Hi Gerry...Thats a neat setup for your paraglider. Working with scrap is always a challenge, with getting it clean enough to weld and making due with the pieces you've got on hand. But, for me, theres always something gratifying about making something useful out of a free pile of scrap. I'm a sucker for free weldable scrap metal. It's great for tinkering around in the shop. I read the comments below about your brothers music. I might be interested in using some of it in portions of my videos to spice things up a bit.
Hi Marcel. It's not a thing of beauty but its fun value is enormous. There is a danger element to it as well where one of the welds or bolts to fail there would be propeller and me all over the place. I like to focus on the fun part of the equation though Lol. If I can manage to get this thingie 20 feet in the air for a few minutes that would be cool but I am hoping it goes well and I can get a lot higher and further than that. Feel free to use any of the Trance Jedi music he gets a kick out of it. Cheers Gerry
Yeah, I was thinking about all that brains stuck in the propeller mess... I guess that's just the price you gotta pay for a little fun...lmao I'll be sure to give Trance Jedi credit in the description when I do use it.
Hi Steve. The music is my brothers and he is happy with anyone using it. Here's a link to his channel. th-cam.com/channels/GzTGm2iAW2SW1FM2E4GMHA.html Cheers Gerry
Hi Steve. I have a little more welding and cutting to do on the trike. I fly from that field all the time but this will be the first time for me ever on a trike. Here's a link to one of the videos. th-cam.com/video/SlstVcOdH_0/w-d-xo.html Cheers Gerry
Hi Eugene. I flew it this evening, just a short flight but take off and landing were lovely. Having your feet on the steering bars is like having your feet on the stirrup of a paragliding harness. I took some video and I am uploading it now. Cheers Gerry
Congratulations your cart was great, I'm doing one like yours, but a little wider to have more stability, thank you and receive a strong hug directly from the north coast city Caraguatatuba Sao Paulo Brazil.
Hi. If all goes well with the mods it will be finished tomorrow and when we get some nice evening or morning weather I will connect a wing and fly it. Cheers Gerry
Very nice Gerry If you're going to the beach, be careful to stay on the wet sand. Dry sand hitting the prop could eat away at the leading edge. Maybe put some prop tape on the propeller leading edge. (Then you'd have to rebalance the prop of course) Your feet looked quite close together on the steering bar. Do you have end stops on the feet bar to stop your feet bouncing off if you are on rough ground going fast? (I couldn't see). May be worth considering. You'll rarely be landing at 20mph unless in still wind or downwind landing I guess, but it's possible if you have an engine cut out at low altitude etc. Great video, and i'm sure it'll work just grand!
Hi Gerry, having built an Ozirt/Calor oil burner a la Gerry and got into huge trouble with she who must be obeyed, for nicking her best stainless stock pot, you have now rekindled my interest in paramotoring. I've always flown microlights before but really fancy having a go now. What make is yours? Any tips? There is a complete lack of unbiased advice /info on TH-cam. Perhaps you could do something to help?? Keep it up Gerry, you're a man after my own heart! Richard(Devon)
Hi Richard. My waste oil thing happened because my shed was cold ( not anymore ) lol. I have ploughed through quite a few pots and pans on my journey but the burner of choice for me now is simple and mostly mild steel. I am making a variation on that theme today so more on that soon. I have lots of hours and quite a few videos on a different channel flying paragliders so when I wanted to try flying with an engine it was not a hard transition and I basically taught myself. Here's a link to my first paramotor flight th-cam.com/video/mblVWPK3kjg/w-d-xo.html Not a great start but I figured out a lot after that. It's a dangerous sport and super training is just hype. Good training is easily found and a lot of the paramotors were built with the moster 185 engine and the cages and manufacturers are very similar. Wings can make the most difference in therms of safety and speed. Have a go on a tandem paraglider or paramotor and see if its for you. I still have to fix my engine before I can get the paramotor back in the air. Thanks for the comment Richard Cheers Gerry
any issues so far with the front wheel being wobbly when taking off and landing ? usually the front wheel is angled backward (like a shopping cart) thx for sharing, nice vid !
Hi LadyBoy69 It is better on take off if I have both feet on the wheel. The first time I took off I didn't know what to expect and it wanted to turn left. You can see in the video I got my left foot on the wheel really quickly to recover the steering. Once the wing came overhead and it started to move forward things were better. I will be making a the shopping cart wheel mod soon. The engine needs a rebuild but I have a big todo list at the moment so it will be a few weeks before I start that project,. Thanks for the comment. Cheers Gerry
You should replace those hard wheel chair wheels with some really nice balloon wheels. ?That would take alot of the hardness when landing out of the equation. Thx for the video.
Hi Skyym3 The wheels are certainly a weak point in the design. I think I will make a stainless steel trike over the winter and not make my next Ppg Trike from scrap. It was a fun little project and Flew well. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry
