Doom Ports on Consoles

- If you’ve followed this channel for a while, you’ll know that I have more than a passing fondness for the Doom games. In fact, I have a hard time deciding if Doom or Super Metroid take the top spot for my favourite game of all time.
This means that I have owned Doom on just about every console I’ve owned that it was available for. And that’s what we are looking at here, a bunch of Doom ports that came to our home consoles.
Keep in mind, I am only talking about official ports, well, apart from the last one, so there’ll be no pregnancy tests or McDonalds drive through screens. Just the ports that came out on consoles. As always though, be sure to shout at me in the comments for any others that I should try in the future.

‘The ambient sounds of Doom PS1 aren’t that bad’
*Me weeping in the corner…*
The background music/noise in the PS1 version absolutely make the game.
I love this version and still have a PS1 connected to a TV to this day with a copy of Doom in its drive.
I have the Switch version and it's a pretty nice way to play on the go. There's also Android sourceports that allow loading of mods, but then you have to endure touchscreen controls if you don't have a bluetooth controller...
You could just use your Switch controller, only challenge is either propping up your phone or physically attaching it lol.
To be fair, Doom is a great game for on the go. I'd get the Switch one if I had one. I do have it on my Steam Deck though :). Haven't dabbled in mods on there though, only on my computer.
My favourite verisons is Doom on PS1. Its soundtrack is as masterful as the game itself. Really gives it a dark foreboding atmosphere
SAME.
19:21 The change of medkits cross colour from red to green was done mostly because of a risk of getting a lawsuit from the Geneva Convention. As its illegal to use their Red Cross imagery by any unauthorized individuals, groups etc. The latest example that i remember of getting a law suit because of a red cross featured in game was in Stardew valley and Among us out of all games😭. So they did that mostly because of that.
Ah ok, that explains it. I figured it would be something along those lines. Thanks for the info :)
I was wondering if you were going to consider Quest a console. Very cool to see Team Beef’s work included. Great video!
Yeah, I love me some Team Beef. Currently playing through Doom 3 in VR and its so good! And the Quake games, too.
My first Doom experience was the 32x
well, it could be much worse...
Yeah thats not a bad one to start with to be fair!
SNES Doom impressed me, because while it is using a helper chip, its still Doom...on a 16-bit console, and it was basically coded by a single guy, who made his own game engine to run it.
It's like Skyrim, there is a version for every single device and his mother 😅😂
Thanks my dude 👍🏼
Skyrim can only wish it was Doom though :P
Question is... will there be a Skyrim mod for Doom first, or a Doom mod for Skyrim...
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 indeed 😁👍🏼
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 that is a good question 😅
I remember a while ago me and my friends were looking at DOOM ports that were on old systems from back then, we decided on the 3DO version because why not. (I'm saying this after seeing your review on the 3DO vertion btw) And despite my friend having a very strong PC, his PC started to make some loud sounds and we decided to get rid of that version from his PC
The unfortunate issue with emulating jaguar games is that the clock speed for some are really borked and not many emulators have the ability to lock the speed. Which is why it runs so fast here.
So about the chronology of the ports: the Jaguar version was actually the first console port developed but the second to be released (the 32X version came out slightly ahead of it) and was done by John Carmack, which probably explains why it turned out so well. The cuts made to the levels from the original 3 episodes were carried over into most subsequent ports, even the PS1 version where you'd think they would no longer be necessary. The SNES version didn't come out until much later (1995) and was largely developed by one guy, Randy Linden, who made a custom engine to get the game to run properly on the system.
Oh thats cool. Kinda surprising that Jag was first. Carmack's touch explains why it was a good one though!
Keep in mind many of these older ports looked a lot better on the CRT these consoles used at the time, the scanlines and phosphoros displays smoothed over the jaggies you are seeing here, and the GBA port looks great on it's 3 inch tft display, not so much blown up on YT
@@jamesjdh6787 yeah that’s a very good point. Even though I grew up with a few of these versions I still forget that when I play them now.
Doom and I came to the world in the same day same year, 30 years ago an we both are still amazing an ageing like the finest wine. Love all your content, especially doom there brother! Keep up the good work!
Does that make you the Doom Slayer?
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 RIP......and.....TEAR!
Look up Exhumed and the story of the Saturn port's original rejected 60fps version before blaming the hardware.
Good point. I actually have Exhumed, Duke Nukem and Quake for the Saturn. Haven't gotten round to trying them properly, though. Might do a Saturn FPS video at some point.
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 I look forward to it. Have you seen the new FPS homebrew engine?
Excellent video. Love seeing the console Doom ports getting attention
Glad you enjoyed it. I might explore some of the fan made ones at some point, like on Atari, C64 and NES.
