- Ep6 of our 'rifle ranking' series, we take a look at the FX DRS to see if it lives upto it's hype, and also see if it's any good in sub12.
I got a DRS 700 .22 and absolutely love it. Upgraded to the slug power kit, Huma tuning spring and Carbon fiber sleeve. Now I’m shooting 34 grain slugs at 110 bar on the regulator 940 fps… very accurately
+1 sub ! Yeah i agree, i also haven't seen any evidence of accuracy problems when the pressure drops. It also doesn't make any sense that it would.

It does look like one of my mini mags (JCE3D). The first batch have no distinct marking as they were prototypes that worked first time and people wanted them quite quickly. Later production runs will have "JCE" on the left hand side of the magazine. 17 rounds in 177 and 15 in 22 cal for the mini mag. I also make a micro mag that fits under the FX Picatinny rail which holds 15 in 177 and 13 in 22.

Try a Rowan engineering single shot tray ....great design and very well made......bet you get more accuracy with it.
Nahhh, that takes away from what the gun was bought for.
It's made to be a mag fed, lightweight hunting gun.
I found your review while searching on this rifle ,I enjoyed it especially the different distances where others would do the standard 30 or 40 meter target shoot . I like your honest view and detail of the gun an will watch your next ep.

Hello mate, I've never been an FX guy in sub 12 guns, as ive alwauys seen them as 100ftlb guns restricted down to syut our market, which hasnt worked as well as it should....but this one is a great little gun which has really surprised us and surpassed expectations, especially for such little money!

Hi, I agree 100% if you require tune ability in fac to unleash its true potential, I’d not hesitate having one. Unfortunately in sub 12 is like buying an V12 limited to 500 rpm and 71 mph unfortunately. Admittedly a V12 at 500 rpm sounds awesome 😊👍 thanks for your reply kindest regards Carl
When I got mine I cleaned the barrel with in an inch of its life. It made a great real difference.

The standard magazine on my DRS fell apart after the second time I filled it. 5 weeks later it was finally replaced by this time I'd used an Eagle Vision magazine & the replacement is still in the bag. Otherwise cracking gun. Really enjoying your videos.

Ing using it around a year now out of every gun I've had this is my favourite I traded my HW100 for it and not regretted it yet. I have no issues with accuracy no matter what the fill. I use QYS in .177 and agree still can't get over the price. But yea only hate is the mag

I picked up a .22/600mm DRS (FAC) as a lightweight squirrel stalking rifle.
Relative to my heavier PCPs, the light weight of the DRS is at a disadvantage when bench shooting, but it sure is a pleasure to carry for a long day out in the field.
Think that FX sets the trigger weight low on purpose. A heavy trigger on a heavy airgun is ok but could disturb the aim on a rifle as light as the DRS. I like the trigger as received and only took a few shots to get used to it.
The magazine is what it is. It's tight to insert (a light smear of silicon grease helps), but I figure that the o-rings will wear/compress after some use, and that will ease up. Better a bit tight than too loose.
My DRS shoots a variety of 18 grain pellets well and accuracy has been excellent. The power plant is very consistent and I'm getting around 33 shots at 30ish FPE on a fill. The shot count is on par or slightly better than my other PCPs with similar volume/pressure air reservoirs.
All in all, the DRS is ideal for its intended purpose as a lightweight stalking rifle and as a bonus it gives a good account of itself on the bench.
Think it's good value for the money!

@Dave_18126 well that I will love to do, I need to recruit all of these "accurate at 60 yards" springer guys to come over to show us how it's done...... I've yet to see one keep up with a pcp.
@@Airgunmarksmanofficial would be very interesting to see. Especially in real world shooting conditions. I personally would back the pcp when shooting groups due to changing position when loading the springer plus the wind speed constantly changing. One shot targets would be a close call. But shooting groups, pcp wins hands down for me.
You can get a picatinny adapter, medium and low profile with a 20 MOA angle from FX £60 ish, i have one fitted to mine and it gives better scope adjustment, good video new sub, thumbs up..

I picked up a shop soiled one from Solware in .22 and really enjoy it, but I have found it gets a very dirty beetle very quickly. I’ve ended up running a pull through down the barrel about every 5 mags and then it’s like a laser!

Great video, thank-you. An interesting gun - and you are not the first reviewer to criticise the fit of the standard FX mag.
I use a Veyron 6-24 x 44 FFP on my TX200. The distance between the eyepiece and the turrets is very short and I struggled to get the scope positioned for correct eye relief. With a standard ring (like the ones supplied) the rear mount was nearly an inch and a half off the back of the dovetail. Even the most cranked mounts from BKL didn't cut it but the offering from Hawke does the trick. Great scope but would recommend taking your rifle with you to your dealer when buying one. I was fanny-ing around for a couple of weeks to get the mounting right. If you are on a budget (OAP here) its very hard to beat Vector Optics at the price.

