This was a thrill (despite my nerves)! Apologies for the all the stuttering. You'd never know I used to make my living on the Tee Vee. But my life doesn't have a script ;'P
Great interview! Always wanted to hear you talk shop! If you don't mind me asking, which brush are you using, you mentioned it has a cartridge? I'd love to know more about it!
@@slowhedI remember reading years ago that Allred reached out to Charles Burns early in his career, who recommended using a #0 brush for inking. Update: Oh, he goes into it in this very interview. 😄
I grew up in Eugene, where Mr. Allred currently resides, and had the good fortune to meet him several times as we both had a subscription box at the same comic shop. If you bought one of his books and had the shop owner put it in his box for you, he would sign your stuff whenever he came in. He would pop into the shop every Wednesday and always took the time to talk with anyone who approached him, no matter how busy his schedule was. Mike Allred is one of the kindest, most giving people I've ever met.
Mike is the Paul Newman of comics. At the very top of his game. Successful. Champion of the medium. Family man. Hard worker. Supporter of younger artists who look up to him. Oh…and on the side …he’s also a rockstar. Absolute LEGEND.
I've been a Mike Allred fan for 30 some years and somehow never heard him talk, never had an impression of his demeanor and personality outside of what comes across in a magazine interview. I'm so happy he is such a cool, humble guy. Also, back when I first got email back in 1994, somehow I got Mike Allred's email address and he graciously responded to my message asking about his drawing tools where he also turned me on to Windsor & Newton series 7 #2 brushes.
Mike Allred is and has been in my top 5 since picking up Madman Adventures #1 as a kid. And he's always been nothing but kind and supportive when he's passed my booth at cons over the years even though I doubt he knows me from Adam. A+ dude.
Allred is in my top 3 of all time. That art style is so iconic. Laura's colors really make it shine though. A dynamic duo of epic proportions. We're all lucky to have them.
Another great interview. Pop culture alert - A shelf of light sabres, a Han Solo DL-44, and a TOS Phaser,, The Saint ring tone... I'm guessing 'Bolan' is the upcoming project
The brush pen Mike is referring to at 12:18 is the Pentel Pigment Ink Brush Pen - Extra Fine (FP5F). With the Pentel brush pens, the grey handled pens are pigment inks which are waterproof while the black handles are aqueous.
This was so great! I could listen to Mike talk about The Prisoner all day. Laura’s offscreen comments (“teacher’s pet!”) just made me want a dual interview even more. Maybe a deep dive into Grafik Muzik when the Madman Library Vol. 6 comes out…
Loved this interview. I've got Mike's stuff tattoo'd on my body and just watching this confirms he just has such an inviting personality and could be friends with anybody.
Reading Oddity Odyssey got me back into reading and drawing comics in 1995 after a few years of having no money as a student. Mike and Laura Allred are one of the best teams in comics and this was a truly inspiring interview. Thank you!
What a great interview and creator. I loved Mike Allred before it’s increased 10 fold now that I’ve seen this interview. Love his passion when he talked about his stories.
damn I love shoot interviews. I think I have said this before but the one thing in common I see with all these artists is that they all seem composed and at least on some level got their shit together, there is definitely something they all seem to have in common. there are a couple exceptions of course lol, but i think it just shows what it takes to have the dedication to make all the shit they have made.
Man oh man, this was so awesome. So stellar fellas, thanks. I too would like hear/see a shoot with Laura, I'd like to hear/see her process techniques for coloring. Once again so cool.🙂🤟
Made my day!👍Madman 3 issue mini series came out around the same time my father was sick and passed away and that quirky fun read got me through it! The corner of the book has a little Madman dancing and clever as hell flip book! Been there over the years, The Atomics,Catwoman mini series with Darwyn Cooke,Superman/Madman Hoolabaloo , Solo (Hourman with a Chris Ware homage and the New Gods short!🎯) and of course 29 issues of Silver Surfer ❤️! Ed is correct Laura Allred is a excellent color artist! Great combo! Hopefully they will both come back sooner than later 🤞! Keep reading and making comix!😎
Terry Moore also worked in TV as an editor. He quit after Strangers in Paradise was taking off and his tv job was getting in the way of dealing with Dimond.
I met Mike and Laura at Armageddon pop culture expo in Christchurch, New Zealand some years ago and was asking him about his inking. He showed me his brush pen....it was a Pentel pocket brush and I was inspired to get one soon after.
A couple years back I kept hearing the rumor that Mike Allred was closely related to a certain famous feminist lawyer. It took me a while to research that situation, but I believe I finally debunked it. However, feel free to add anything that may change my conclusion. Meanwhile it's so great that the dynamic CK duo are interviewing easily one of my Top 10 favorite living comics artists. Thanks guys and Mike!
Allred is amazing! Definitely check out his variant cover to Action Comics 1050 where he homages all the artists he mentions here as influences and contemporaries.
Love these interviews. You can just feel the excitement and energy from everyone and it’s a joy to watch and listen too. That bws story was my favorite.
Ha, I use the Japanese waterbrush too. I use the Pentel Fude brush. They come in different sizes too. I could neve get the Raphael or Windsor Newton's to work. I think I always get one that splits like Mike said, and they were too expensive to keep buying and trying.

