    Loved this tutorial. I'm just starting out with X-Plane and flight swimming and hopefully getting my private pilot license but I'm documenting my journey on my channel and I'm self-teaching. I do have a CFI that will sign me off locally for ground school if I prove to him I'm knowledgeable for everything I need to be and he'll also be my flight instructor for when I get in the plane. So that's cool. The "Discontinuity" help me up in my last video, naturally, a crash stopped me in the first one, so I'm off to a good start. LOL. Thanks for the video and now I should be able to finish my first flight. After a whole week and two failed attempts.

    Yes finally I found and was shown how to do this manually, and in a speed of a DC3 not Concord speed demonstration. It was also good that after you had typed in your flight path and you begun to check it out that you had some issues that had to be fixed, so you showed us how to fix these errors. But you still had not quite figured out or proceed the final leg where all at a sudden you were back to 5.000 feet for some strange reasons. So you stared to wondering why that was so and you went through all the pages from 1 to 5 , but the pages they were 6 of them, so why didn't you go to that 6th page to see if you couldn't see or find out what was causing that problem, maybe you could have seen it there and deleted on of the point as you did with the first error what you had to deal with? But in general this was very nicely done, and thank you Flight Brother

      That is what I'd like to do. Honestly I did fly and film the trip immediately after the data entry you saw on the video, but I had issues during descent. I will experiment a bit more to see if I screwed up or if the FMC wasn't operating in a normal predictable way. If you just want to get going though- take-off, above 1500' click LNAV, VNAV, and CMD. Make sure the flight directors and autothrottle switches are on.

    Definitely one of the best tutorials I have seen on the FMS/FMC for sure. I just picked up a KingAir 350 from Airfoillabs and it has a FMS. I imported a FP from LittleNavigraph last night and it came in just fine. But it did not set the ADF for the first NBD waypoint. I would think it should do that? I had to manually program it and the the plane would not go to it which I am sure is on my end, but it just got stuck on the first waypoint and would not advance and I saw now way to advance it to the next waypoint in the plan which was a VOR. So I am a bit confused on how the plan goes from the FMS to actually being used by the aircraft. I am going to build a plan manually tonight and see if that makes a diff since I did not validate the steps with the MDF which might have clued me in. I have watched a lot of FMS videos and not one described my question so I must be missing something very obvious. Anyway, I have some breadcrumbs to follow tonight. Cheers !!

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect the issue is what input the autopilot is receiving. I'll see if I can check where that is for you, but basically there should be a switch or knob to go from nav/fms. The FMC does not time radios, as it will find them without them being tuned.

    • @Alan_Edwards
      @Alan_Edwards 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlightBrothersFT Yeah that is sort of what i figured, but could not find anything. And the docs that came with the plane are not very good. Plane is great...documentation not so much. I really like to know what each knob does and how and when to use it, so some decent docs would be nice. One last thing...is there a way to manually advance to the next waypoint in the FMS like you can do in a Garmin? Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. At least now I can narrow my search.

    • @Alan_Edwards
      @Alan_Edwards 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Took me a while after an exhaustive search to find a manual to match the FMS in the King Air, that the version of the FMS in XPlane is a customized one and used in all XPlane aircraft that have a FMS device. So the documentation was readily available from Laminar. So there are about four hours of my life I won't get back. But hey, my company just let me go and gave me a real nice severance so it looks like I am retired now and have oodles of time to spend learning all this stuff. Between this video and the King Air manuals (real one) I downloaded, it's coming together. Thanks again for the reply. I will let you know the final answer, although I am quite sure it's just something stupid on my part. AE

    Very nice and nice timing. I have been using XP11 for a little less than a year, and started watching your vids and learned a great deal when I got in to the hobby. Most of that in the Zibo. I have gotten an itch to fly the 747. So I get it started and realize I forgot how this FMC worked. Also I had no idea how to do the freq for ILS and course. So thank you for mentioning this. I would also be interested in seeing the resulting flight. MY flight plan I did before seeing this had the same issue with no runway in the plan. I am going to try again soon. Thank you again!

