I love your videos for so many reasons. One, you're just a regular dude teaching others how to diy. Two, you show when you make mistakes, which I think is great for the learning process. Three, the fact that you put the narrative in the description is so inclusive to those with hearing problems/deafness. Four, I think it's sweet how much you obviously care for your girlfriend. 😊 You're the best, man.
Is there anything you can't do? I actually went to school for 3 years to learn jewellery making, and things got a bit more complicated there. I have two tips: when you solder silver, don't point the flame directly at the solder, but warm the entire piece first and move the flame around. Solder flows towards heat, and if the piece of solder is the hottest point, it won't flow properly. Also, you'll end up melting the piece. Another tip is to put the piece after soldering to a cup of warm citric acid solution to remove the dark fire scale left from fluxing and heating. You'll end up with a clean piece which is easier to polish, and won't ruin your files (flux is like glass after soldering). Don't put anything with steel (or iron) in the citric acid solution, or it will get ruined. Great video!
Cool tips! I hope I’m not being a bother by asking but can I ask what made you go to school for jewelry making and if you think it’s worth it? Just wondering, as I’ve been making jewelry for a while and never really considered actually going to school for it until just now haha.
@@tylerene Where I live (Finland), we have a long tradition of gold smith education, and the field is quite regulated. I happen to live close to a respected school. I started doing jewellery on my own, but I figured I could actually become a "real" jewellery smith and turn it into a small business, which I did. I think I've learnt more on my own than in school, but I guess it was worth the time to learn to do things "the right way"- and it didn't cost me anything. It's definately possible to learn making jewellery on your own or through shorter courses, but around here, people value degrees and titles, and they are impressed to hear I went to school for this - which often helps with selling stuff.

My two cents: You may want to use a piece of cloth between the block and use a leather covered hammer as you can transfer impurities onto your silver - when you solder, it'll include the impurities affecting the longevity and maintenance of the ring. More important for 925. Also easier soldering process in general. The leather can also help prevent unwanted marking and nicking on your metal.
Hey, if you dip your piece of solder in to the flux first, then place it on the ring, it should stay on the ring better. The solder will naturally ball up first, then as it gets to melting point, it will flow in to the seam. Another tip is to heat the ring evenly throughout, then focus on where you want to solder.
I really love your videos, you're so creative. I feel like you go a step further from the classic diy, we all see on our home pages. I'd love to receive one of your kits, if you end up making them. Thank you for your videos!
Man your videos are honestly the best. You have such unique project ideas and you put so much effort into doing them well and making sure your audience could do them too. I love it sooososo much
when you use solder it might be helpful (and faster) to make sure you sand the pieces you're soldering where the solder will go!!! it can be a pain, and soldering already is a pain, but making sure your metal is super clean is really helpful :)
Your solder did not flow the first time because there was firescale (the black stuff on your metal from heating it that you referred to as fire stain) on the metal, the flux probably would have worked if your metal was cleaner!! Using a toothbrush and some soap to clean the metal would help, ideally pickling the metal after applying heat. Also if you apply the solder while the flux is still wet it should essentially hold it in place before melting. AND applying flux to your entire piece will help lessen the firescale :)
@@Shmoxd I'm not sure what flux you originally used, but any flux should work (though I cannot peak on flux used on electronics, i would think that its just a lower grade but i dunno). would just stick with handy flux if you're just soldering jewelry as an occasional hobby. Its a go to for hobbyist jewelers because its cheap and decent. There are definitely different types of flux, like handy flux is a borax-based compound that provides substantial oxide protection but often leafs a tough glassy skin often referred to as "flux glass" but that's easily removed with pickling and/or filing and sanding.
You should have a go with sliver clay ! Feels and acts like clay then you blow touch it , which burns away a binder and leaves you with solid sliver :)
I admire your willingness to explore different mediums. Jewelry is fun to make and great to learn. I took jewelry for a few years and enjoyed it a lot. I won't lie, I cringed a little at the filing and soldering ^-^" (sorry) When you are filing, the file's teeth only go in one direction, only in the forward push, so filing sideways or backwards on the teeth only wears down the file faster. When you are soldering, you only need a tiny bit of solder (quarter of what you used), you can cut small pieces and preheat separately so they ball up and its easier to stick on your metal. Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and copper, when it is heated, the smaller copper molecules will start to separate and you can see that as fire scale. To check if you have fire scale, place the metal on a piece of white paper and anywhere there is a purple cloudiness that is fire scale that needs to be sanded off. Fire scale increases with prolonged heat and temperature, so if you can keep soldering short and sweet, you can avoid a lot of clean up. Thanks for sharing your process. It's nice seeing other artists learning and trying new things. You should really use a hide mallet to ‘hammer’ the silver to get the round shape. As using a metal hammer can add unwanted scratches and dents to the silver (similar to using pliers with teeth) Maybe adding a cloth or some fabric to your hammer might help avoid this if you don’t have a mallet? Just a thought! Love the video, haven’t seen anything like this on TH-cam!

make sure anywhere there is gonna be a solder connection sand it clean. solder flows on clean surfaces
Ring kits would be super cool!
A kit would be pretty sweet. I have a food torch already so 👍 yeah. Happy New Year!
You make it look easy. Good teacher.
I love the idea of a kit! I have a bunch of crystals that I'd love to turn into rings! Awesome video, always so interesting, keep them coming!
AAAH! you make everything look so simple&easy. real encouraging.
yall are so cute :)
The kits are a good idea cause I was very confused on the things you said you were using
i love absolutely everything about your channel and videos, the aesthetic is always amazing, your editing is super cool, i dont think ive seen anyone else make this type of content! keep up the good work dude, ive been a fan for a couple of years and you just keep getting better and better
This came out just in time! I was trying to think of a new project to do in sculpture lol
I think it's pretty damn cool how you're always trying and learning new skills. I wanna try this. I was actually researching silver smithing and jewelry making a week or two ago because I was interested in it, but all resources I found made it seem so intimidating. This was a great video, I might actually give jewelry making a shot now.
Making kits would be so cool!!!! Please do, it would make it so much more convenient!
The ring kit idea is super cool!
Like a little Shmoxd Lego set
Haha I will use LEGO as my inspiration
Hey Shmoxd, I think kits would be great, not just for the rings, even for the screen printing or stickers and stuff. I think you can market them really well.
Ooo i didn’t even think about screen printing kits.. I’ll have to look into that too:)
@@Shmoxd I personally would definitely be interested in buying a screen printing kit more than the rings cause its something I can reuse
u just called me single for 11 minutes. the rest is just that metal thing flying around
edit: im shook u didn't reach 10 million by now!! so underrated
I live for these vids and yesss the kits sound amazing I don’t want to by a whole bunch of random stuff for one ring
Making jewelry and creme brulee, a man of many talents
Your so talented. Million suscribers coming this year.
🤞🏻🤞🏻
you're like a chill silversmithing teacher which is nice because my teacher was legit scary