It doesn't need to be said again..but you are an absolute legend of an Irishman. Better than the one's we have over here in Oz.!! Didn't the English throw their 'shyte' out here as well? Yeah we have ALL the 'leftovers'. Obviously the really worthwhile people are still in Ireland..."the land of the wet and freezing cold... from sea to shining sea!" LMFAO.
Gerry how do you pull his music off youtube to use it I ask him if it was ok and he said yes but I don't know how you did it i,m still new to all of this thank you
Hi Thomas. It's about as stable as an old Robin Reliant 3 wheel car ( not very ) but if it were a quad I think you could get to 100 mph with no difficulty. On the trike I only need 12 ish mph to take off but I was easily doing 20 yesterday on rough terrain with the throttle mostly closed and not continuous. It's a bit like the enterprise just before the shields finally go. Lots of shaking side to side and I was thinking she cannie take it Jim Lol. A little later today I am going to cut and weld a bit more on that trike to change the angle of the prop and cage and redo the arm supports. Then it will require more bouncing in the field. There's a beach near me that's about 20km long so I might bring it there. Cheers Gerry
Hi Thomas. Find the music you want to download on youtube and copy the link. Go here www.flvto.biz and paste your link select mp3 and download. That's it and if your music is creative commons all you have to do is give credit in the description to the artist. There is lots free music on youtube. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry
Hi Jerry. I could fly it as it is but I am going to make a few improvements today. I will be watching the weather and the maiden flight will be soon. Cheers Gerry
Hi Jerry. I bought the propeller for about 120 euro delivered to Ireland. www.dtpropellers.com They are in Latvia. I have bought a couple of their propellers now and will buy more as I need them. Cheers Gerry
In his videos about the fly-pod trike, sold through flight junkies, Mr. Fister talks extensively about his castering nose wheel... Although I think I have decided a trike just isn't for me, I sorta bought into his discussion on the forces involved. Just thought I'd mention it, as your design looks like inherently unstable especially at higher speeds. I'd be concerned that wheel loads could easily overpower your legs ability to correct, especially in side load situations, thereby exposing you to some roll over potential. Nonetheless, I love innovation, thanks for posting this project along the way of it's construction and development. FWIW almost all homebuilt aircraft now utilize castering nose wheel systems, they're just a better way to handle speed combined with the chance of the loads imposed ...
Hi YankeeinSC1. I did look at captain Kurt's videos and it is a good trike. Castering works well in a few designs from gyrocopters through to shopping carts. The Blackhawk trike self centers and is not castered. It's a bit like taking your hands off the handlebars of a bike it still goes straight . I tried feet off last night when I had it in the field and my trike goes straight too. I moved a support bar under the seat and I think I could foot land this now if I wanted or had to(maybe). Into wind the landing speed can be very low with a well timed flare maybe 5 mph or even less. I am looking at the weather this week so when I get a good morning or evening I will inflate the wing and if it feels good I will bring it up. Hopefully all goes well, I'm getting too old for hospitals Lol. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. Cheers Gerry
The Blackhawk tracks straight, but a caster wheel will go with the wing. When the wing goes off to the side it will pull the cart with it, Blackhawk wheel will turn the opposite direction instead of castering the direction of the wing. Caster will self steer. gd lk m8
Hi Monkeyrock77. Widening the wheels would make it alot more stable on the ground alright but in the air would make it harder to control. It's a compromise alright but it could do with some brakes too. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry
Hi Fred. Great minds think alike... I had just written a reply below to Thomas and your comment came in. There is a really lovely long beach near me that I fly with my paraglider but it would be great for the trike without a wing. Here's a link to a flight I did there a few years ago. th-cam.com/video/6WXpj1_ZP88/w-d-xo.html Cheers Gerry

Hi Marcel. At lest the trike is part medical device. Cheers Gerry
Gerry that's well done ! very inspirational
Thanks Michael. You could have a lot of craic in Oz Mad Max style with a version of this even if it never flew. Lol Cheers Gerry
Love the build man. You have much more nerve than I to fly. Good luck sir!
Oh - what's the name of the music you used?

Interesting build. Any updates since then? I need a trike myself but I can't see paying the crazy price Nirvana wants for theirs.
Good man Gerry she's looking good and sturdy. Your as handy as a small pot lol. Safe flying.

Cant wait to see the finished product
Hi. If all goes well with the mods it will be finished tomorrow and when we get some nice evening or morning weather I will connect a wing and fly it. Cheers Gerry
Fanntastic. Can wait to see it in the air. You are a gifted man Gerry.
Hi Mr Tidy. I am going to give it a run minus the wing on the beach soon. Cheers Gerry
Very nice Gerry

"See what falls off and fix it" Hopefully not you! :-) Kind of paranoid of a trike without roll bar...
Only the Irish could do this.