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting. I did film the flight, but had issues getting it to descend on the FMC. It might have been user error, it might be the vnav has issues on descent. Either way you didn't miss much worth seeing. Ended up going manual for the arrival and approach.

      @@FlightBrothersFT Well I did my flight. I had to manually enter the final legs. But there were not missed approach legs. AP worked great through climb, cruise & decent. But upon final approach the plane started away from the airport. I could not disengage the cmd or change speed. I had to disconnect AP and fly manually.

    Pretty good job guys. I haven't read all the comments so I apologize if I am repeating what others have said. Yes Id love to see a video on how to implement the FMC into an actual flight. I will be doing some reading SimBrief and the FMC manual Please contact me via e mail or how can I e mail you? I don't use my g mail account. I used 2 computers one to watch and take notes the other was to open x plane 11, the 747 400 and log what you said into the FMC. There were discrepancies in the route/waypoint numbering both written and verbally. I really enjoyed the "mistake" in the route and you show to remove/edit those items that need to be removed. All in all pretty good job.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trying to match our flight plan exactly will depend on which AIRAC cycle of nav data your Xplane has. We have Navigraph chart subscriptions, so our videos tend to reflect whatever was current at the time of recording. Regardless, you can generate your own flight plan in simbrief and enter that. Our airline flight planning tutorial will walk you through those steps. flightbrosft@gmail.com

    Your videos are great. One big problem I am having is because I want to, at this stage of my flying use the default x plane atc which requires you to fill out the default flight plan. I find that the X plane default plan conflicts with the Simbrief one that I load into the FMC. Especially in the area auto pilot and navigation. For example, I will file and load my Simbrief plan. The when in the cockpit I will file a second plan using X Plane's default ATC flight planner. I even re-copy the routing legs from the Simbrief plan in the FMC into the X plane default flight planner. After takeoff at about 1000 feet I press the LNAV, VNAV and CMD buttons as indicated in your 747 400 tutorial video. At first there are no issues but when I try to make course changes as per the X Plane AI ATC controller my plane starts going crazy out of control. Even sometimes doing barrel rolls. What am I doing wrong?

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our short response is, we’ve not experienced this. The caveat to that is that we’ve never used XPlane ATC and understand (based on forum surfing) that it’s not “ideal”. If the ATC vectors you, you would need to be in HDG mode not LNAV at that point. A suggestion would be try flying without ATC. See if the results repeat.
      I’m guessing you’re really using ATC to tell you when to descend. And a 3:1-ish rule helps here. 30k feet, start descending about 90 miles out. 10k, 30 miles etc. The only issue with this method is if you are in mountainous terrain/IMC. This is where having your charts handy, if you use them, will help. Your minimum safe altitudes are listed on there.
      Sorry for the longer response, but since we don’t know your level of experience, feel free to disregard what you already know, or ask a further question to clarify any additional knowledge gaps. We will do our best to help!

      @@FlightBrothersFT actually that response was a great help. I found a way last night that helped a bit. I guess when you recopy the Simbrief route into the X-Plane atc plan you can't use sids and stars. I also found when switching the LNAV on and off as needed helps. But yeah you are right I am using the ATC to vector me in to to the runway at the correct decent rate. Which is sometimes is useless as the X-Plane atc brought me into the side of a mountain last night while on a flight from CYYC to CYVR. Lol I was at 7000 feet and didn't see it until it was too late. I guess in the future I could turn on the landing lights a little early to help light up the area. But anyway thank you so much you've been a great help!

    First let me say, I love your videos. Very in-depth, a good speed and well produced. I am a computer idiot, and have never flown a real plane. I am however an aviation enthusiast who LOVES flying in the sim. For years, I’ve just been flying the Boeing planes using the default ATC along with the auto pilot altitude hold, vertical speed hold, heading hold, and throttle hold. I decided I really wanted to try the FMS, and despite your video being really on point, I find myself dealing with situations that are not covered in this video and confusing to figure out. This is particularly true of the arrival and departure settings, as well as the vertical NAV set up. Would you be willing to do a video that not only programs the FMC, but then flies it as well? Lastly, if there is any chance you’d be willing to allow me to email you with the specifics of what I’m dealing with, that would be amazing. I live in the middle of nowhere and don’t have friends who sim so I’m “flying in the dark” (lame pun I know). Regardless, keep the tutorials coming! Good stuff guys.