I've shot for years with all kinds of glass.
And I've finally settled with vector optics....
This is mainly because I like to use my turrets and 'click' to my different ranges.
And vector optics are the only company supplying Japanese glass with etched reticles and reliable turrets for dialling.
The veyron is a good little scope for airguns, but some guns will need to use a cantilever mount with them.
I also love vortex scopes, but I don't want to use a scope that costs the same as my gun! Haha
When it comes to hawke, if you are spending 'veyron ffp money' then you run the risk of getting a shit hawke.
To get a hawke of the same 'calibre' as a vector veyron ffp, you need to spend much more than veyron money.

Totally agree. I recently splashed out on a Hawke Sidewinder (not even FFP) and it was over twice the cost of a comparable Vector Optics scope.
I'm building a 25m bench-rest gun and the Sentinel 10-40x50 is totally unmatched until you are spending 3-4 times the cash.
I have a drs and the mag on mine has been a perfect fit from the start though a lot say they are tight ( i must have had a lucky one 😅) . The barrel is inside of a sleeve so as far as I can make out, it's not directly affected by the pressure.

Got one in grade 2 walnut last week, immediately impressed so far. The mag has improved but still garbage, shame really, ordered two from JCE3D!

Surprised by that! Quiet a few negative to mixed reviews of the DRS online.
Yeah, this particular gun shot pretty well, and isn't expensive..... I wasn't sure whether to put it in this category, as its half the price of all other guns on the list.

Just curious why your scope is so far back that your cheek is behind the rest.
@Skilpadjie1 the scope rail on the drs is broken up by the mag poking through it, making perfect scope placement an issue.
I didn't have cantilever mounts to hand to situate the scope in its ideal position.
But, I could hold the rifle fine, and my shots weren't compromised, so I made do, rather than ordering new mounts, just to test the gun.

This one certainly does seem to be pretty good value for the money. I can't see why the cylinder pressure would affect the POI as it will be consistent across the length of the barrel, albeit in dropping with every shot. No excuses for the magazine though, that pretty poor from FX.
Some people have raised concerns that having 200 odd bar squeezing your barrel will affect the barrels' harmonics and movement characteristics differently to when it's ran down to less pressure, like 100bar....
@@Airgunmarksmanofficial While I agree that everything must make some difference, I'm not too sure that this would be significant. I have watched a strip-down video and studied the exploded diagram on the FX web site. The barrel proper sits inside a shroud and the air tank sits around that shroud, so no pressure is actually applied to the barrel. With the O-ring seals involved, I would imagine there is a level of isolation between the tank and the barrel.
The only way to prove or disprove this issue is to do some groups with the tank full and repeat with the tank (say) 20 bar short of ready for a refill.
The poi doesn't change with pressure difference and the magazine on my DRS is as sweet as a nut to put in , my only gripe is that the mag is flipping fiddly to load but I've overcome that by making a simple loading cradle 😊

Funnily enough, with running the range I have met a lot of springer shooters that claim to be as good as you, and all of them fall at the first hurdle against a cheap pcp.
It's a shame springer shooters have an over inflated ego about their 'skills'.....
I'm still waiting for one to prove themselves at our range.
Btw, I have shot springers for more than 25 years, and I'm as accurate as anyone I know, and I can shoot better with the FX DRS.

The DRS has that "centrefire rifle" look about it. Very good looking. The FAC version even more so as the bigger plenum chamber could be mistaken for a centrefire magazine.

I certainly can't shoot my springers as well as my PCPs. Some of the guys at my club can shoot them better than me but I would never consider a springer for an open "up to .22" competition where I could be shooting against PCPs or even rimfire.
During the final Covid Lockdown, I ran out of air, so the only garden shooting I could do was with a CO2 pistol. I have since added a Weihrauch HW45 pistol and an Air Arms TX200 to my gun cabinet. I can't shoot either as well as my PCP alternatives but springers are entertaining in their own way and definitely better than nothing if I am ever short of compressed air again.
I've had one on order since july and still waiting, they are so popular atm, I have concerns with the mag and the lightweight stock being strong enough to hold a bi-pod, there are rumors the hammer-spring adjuster moves on it's own and it's causing air leakage from the barrel though that may be down to people messing around with the settings and not applying lock tightener after.

They when tuning, it's beat to apply decent loctite to the adjustment screw threads to ensure there's no movement.... or get a lock off nut.