I've noticed on many VR-footages of different reviewers that horizont is almost always slightly (or significantly) tilted. I also notice that when playing PSVR myself. That means problems with poise probably. Interesting. Perhaps we can use VR to correct our posture.
Great video anyway. Thank you for your work. Can never get enough of Doom videos.
Ha ha. That is very true! I just watched back a couple of my videos after reading this. I need to sort my spine out!
If you aren't playing Doom with a friend using a link cable on PS on two 14" CRT TVs then it's not Doom... But also this is some very enjoyable content!
Another misinformed TH-camr saying the Sega Saturn was not "good" at 3D. The Doom engine is NOT 3D; it's a raycasting engine. It relies on the system's processor for rendering quickly, not the GPU. The original game was made to run on 486 PCs, which lacked any 3D accelaration capabilities. The reason why the Saturn port is worse than the PlayStation one, is because it was not optimized for Saturn hardware. The devs in charge of the port wanted to make it run on the same engine as Duke Nukem 3D on the Saturn, but John Carmack shot the idea down, as he disliked texture warping (common on both PS1 and Saturn as neither has Z buffering). Had the devs made use of the Saturn's 2nd SH2 processor, DOOm would have run much better. Alas, it was a wasted opportunity.
@@vembrace that’s very cool to know. Aa you noticed I wasn’t aware. Thanks for the info 👍
I had the SNES version and I loved it although flawed. The 32X is impressive.
GZDoom Quest 2 supports VR.
VR in HDOOM!
OH BOY!
Now I hear from a very reliable source that may or may not be myself, that HDoom works very well in VR.
SNES port of doom had a custom engine made for it. that's why it transitioned so well. Doom 32X and the Atari Jaguar port entered production around the same time. The 32X version was actually rushed to meet the launch of the 32X. the 32X port has a very steady framerate as you can see. That is the Sega Mega Drives "blast processing". Though Blast Processing is a marketing term for the mega drive's refresh rate which was designed to allow 60hz with almost no slow down (in PAL region it is 50Hz) though. 32X doom as with most 3D rendered games halves the framerate. it's about 30HZ instead. Jaguar port can play music but only if you have two jaguars linked via Jag link. Saturn version suffered from John Carmack being an asshole and making the developer recode the game multiple times because he wanted it to be like the Jaguar version or whatever. basically, he was just being his egotistical self. HE did finally apologize for ruining the saturn version. Also, the special spectres are still in the Saturn version, but they look the same as normal ones. The green blood in the GBA port had nothing to do with Nintendo. It was actually so they could get the game a T for Teen/ PEGI - 12+ rating. The Xbox 360 version even ports over all the original game bugs, even crashes! And yes, the health kit changes are indeed because of copyright. Red Cross is a copyrighted symbol of the Red Cross. This isn't the first time the cross has been censored either. in the 360/PS3 port of Doom 2, they are replaced with red and white pill pictures. (this also affects the Doom 3 BFG Edition versions) Also, the 360 version of Doom 2 also includes a new episode: "No Rest for the Living"
Great video! It's nice to see all these Doom ports compared to each other in this video. I'm surprised the GBA version has all the levels and runs better than the 3DO version given the limited hardware. Keep it up.
No online play for the Ps4 , Xbox one and Switch Port. 360 did.
You missed the OG Xbox port. It was great
"3 frames an hour" lmao that sounds about right
I was two when Doom released, so I didn't play it til later. The 360 version is the first way I played it. Still have it, it's a really good version. I tried getting those multiplayer achievements. I remember getting a match started, and I was doing well but the guy left lol. Then I got into another match (so not hosting this time) and I realized why. The input delay when playing offhost is HORRIBLE. Anyway, I've since played via Chocolate Doom, GZDoom, dsda-doom, and the official version on the Switch. Also yeah, the new version has green cross medkits because the Red Cross complained.
360 version is very good, but yeah those achievements are annoying. Does the Switch one have the add ons? Those are what I'm playing through at the moment. Some are really damn hard!
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 Yeah, the addons are there. I'd rather player 'em on PC though. Mouse supremacy! I haven't played many mappacks yet, I really should.
Great video but was wondering why you haven't covered Doom 64. Also as someone on here already mentioned the collectors edition on the OG XBOX.
Doom 64 isn't a port though, its a totally new game, so that wouldn't count here. There are a few other ports, like the Xbox and Switch. But I don't own them, so wouldn't be able to show them. Would have done if I had them.
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 I still would love to have seen Doom 64 in included though despite differences. I think it would fit. Maybe a separate video now though.
@@Kenno10rapid yeah. I’ll be doing a video with the whole series in at some point, so it’ll definitely be in there 👌
@@thereviewsbrothers3854 Definitely I will be wanting to check it out. Nice one!!! Looking forward to it!!!