    The default Laminar FMS is very quirky and seems to do random stuff everytime I put in a flight plan. One thing you definitely need to be careful of is making changes to existing flight plans. FMS somehow doesnot respond well to any changes once it has calculated your VNAV and LNAV. You pretty much have to exit XPlane and start fresh from a blank Flight plan. If you want to use FMC for Auto pilot than I would suggest moving to Zibo Mod 737. I don't know why Laminar doesn't fix or improve on the current shoddy FMS integration with Auto Pilot.

Many people are happy to share their criticism, but we also appreciate what is immediately available within the sim. The default segment doesn’t get a lot of love, and was a niche we wanted to explore. Excellent question. You have reached the greatest limitation of the default FMC. Being made to work with almost any aircraft, it lacks the aircraft specific performance data to do those calculations. You can work around this by using the charts manually or just estimating. Your biggest risks will be on short runways, high altitudes, high gross weights, and hot temperatures. If you have any of those conditions, you should check the performance tables first. Many are available with a quick Google search.

If your airport does not have one, then you can simply install the first waypoint along your route of travel, for example a VOR or 5 letter waypoint along your airway, or direct route of travel. This is likely due to the AIRAC cycles being different. If you have a subscription service, Navigraph for example, it will keep the nav data in the sim current. The chart cycle is also in Simbrief, so if they both match, you shouldn’t get errors. This is the likely cause.

      @@FlightBrothersFT Hi. I've entered all the flight data inc SIDS etc but the FMC wont seem to give altitude data for each waypoint as I think it's meant to but I do enter the cruise altitude. However when I try getting the aircaraft to follow the FMC route I entered the plane (The default 737 and MD-80) will just ignore the set speeds and altitude in the FMC and will just keep climbing and speeding up unless I manually hit autothrottle or altitude hold. Also I noticed it says the AIRAC Cycle is out of date on my Simbrief flight plan so I'm not sure if that could be the issuse or how to change that. Can you please advise? Sorry for the questions but I'm quite keen to get this right so I can start to enjoy flying rather than scratching my head.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots to unpack there. 1. AIRAC cycle nav data- your sim brief cycle needs to match your Xplane cycle, or some waypoints won't exist. Nav cycle would not cause the issue you described. 2. Cruise altitude. Assuming you get your plan entered first, then enter a cruise altitude on the crz page, the FMC will then automatically fill the cruise altitude on the legs page. SID and STAR waypoints will have there own preset altitudes that come from the charts and nav data cycle. Once that is entered, the autopilot mode is the next part of getting the aircraft to get there and stay. Typically on climb you would activate (737) NAV, VNAV, auto-throttle, and then press CMD. These modes will then show in the top of the PFD above the artificial horizon. On the MD80, you will activate FMS (does what Boeing NAV does), VNAV, auto-throttle, and then toggtle the autopilot switch up (basically like CMD on the Boeing).
      Both the Boeing and MD will climb and hold cruise altitude with the above procedures. Descent is another story, and we have a Zibo video demonstrating that on the 737.
      Good luck!

    If anybody knows how to calculate the V speeds manually using a calculator (my math is bad).
    Also the performance page found on the 737 cannot be found which lets me enter the CRZ ALT,Cruise Temp,fuel, cost index,etc. Seriously i am bothered that i could enter some of information into the FMC of the 737,but not on the 747.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. We share your frustration, but can explain the reason. The Zibo FMC is a custom programmed replica of the real Boeing FMC. The default Laminar 747 uses a generic Xplane FMC that roughly follows Boeing logic but lacks the model specific performance calculations (this same FMC is in the default MD80, and numerous payware as well). I would suggest checking out the SSG 747-8i if you are interested in having a 747 with a highly realistic FMC (like the Zibo has). We both have the aircraft and find it to work well, and it has ongoing updates which are improving the product (soon a freighter will be released in an upcoming update, and we've had the privilege of flying the beta version).