I don't have a DRS but I've had a TX200 for a couple of years.
The bad:
1. Rumour has it that the current (mark 3) version was designed as an 18ft-pounder for the US market and they just fitted a softer spring for the UK. It certainly has a longer stroke than earlier models. This gives it a long lock time in 12ft-pound. Springers have practically completed their recoil cycle before the pellet exits the muzzle, so all springers are hold-sensitive but the TX200 particularly so. You need to practice your hold consistency or you will be spraying pellets everywhere.
2. Its a heavy old thing so if hunting is your bag then you'll need to be fit and strong to carry one around all day (doesn't apply to me: I'm an OAP who only shoots at the range so only have to carry it from the car to the firing point).
3. The anti-beartrap mechanism is quirky and takes some getting used to. If you don't like it then pay the extra and buy the Pro Sport.
4. It has an auto-safety which is just a pain in the arse if you are just doing target shooting.
The good:
1. The TX is beautifully made and finished. I bought one in a walnut stock a few weeks before they announced the laminate version which I would have preferred.
2. If the lock time is as much of a problem as it was to me then I'd fit a TBT max tuning kit (no affiliation). This has a stiffer spring but shortens the stroke to keep it at 12ft-pounds. It includes spacers to fine tune the power. Mine is most accurate at 10.5ft-pounds. The reduction in lock time has reduced my groups to better than half what they were in standard trim. (Now sub fingernail size at 25 yards indoors.) The tuning kit is easy to fit and there are videos to show how.
3. The full-length (not the HC) version has a short moderator insert which reduces the muzzle crack enough to shoot in my garden unmodified. The extra length of cocking lever reduces cocking effort over the HC too.
If you are going for out-and-out accuracy then buy a PCP. If you want a different experience and the challenge of shooting a springer then choose the TX. Having shot firearms for years, this has similar recoil to a rimfire, which many like. I considered the Weihrauch alternative but having watched strip and assembly videos, chose the Air Arms. Its a good gun as standard but better when tuned. If I had to have just one rifle then this would not be it, I'd have a PCP. If you want to go the springer route then the TX200 is hard to beat, particularly when tuned. If you're in any doubt, try to borrow one to try. Springers are NOT everyone's cup of tea.

Tx200s are good for a springer, if you can pick up a used on for a couple of hundred quid..... AIr Arms are trying to r@pe people for nearly a grand for a 'good spec' one (better bit of wood) now!!!

Budget price for a reason, usual FX l, very accurate when they work, but regularly fail :- prone to leaks & over complicated design- form before function sadly.
@philipbooth9755 Most issues with fx rifles are either user error or because some of their guns are made for big powerand arent really suited for the strangling they get for the UK market.
I'd sooner buy from an innovative company like FX, which is constantly trying to improve and redesign, rather than an archaic and obstinate company like Air Arms, who will happily charge you £1500 for a 30year old gun, in a new stock, claiming its modern.
Most airgun companies have thier issues.
Just a cheap and nasty FX crap.
Boooooooo, sour grapes ay...... its beat the socks off the best guns Air Arms and BSA have to offer, and for half the price.... so that's bloody good in my book.

@@Airgunmarksmanofficial No where near the FX doesn't have the quality of bluing of the air Arms and BSA or the build quality and BSA have the best hammer forged barrel far superior to FX nothing but problems with FX Accuracy problems leaking valves and way over priced for pieces of plastic and nuts and bolts and guns that look like something from starwars movies proud to own air arms and BSA and they are made by British craftsman.
@nicholasrichards2402 I also run an airgun building and maintenance/ tuning company....... BSA and Air Arms are 1980s technology.
When they bother to use regulators, they are crap.
Thier valving is like something you would find in an old steam engine and their whole design is outdated.
They also can't make a decent magazine and BOTH British companies really need to make a modern airgun, I'm sick of getting them in for repair.
Old boys that like these kinds of antique replicas struggle with FXs as they don't know how to use and maintain modern and high tech machinery... its that simple.
Once our UKs current OAP airgunners are gone, AA and BSA will be forced to move with the times, or face closure.
@@Airgunmarksmanofficial Air arms have some of the best Hft on the market no question about the build quality and accuracy of their target guns some of us OAP as you call us are proud to own and use our classic BSA and air arms guns.
@@Airgunmarksmanofficial I'm sure you are correct. I'm an OAP, have been shooting over 50 years and own Air Arms and BSA rifles. Not sure why they appeal to the older generation but when I look around the club at who's shooting what, there aren't many youngsters shooting BSA or AA.
No interest whatsoever in loud Airguns and this one (in FAC) is very loud no matter what moderator you use.