I will forever be disappointed that the modern console version of Doom doesn't have built in online multiplayer like the 360 version did- ESPECIALLY because the recent Quake port did have online play.
Had the 32X version as a young kid. Yeah it wasnt bad at all. Then my dad bought a Playstation for his place and a copy of Doom, played the heck out of it whenever I was at his place. And it was quite superior to the 32X vers.
McDoomalds isn't official?
It is in my head! Order myself a McDoom burger.
My fav has always been Final Doom. It was the 1st game I owned on PS1 & still have it today
Never have I ever heard anyone say Xbox three hundred and sixty 😂😂
Doom on Saturn could've been good 🤔
Developer made a version with their own engine that ran alot better but carmack didn't want them to use it because it introduced texture warping
"Jagwah"
The Sega Saturn version suffered because John Carmack did not allow the developer to use the 3D materials for the game, opting to avoid texture wobble rather than have a smooth game. I am astounded at how many people know the terrible development for the worst port of the game, but so many do not even LOOK up the Saturn port's problematic development. AVGN did the same exact thing.
No mention of the Switch Port?!
I actually don’t have a switch or know anyone that has it on switch (my friends are losers). As far as I know it’s the same as the PS4 version though. Not 100% if it has the add on features.
It's the same as the PS4 version, yeah.
I bought Doom eternal for ps5 and got my ass handed to me. That game looks amazing but is way too hard.
Oh I definitely recommend sticking with it. Drop the difficulty a bit, then when you're used to the combat loop, you will be ripping and tearing like nobodies business. I went back to it recently (this video was actually going to be on all the games in the series til I realised how many console ports there were) and when I went back to my previous save, I struggled to beat the first and second levels. Really is one of those games you have to re-learn.
Don’t forget Doom 1 & 2 we’re on the original Xbox on the Collector edition of Doom 3
Three frames an hour 😂
Are you the top hat gaming man
I am happy to report that I am not. My voice is much sexier.
@thereviewsbrothers3854 hehe love the video
The SNES version was pretty ambitious as it made use of the SNES 3dfx chip
Why don’t they remake this game? Because it’s near perfect. These games are way better suited for reboots like Doom 2016 instead of remaking the original. In fact, they kind of did with Doom 3 and took it in a whole different direction.
You say at the PS4/Xbox One/Switch version that nothing is altered. But why would you want that in a port of the original Doom?
Gotta say I was kind of disappointed with the lack of research done for this video.
The reason why the medkits have different sprites is 100% because of copyright. The Red Cross owns the red cross.
“I’m not sure which came before, Doom PS1 or Doom 64”. A simple Google search would have answered that question. (PS1 Doom is the answer)
Also Doom for SNES is not the first console port. It came out in 95 wheras the 32x and Jaguar ports released in 94.
Doom is one of the best documented games on the internet. So basic knowledge about all these versions and why they run good or bad is out there. It’s just a shame you didn’t go through the trouble of doing that to make a great video.
Second comment and under 33 views baby!
About 3 seconds of Google would have told you the change to green crosses what at the request of the red cross....
Modders are the exact reason theres no remake of doom 1, everyone knows its jusy not needed.
The PS1 version of Doom is GOATED. The new soundtrack improves the game in my opinion and the ambient lighting is a nice touch too.
As an exercise in translating the PC game to an early generation console, the SNES version is under rated. As an aggregate, it keeps an impressive number of the PC versions levels, including several that didn't appear in any of those other console ports, it features all the bigger boss enemies missing from several of the other ports, it maintains the three-episode structure of the PC original, and as a whole the level geometry stays true to the PC version in ways many that the other consoles compromised it. Out of those generations of consoles, if fidelity to the PC Doom was what I were looking for, then the Super Nintendo port was the best of them.
Green blood aside, Gameboy Advance Doom 2 was also a very faithful adaptation of the PC game, and deserves kudos for it.
I played the GBA version of Doom 2 religiously. Only one thing that truly bothered me was the infamous armor glitch.
You forgot android and iOS
That Bill Gates Doom video was always such a weird stretch, especially him wearing that long jacket to try and look hip and edgy and down with the kids. Very much the 1990s equivalent of "Hello, fellow kids!", or maybe "hello fellow Doomers!" in this case.
The Doom novel named a character after him. It was the first zombie encountered in Knee Deep In The Dead lol
Hit me up if you wanna make some videos. I'm doing good things for the film and gaming industry
The Jag got far and away the best console version of that early 3d era
GBA is best option for a handheld unless you happen to have a switch of course or alternitively a handheld or phone capable of dreamcast emulation in wich case there is the fan made doom collection with great versions of doom, doom 2, final doom and wolf 3d all in one download
You didn't talk about the Xbox original version.