Been waiting years for this!!!
It was so great to get to hear you speak about this stuff. I hope you’ll do more❤❤❤
Dude you seem fucking chill

That's incredibly flattering. HUGE admirer of the Pauls (Newman & McCartney), who are fine inspiring examples of life well lived.
It’s life reaffirming when one of your fav artists seems like such a good dude. Thanks for doing this one. A real pleasure.
Perfect person to interview. Ask one question and you get all these other questions answered at the same time.
I was thinking the same thing!
I've been a Mike Allred fan for 30 some years and somehow never heard him talk, never had an impression of his demeanor and personality outside of what comes across in a magazine interview. This interview was so great! More Allred anytime!
This interview made me finally order the first Madman Library Edition. I love his artwork so much that I couldn't put it off anymore.
I cracked open my unread copy tonight because of this interview.
Mike Allred is and has been in my top 5 since picking up Madman Adventures #1 as a kid. And he's always been nothing but kind and supportive when he's passed my booth at cons over the years even though I doubt he knows me from Adam. A+ dude.
Wow, Mike has aged like a fine wine. Great interview, boys.
LOVE THIS INTERVIEW
Mike is correct, Peter Milligan is one of the most underrated writers in comics.
Allred is one of comic heroes. This interview made me emotional, and I have even more respect forthe man. Also, I need that Prisoner shirt!
I don't know why it to me so long to realize! What a cool guy. He should do a Prisoner book!
Allred is in my top 3 of all time. That art style is so iconic. Laura's colors really make it shine though. A dynamic duo of epic proportions. We're all lucky to have them.
I loved the prisoner. I had no idea that you could visit the island. Awesome.
Another great interview. Pop culture alert - A shelf of light sabres, a Han Solo DL-44, and a TOS Phaser,, The Saint ring tone... I'm guessing 'Bolan' is the upcoming project
YESSSS!!! This has been my most wanted shoot interview!
I really hope Jess/Omnidog gets to have a chat with Mr Allred......fingers crossed, Mike was in a couple of his live chats 🙂
SOLID interview! Very enjoyable, guys. I met Mike years ago. He and his wife were so damn nice. Truly an exception to meeting one's heroes.
As a Mike Allred fan from day one, this is a wish fulfilled, grateful appreciation for this.
Hell Yeah! love Mike Allred's style. Cop any Madman when I see it. Need to start his Silver Surfer
This was amazing! This shoot interview will be up there with Seth and Sergio on the Mt. Rushmore. Thank you guys
Yes, yes, couldn’t agree more. The Sergio and Seth shoots were another level. I think it’s because Sergio and Seth are characters.
allred has been an art hero for most of my life!
Love, love, love Allred's art...Silver Surfer and Superman especially...thank you for getting him in for a shoot!
The brush pen Mike is referring to at 12:18 is the Pentel Pigment Ink Brush Pen - Extra Fine (FP5F). With the Pentel brush pens, the grey handled pens are pigment inks which are waterproof while the black handles are aqueous.
Thank you so much for this info!
That was a sick Prisoner figure, and the Bowie was next level. Great interview!
Thanks for the interview guys! Allred is a legend. What a fantastic opener for 2024.
Amazing. Mike has been my comics hero since pretty much the beginning.
Reading Oddity Odyssey got me back into reading and drawing comics in 1995 after a few years of having no money as a student. Mike and Laura Allred are one of the best teams in comics and this was a truly inspiring interview. Thank you!
Such an amazing interview! Mike Allred is a legend! Oh, and David Harbour could totally play him in a biopic.
What a truly delightful human being! Loved his work for a long time, and it's great that he's just as much fun to listen to
What a great fun interview. Allred is such a great talent. Hope he comes back to the channel soon.
What a great interview and creator. I loved Mike Allred before it’s increased 10 fold now that I’ve seen this interview. Love his passion when he talked about his stories.
If Solo came back, it would get me to buy a DC book again. Hell, I’d expand it into a Shonen Jump thick type publication.

Thanks for doing this guys, I'm a long time fan of Mike Allred!

That James Gunn flick is called The Specials. It is a fun low budget flick.
This is the interview I’ve been waiting for. Allred is my all-time favorite cartoonist. Did not disappoint! Thanks guys. I can die happy now.
So fucking awesome. Hope to see more ALLRED on Kayfabe!
AWESOME interview, guys! I've never been a huge Allred fan but this made me really appreciate him. Seems like the coolest dude.
Terry Moore also worked in TV as an editor. He quit after Strangers in Paradise was taking off and his tv job was getting in the way of dealing with Dimond.
Far cry from a talking head though, which was our point.
I met Mike and Laura at Armageddon pop culture expo in Christchurch, New Zealand some years ago and was asking him about his inking. He showed me his brush pen....it was a Pentel pocket brush and I was inspired to get one soon after.
One of my favorite artists ever. Listening to this now! Thanks for making this, guys!
Been waiting for this interview to happen! His work on X-force has been one of my favorites ever. Pick up anything he or laura are involved in since
Finally! Always knew Mike would show up on here
Brilliant interview. And that prisoner shirt is very cool
Back in the 90s, I showed Mike Allred my comic pages at Wondercon in Oakland, and he gave me the same advice. ink with brushes.
Class conversation as always guys, thank you.

Reading all the nice things folks here have to say about my dad makes me tear up just a lil 😅
MY ELDEST! Love ya Son!@@Hanallred

Maybe he is talking about pentel pocket brush pen?

Can you make this an annual event?
The best! ❤
Love Mike!
I'm curious about the Bridges(?) Art of Motion thing Ed mentions around 1:02:55...anyone know what he's talking about?
