, Your tour guide’s knowledge and presentation is less than elementary, it’s like knowledge of word-of-mouth from the streets. It’s sounds like something that people heard over and over again and then they get to know it. Therefore it’s not empirical knowledge that you were presented with. Yeah that’s what I heard and saw from the video. But, it is appreciated that you’ve tried to cover such an important holy day event in Haiti👏🏼🇭🇹❤️

Thank you for sharing. The video was interesting, but I felt it lacked important context. It didn’t seem like an actual Vodou ceremony, which I think you wouldn't have been permitted to film due to its sacred nature. Instead, the event felt more like a celebration, remembrance, or reenactment paying homage to what took place on August 14/21/22 - 1791. Given the widespread negative narratives about Vodou and Haiti, this video unfortunately didn’t help to challenge those misconceptions; instead, it may have reinforced them. Without proper context, viewers are left to their own interpretations and assumptions, missing out on the true depth and significance of this cultural practice and historical moment. Having a guide or interpreter well-versed in the practice and culture would have added valuable insight and clarity to such an important cultural significance.

Vodou originated in the ancient kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Nigeria, Benin, and Togo) and derives from the Fon word for "God" or "Spirit." Other accurate spellings include Vodun, Vodoun, but never voodoo, the sensationalist and derogatory Western creation.

This was more of a ceremony than a practice
Why keep it a secret? Something wrong with it?😂

@@charleeharris2976 sorry about that. Personally I had no idea how beautiful haiti is until I saw this video. I'm very tempted to go there
This was very beautiful, a wonderful ceremony. I'm disappointed by the fact that I'm seeing a French flag instead of a Haitian one. Maybe french people paid them? 🤷🏿♂️
Not French. The French flag arranges the color blue, white, and red horizontally.
@@princegcash2915 Ah I wasn't aware of this. I apologize and appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Do you happen to know what this flag represents?
@@S1804TEvery spirit has their favorite color, the flags often represent the colors of the Main spirits that rule in the vodou temple. If it's the spirit called Dantor they will have the colors Red and Black, because that's the colors the spirit Dantor love. (It doesn't mean that's the only spirit that's in the temple, it means that's the Main spirit, like the patron). If that makes sense
@@Flower_005 I really appreciate your knowledgeable reply and the relief that it has brought to me! I hope one day to become less ignorant, more fluent, and more active as I seek to deepen my understanding of Haitian vodou.🙏🏿

I'm here to help!😊 I appreciate your kindness, and humbleness, that'll take you far in life. you will learn indeed 💯 I don't practice voodoo, but my father does, and many of my uncles/ and aunts, older cousins are vodou priest/priestess, there's a voodoo temple in my lakou (yard), I watch the vodou ceremonies and learn, I respect my culture even though I'm don't partake in it. I wish Port-au-Prince was safe so you could travel, people in my family who practice vodou would love to teach you.
Every country in the Caribbean and some outside the Caribbean do voodoo. Why would you focus on Haitian voodoo and not the other countries? They do it also . Now when an oppressed people rise up to fight for their rights and freedoms it is beautiful. Fighting against oppression has nothing to do with voodoo. Next time you are in Kenya you show Kenyan voodoo too. Haiti is not all about voodoo. We are about freedom!!!!!
In Cuba it isn't Voodoo. People call it Ifa, Yoruba, or Lucumi.
It was an event that commemorated the beginning of the end of chattel slavery in the Americas. A celebration of the actual anniversary date of the ceremony that started the Haytian Revolution at Bwa Kayiman. August 14th, 1791 at midnight.

@@charliel4103it was an uprising for freedom nothing to do with voodoo. If voodoo was so effective, why didn’t it work for other Caribbean countries in their fight for freedom and why didn’t it work in Africa for their freedom against colonizers since it’s origins are from Africa?