      Sure. I’m not 100% certain but if you’re able to put the airport identifier in, it would theoretically fly to it as a waypoint.

      Kristoffer Thorsheim other Flight Bro (Lee) here, not sure on the 747. The FlyJSim Q400 Legacy requires an FMC pop out button to be configured. Possibly try this, but I also do not have an issue with the 744. We’d be interested in any feedback you could give us and the viewers.

      @@FlightBrothersFT Hi Lee -- of course, I'd happy to provide with info. I guess, I need to go on the "org" for support, but its weird that a blank FMC (both popup & screened) are not working on both aftermarket 744 and the same issue resides in a vanilla default 744 as well; where as, again the default 737 is not producing the same error...? I have updated my fms nav data via navigraph to see if it was this, its a nuisance... on to the org forums I guess it is yet again.

      @@FlightBrothersFT & Lee; I can reproduce the error now (it seems)... seems like the default FMC/FMS is mapped with the joystick of "Avionics On/Off" ... meaning that if you're using the Honeycomb Alpha, turning Avionics on by default mapping switch of Avionics switch on, turns on the wxr (weather on PFD) AAAANND YOUR FMC/FMS's!! So there was the error, it was nothing bugged or that... a few nights rest on going through where fault may lie, it was the avionics button, if its mapped it needs to be on to get weather (terrain works without) and the FMS/FMCs!... at least it turns them on, so it should work then; which it does!... this is for the 744 both modified and default....

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The key is being patient with them. Each has different info they like, and in certain orders (default, Zibo/Boeing/Airbus). We find the default is more similar to Boeing logic (Zibo and Flight Factor for example) than Airbus. We’ve made a short cut cheat sheet for Airbus from our friend Ronnie. His Airbus “FMC” video is available over on FSElite YT channel if you have a ‘bus. Also by clicking the input line on the bottom of the screen you can use DKE (direct keyboard entry) to type the data in.
      Also of note, if you find some of the waypoints won’t work, it could be an AIRAC issue. We use Navigraph for keeping our data/waypoints/SIDs/STARs up to date. There are other methods, but this is our preferred due to ease of use and continuous addition of features. We are not sponsored by then in anyway, but sometimes use their charts, through permission, with some of our videos.

    This is too complicated for me; in other flight simulators I merely filed point A to point B, climbed, then turned on Nav. and the aircraft automatically turned to my destination; that's it.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is still possible to do a simple point to point with this FMC. You may find you need at least 1 waypoint between. Regarding the level of complication though, you can thank real world procedures for that. This is how all IFR flight plans look for GA or commerical aircraft.

    Thanks for your tutorial. I am recently struggling with braking the aircraft while taxiing. Basically the problem is that after i have applied the toe brake to stop the aircraft, because I need to make a turn or stop short of holding point, the aircraft won't move again after I throttle again. It is stalled for some reason. Have I done some wrong or is it because of some other reasons?

      Interesting. It sounds like the parking brake is engaging. You could check your controller settings (if you're using pedals with toe brakes) to be sure they are set correctly. The keyboard command to engage or release the parking brake is 'b'

      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the default FMS and many developers use it if they do not want to produce a custom FMS. It would be up to the producer of your GIV. We would recommend reviewing any included documentation included with it, or searching the XPlane.org forums for information on that specific aircraft.

      Sure, we got you! Download a flight plan from simbrief in the default .fms format. Put it in the folder xplane11/Output/FMS plans. Once in the sim click ROUTE MENU (right soft key 1) then CO ROUTE LIST (left soft key 2). Scroll as needed using next page and click the soft key beside the plan you select.

      Couple tips. Under the VIEW menu is an aviation flashlight, very helpful. Next, the 744 has panel backlighting knobs for all the text around buttons and dials, look at the bottom left of the overhead panel for most of these knobs. The Captain and first officer positions have separate knobs for their panel displays to the top corner if their panel ( between window and panel). If you want a dome light click the STORM switch on the bottom left of the overhead.
