- During the compilation of our 30 year memories Dave Bongo unearthed a dusty VHS tape and discovered something very special… unseen footage of the Masters At Work at their NYC studio in the 90s!
In 1996 we had the privilege of commissioning remixes for Amtosfear’s anthemic ‘Dancin’ In Outer Space’. We called upon the legendary MAW and Dave was lucky enough to drop in on some of the sessions at Dungeon Tape (Brooklyn), and the Battery Studios NYC. He captured some of the studio vibes during the making of what would become a classic in its own right.
I was 8 years old in 1996 when I first heard of Masters At Work. My mother owned a night club in Manila called 'Saxophone' which only played Jazz music (Anywhere from Bebop to Tribe to Deep House) and I would be there 3 nights a week (no sitter). You have no idea how much this will mean to her when I show this to her. Thank you for unearthing and sharing this gem!! You guys are one of the reasons I became who I am. Salute.
Diamond in the rough! Masters definitely at work. Love the bongo fills towards the end of the video! Great album that I copped in '97 upon its release. Shouts to my mellow KD (Kenny Dope) and the homie Louie Vega. Lou was the man at "Hearthrob" and the "Devils Nest" back in the day. Word!
It's a shame you don't see in studio recordings back in the day like this. Love this CLASSIC stuff!
For the gearheads: JBL 4425 Monitors, Akai S950, Akai S1000, Akai CD3000i, 1x Tascam DR88 + 2 Tascam DR38 Recorders + RC848 remote, Emu SP 1200, Mutron Bi-phase, Roland SH-101, Juno 106, Ensoniq ASR-10, Ensoniq ZR-76, Ensoniq DP/2, Ensoniq DP/4, a Power Macintosh running Opcode Studio Vision i presume plus a very talented engineer by the name of David Darlington.
what mixing desk?
You legend thank you
@@danizm78 The smaller one looks like a Mackie VLZ series - which were super popular with a lot of electronic music producers - especially drum n' bass - because you could overdrive the inputs on them and make things sound super warm. They were also cheap. Probably more because they were cheap. Haha.
There is an Emu SP1200 sampler, too, aside for the turntable. Thanks for the review!

Those 3 stacked/chained Tascam DA-88's... 🔥
So raw, so talented, so patient. The recipe for masterpieces
Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Dave Darlington, Gene Perez... 100% Legends

Man, check all those Akai samplers in the rack! 🥰
I'm amazed they have such a pokey studio & produced such incredible work.
Hi, guys. I was the skinny white guy in the front row, last on your right, grinning and laughing all the way through the talk you guys gave at Jubilee Library in Brighton in celebration of 30 years of Mr Bongo. All the way through, I kept thinking of questions I wanted to ask, hoping you would leave a few minutes for them at the end of the talk, but you gave so many references to awesome stuff I could find just researching on line and crate-digging in the shop that there was no need for questions. When you mentioned finding this tape, I knew I had to see it. MAW! on VHS!.. The 90's!...
Oh to be a fly on the studio wall of MAW sessions... So much talent moving around that space

im watching too!!!! this is truly AMAZING
Louie’s the real deal
A generational musical genius
Who is that at the computer?
HOUSE MASTERS
Gene Perez the man behind the sound
I always said I seen Kenny program a drum machine but never saw Louie actually play keys as he said. Now I see he played a lil something!! That's what's up 👍
I interviewed him for an essay a few months back... he plays almost all the initial ideas in but will bring in axel tosca when he wants some more complex voicings or chops
@@benbrooker Axle and Josh I see. I guess that's why he brought Josh to the Grammys with him. Josh does a lot playing and writing for him also. A lot
I have the record they are recording, its double album sampler called ATMOSPHERE or dancing in outerspace
They are doing a cover version of britfunk band Atfmosfear - Dancin In Outer Space (1979)
Is that Luis Quintero on the congas ?
Yes it is.
Does somebody know who is the percussionist?
Luisito Quintero I think

Track ID for the first song they are playing.... But maybe we need a full tracklist !?!?
I guess they're working on a cover of Atmosfear's "Dancing In Outer Space"
