I was thinking you were going to put each of them in 1 block deep Obsidian cup, for the each of them to stand in, on opposite sides of an underground room. Then build Obsidian tubes above the Obsidian cups, and set it up, so that a red stone & piston circuit, releases lava into both tubes, and he only has enough time to save one of them.
Outside the underground room, have a sign that reads "Choose".
At the 90° turn, of the tunnel leading to the room, put a diamond pickax in a wall frame, under a sign that reads "You will need one of these."
And a sign before that, that reads, "they're this way."
And a sign before that, that reads, "If you want to reach your 2 ladies"
You could have also set up 1 or more sets of glass tubes & cups, next to or around the obsidian tubes & cups, and have lava go down all tubes, at the same time, so he knows how much time he has, to dig one of them out of their cup and push them out of the way, or however he interferes with one of their murders.
And incase he's too late getting to them, put their names on the cups.....
